Approximately 1 in 4 people in the UK have a mental health problem with 1 in 6 experiencing issues such as anxiety or depression. 75% of these illnesses start before a child reaches 18 years old, yet so many still aren’t getting help or talking about what they are feeling.
Terrifyingly su***de is the biggest killer of young people in the UK.
Over 40% of young people report being bullied within the last 12 months, 6% of children report being bullied every day at school. 21% of those being bullied have skipped school due to being the victim of bullying.
Sadly it doesn’t stop in childhood, a third of adults living within the UK have continued to face bullies in their adult life.
The taboo of talking about how we feel is still there. There are some amazing organisations making great steps forward to help break this and encourage us all to be more open and honest about what we’re feeling, experiencing or the help that we need – but there’s still a long way to go.
In addition, over 60% of people in the UK are classed as being overweight or obese – this in itself can have a huge impact on how we feel, especially for women and older children.
Anything we can do within our communities to raise the profile of the support available, the tools, tips and treatments available and how these can help you to make a difference to your own life and your future happiness is essential.
Our aim is to bring together experts from across the local area, through different forms of media to support anyone who may be experiencing any of these issues. They will give insights, interviews, write posts and give talks on the support, tools, activities and treatments available – making it easier for us all to get the help and advice we need.
Let’s break the taboo and work together within our community to make a difference and help everyone feel a little bit more amazing every day.
