Living in a neurodiverse family is….Interesting 🤓

I’m revamping this wall in the dining room and explained to my Norm & Harley that it’s NOT FINISHED. Ie: I’ve got more to add, yes I know it doesn’t look even…yet!!

But still they both started ribbing me about why it doesn’t look right, how it’s not even etc etc etc 😅

All in good fun but it can be hard when logical minds (Norm & Harley) hit up against my creative mind 😂

I can see where I’m putting things and how they’ll fit, I want it to be like a collage… Ava is like me and sees it how I envision it….

Today was a great example of how our brains work differently but beautifully in their own ways!✌🏻

Also if you’re a BTS Army you may spot the photos 📸 they are simply place holders while I wait for my new prints to come. BUT if the lads keep teasing me I just might leave them up! 😋🙊🤣

I know some Autistics don’t really like the word ‘acceptance’ and I’m definitely on the fence 🤔

It’s much better than Awareness because lots of people are ‘aware’ of autism but is ‘acceptance’ the right word?

I promise you that with the right encouragement our Autistic kids & adults will try what they want WHEN they’re comfortable.

H Tried mashed potatoes again the other night, I simply offered, as I do with everything.
He said yes, I didn’t make a big deal. I gave him a teaspoon sized bit.

He didn’t like it.

Again I didn’t make a big deal all I said was ‘ I’m chuffed you gave it another go’💪🏻 end of discussion.

On the other side he’s discovered new burgers he likes because of my easy approach.
I STILL didn’t make a big deal. He knows im happy to buy him what makes him happy.

He KNOWS it’s hard to find things he enjoys/copes with, he doesn’t need bloody reminding!

I bet there’s something as an adult you dislike eating and because you’re grown can make that decision for yourself.

Kids are too often held to standards waaaay higher than we’d give ourselves.

In my house, if my kid is eating, that’s a win 🏆
They’ll try new things in their own time.
Let them have autonomy 💪🏻

Whilst my son was undiagnosed I was very *lucky* to not get any fines. It didn’t stop the teacher from threatening MY SON that ’mummy will go to jail if you don’t go to school’!! Yes, they said that! That’s why I’ve signed and am sharing this petition.

Children and parents going through hard times DO NOT need fines!

This is definitely an ongoing process for me.
Every time I find my feet something comes along to wobble me.

That something could be someone saying something, but most of the time
ITS ME!
I’m the problem, it’s me 🎵🤣

And what I mean by that is, it’s the ingrained fear and societal expectations of what an ‘Education’ should look like 👀

I bump up against this at the moment a lot.
Am I doing the right thing?
Can I really prepare my kids for the ‘real world’ in an appropriate way?

And the answer is actually, usually YES 🙌🏻

I’m not being sarcastic, or big headed.

Childhood is such a short time and I WILL absolutely turn everything into a teaching moment as appropriate.

When I think back to my schooling…what do I actually remember 🤔
What did I learn to pass an exam, that I’ve since never used again 🧐
How did I learn the best?

The answers-
I remember Art and Drama because they were my favourites. English too because I love reading.

Algebra is often cited as something we learnt and never used and for ME that’s true. Most the maths tbh because I was made to feel idiotic by some teachers and they ruined my potential. Life skills have taught me maths more than they ever did.

How did I learn best? Well that was at a psychiatric hospital, I was given lessons with usually 3 other kids. So the answer is small and focused amounts of work.

I passed 9 GCSE’s (B&C’s) with severe mental illness because ‘I’ was invested in and taught in an appropriate way for ME.

I continue to remind myself this when my legs get wobbly.

So yes, I’m still standing up for what I believe in- Home Education- even on the wibbly wobbly days 🙌🏻

Hello 👋🏻 struck again and I forgot to post this yesterday 🤓
Anyway… we made Felix’s Brownies 🥄
My daughter (and me) love us some so for a spot of home economics this was our afternoon lesson.

Honestly THE best brownies I’ve ever tasted!!

Felix’s original recipe contained coffee/espresso but you’re not about to catch me giving caffeine to my 11yr old 😆she already bounces off the walls🤣

I’ve popped the recipe we used, I tweaked it a bit for our allergies etc and STILL they were divine 😋

Day 3 of cleaning/decluttering for my new desk and ‘Creativity Corner’🤓

Everything is now made and furniture is in correct order 👍🏻

Today I started going through all the Art stuff we (read me and Ava) own 🤣

I’ve got sooo many unfinished projects, differing hobbies I’ve tried…
*Resin
*Jewellery Making
*Polymer Clay
*Gouache
*Wood Blanks
*Half finished canvases

And so much more because the other day I bought a macrame starter kit 😆

I’ve achieved quite a lot today after managing to reel myself back in and concentrate on donating stuff and chucking out rubbish 🗑️

I’m proud of what I’ve accomplished, considering it’s not just I’m battling, it’s also and in my knees 💪🏻

I’ll get it finished tomorrow hopefully and show you a before and after!

Learning:

There’s so many ways this prompt can be used.
My AuDHD brain wants to explain in depth how, what & why for each answer I have…
but I’ll be ‘good’ 🤓and pick one for now…

Learning to trust my instincts*

*Especially when it comes to my children.

I have been gaslit, accused and berated for daring to suggest that the school was failing my child.
I believed them.
Until one day, when my son was 10.

He came home again after being bullied and despite me speaking with the school to sort things between us- they still believed he was the instigator.

I knew he was not.

From that day forward I LEARNT HOW TO ADVOCATE FOR MY CHILDREN.
It was scary. But I had to help my son.

I learnt to be ‘THAT MUM’

It might have some negative connotations, however:

’That mum’ knows her child/children best

’That mum’ believes all children should be listened to

’That mum’ will not stand by and let bullies win (that includes adult bullies-I’ve met plenty of them)

’That mum’ is literally begging for help & not receiving it

’That mum’ is sick of upholding her end of the bargain & the school/LA/professionals *not* upholding theirs!

Learning, as I said,
means many things.

but for me, this was the most important thing I learnt personally over the past few years.

Don’t be afraid to speak up for yourself & your children.
I believe you.

This week we made a new timetable for A’s home education, she’s been feeling overwhelmed with it lately and I suggested she design her own week!

It includes:
*A few things that must happen(within reason)
*Reading 📖 because not only is it important it’s something she loves
*Special Interests -see Korean Culture
*Easy and quick learning with flash cards
*plus things she’d like to do if we can fit it in

It’s gone well this week and she’s achieved a lot and felt in control of her own time which I think is a huge win 🏆

Children and teen's become traumatized adults, I know first hand, we are living the after effects and it's years later....not just for me.

An idea on how trauma works:
Our son began ‘school refusing’ *
in 2013.
We know now that it was the beginning of Autistic Burnout.

It’s 2023, he’s 18 and still hates schools, Professionals, Doctors etc , because of the fight, not only he had, but the fight he saw I had!
We are still repairing the damage of the government’s desire to reduce kids to tick boxes instead of being treated as individuals.

As the years have passed I’ve also realised that I too am Autistic and likely ADHD, as well as already having a diagnosis of OCD.
I don’t particularly like ’labels’.

However they can serve a purpose when it comes to NT’s understanding and accepting that we need help and are indeed disabled.

One of my special interests & coping, calming mechanisms has always been Art.
I’ve had a successful Art business for over 7 years now, but now that I’m home educating my daughter, I’ve decided it’s time to integrate my Art with my voice.
That’s why I’m here.

I’m using my voice & my story
to help others feel not so alone.
Whilst using my Art and own ND brain to help you plan, create & live a life that makes you happy.
