THE NEW SEASON!

Yes, it's very nearly upon us, and we're delighted to say that the Ear has somehow managed to survive for another year. This season will be our 39th, and we're planning to diversify into other formats to make sure the Ear remains relevant into a fifth decade.

But fans of the 'zine need not fear - we'll be publishing at least 5 new editions this season, and subscriptions are open from today!

Sadly, prices have had to go up a bit, as the last few years of inflation mean we've been running at a loss for a while now. So, for the princely sum of £25 (which is still less than almost every single adult matchday ticket for our home games) you can have every edition delivered directly to the address of your choice... or it's a straight tenner if you're happy with a pdf version.

Joe Elwood: 26/10/39 - 14/7/24, pictured here outside Brisbane Road just a couple of years ago. One of a very few Os to have won promotion to, played in and scored in the top flight, Joe spent 8 seasons with Orient and settled in Walthamstow after his playing days were over.

69 years ago today, our founder Dave Knight was born.

As most of you know, Dave is no longer with us. But his legacy lives on through his family, his very many friends, and the countless ways that he improved the lives of those who knew him while he was around.

Keeping this fanzine going is one small way that we can honour his memory, and we try our best to do so in the same spirit he started it with back in 1986.

Happy Birthday Dave: everything we do is built on, and inspired by your work. That was your gift to us, and because we can't pay it back directly to you, we're trying to pay it forward.

We were proud to sponsor Leyton Orient’s Women’s team at this years “Star Man” (perhaps that name needs a rethink) dinner and dance this year. They more than made up for Richie Wellens’ no-show, and glowed like only a team that had won 5-1 a couple of hours earlier can.

Attention: Well the 2023/4 season is just about done However, the Orientear has been there from the off to bring you the stories that mattered over the past nine months as we have done since the far away days of 1986. Without blowing our own trumpets we think its a decent body of work, so with that in mind it's worth reminding you that digital copies of these masterworks are still available for the giveaway sum of £1.00 sterling. Hard copies are becoming hard to find though, with only #288 residing in the ear vaults (although we can knock you up quality printed copies of other numbers if required) and maybe a few editions of the latest offering #293 to be found in Dreamhouse records in Francis Road E.10 if you are lucky. The situation at Vitesse Arnhem has become existential. We all remember how it felt when we were contemplating the brink in 2017 under an owner who had stopped funding us, and was holding a gun to the Club’s head while demanding to be paid out.

There maybe the odd copy to be found behind the bar in the supporters club and a brisk walk to Dreamhouse records in Francis road could well pay off in the quest for some heavy reading material for the journey home. Anyone who's been reading the 'Ear recently will know how important we think this is. And how proud we are that one of our players is also taking a leading role in shaming the game into taking action...

Apparently, some Orient fans thought his work with the PFA was a terrible distraction, and was the reason for his poor form at the beginning of the season - like he'd be a better player if he spent his time playing snooker or something. Well here he is, a key figure in our most impressive run of form for many seasons, also fighting the good fight for his fellow professionals (and supporters too).

Players do not think the football authorities are doing enough to effectively tackle racism in the game, says PFA chair Omar Beckles.
