As part of our summer sale, we asked our staff for their favorite books. JOVIS Verlag acquisitions editor Felix Torkar highly recommends "Hey Computer! Icons of Architecture, Rebuilt by AI." In an artistic experiment, designer Floyd Erol Schulze fed descriptions of famous buildings into AI, which generated its own, oftentimes whimsical and far-out versions. Have a peek inside to see if you can recognize the original landmarks they're based on.

Floyd went all out in pushing the artistic boundaries of generative AI in this unusual book. A perfect present for the design and architecture lover in your life, or anyone who needs reassurance that AI isn't quite up to the job of replacing us yet: https://www.degruyter.com/document/doi/10.1515/9783986120498/html

As AI continues to impact scholarly publishing, our editorial department recently convened a workshop looking at its implications for our authors and our work. Serena Pirrotta and Bettina de Keijzer presented a survey of views and usage amongst the academic community, the latest industry responses, and how we can develop our own best practices.

This was followed by input from AI experts Gerhard Schreiber (co-editor of De Gruyter's volume "KI: Text") and Anna Strasser (philosopher and author of "Kognition künstlicher Systeme"), as well as contributions from academics representing a wide range of international institutions.

We look forward to integrating everyone's advice and feedback into our strategy as we move forward and do our part to ensure this new technology serves our authors and benefits the wider community. Thanks to everyone for contributing!

🌏 Busy, busy is what the past month has been! Our teams have been all over.

Sales colleagues Linda Empringham, Eva Wantzen and Denis Godbout visited beautiful Oslo for the International Association of Law Libraries conference. Our arts and architecture team, including Katja Richter, Kevin Schneider, Pablo Schneider and Anja Weisenseel, descended on Lyon for the CIHA art history congress, which featured book presentations with our authors Henri de Riedmatten, Friederike Schäfer, Ursula Ströbele, Noémie Etienne and Philippe Cordez.

So many authors dropped by our booths at the International Medieval Congress in Leeds! Pictured are Jacob Abell, Conor Whately, Marie D'Aguanno Ito, Salvatore Liccardo and Steven Vanderputten. The Celtic Conference in Classics saw our acquisitions editors Mirjam Elbers and Carlo Vessella join forces in Cardiff and welcome editors Rafal Toczko, David Woods and Michael Hanagan to their adjoining booths. Stay tuned as conference season continues!

Happy Nelson Mandela Day! Today, we celebrate the life and legacy of this champion of justice, equality and peace. His journey from prisoner to president is a source of inspiration, as is his courage, compassion and power to unify.

Watch below as editor Crain Soudien explains the significance of Brill's volume "Nelson Mandela: Comparative Perspectives of His Significance for Education." Reflecting on the South African leader's life, the book illustrates the relevance of his values in teaching the generations of tomorrow. Mandela challenges us to think deeply about the kinds of lives we aspire to create for ourselves and everyone around us.

🎉 Following hot on the heels of our author fest last week was yesterday's staff party! Featuring the De Gruyter choir's rendition of "Here Comes the Sun," more barbecue than you could shake a marshmallow stick at, artisanal ice cream, signature drinks by our head designer Ralf, tunes by our archivist Flo, and the loveliest guests you possibly could ask for, it was a fantastic occasion for Brill and De Gruyter staff to meet, mix and mingle.

Thanks to everyone who came from far and wide, and to everyone who helped put it together!

We're excited to announce that De Gruyter is expanding its DG2O Subscribe to Open program by making an additional 37 journals available in open access by 2025.

These include renowned titles such as "Historische Zeitschrift" (founded in 1859), "Archiv für Geschichte der Philosophie" (est. 1888), "Analyse und Kritik" (est. 1979), "feministische studien" (est. 1982), "Zeitschrift für Kristallographie - Crystalline Materials" (est. 1877) and "Biological Chemistry" (est. 1878).

Last year, De Gruyter was the first major academic publisher to announce Subscribe to Open as the central transformation model of its open access strategy. The inclusion of these additional titles will take our DG2O portfolio to almost 60 journals next year.

“As editors of the Historische Zeitschrift, we are very pleased about this step towards accessibility,” say Prof. Julia Hillner and Prof. Andreas Fahrmeir, who emphasized that they find it particularly important that the journal continues to not charge publication fees and thus remains accessible to all authors.

🥳 We were delighted to welcome so many authors, friends and Brill colleagues to our editorial summer party yesterday to celebrate 300 years of Kant! After a warm welcome by Carsten Buhr, Manuela Gerlof and Maurits van den Boogert, guests were able to chat with our editors, browse beautiful book displays, and join a guided tour of our building.

Philosopher Lea Ypi from The London School of Economics and Political Science - LSE gave a keynote lecture titled "Kant on Revolution," followed by a Q&A with FAZ.NET - Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung and DIE ZEIT journalist Katharina Teutsch. A new Kant museum in Lüneburg was the subject of curator Tim Kunze's presentation, and Kant-themed merch was raffled off, too.

Throw in a fantastic buffet, gelato and drinks, plus some sugary pop tunes, and we had all the ingredients for a perfect summer day!

Big thanks to everyone who came, and to all the organizers!

🌎 It's been a whirlwind last few weeks at De Gruyter Brill. Here are just a few highlights!

Our Boston team sent these snapshots from a recent afternoon at Fenway Park - go Red Sox! Meanwhile, our editors were spotted at conferences around the globe, including Vincent Oeters at the International Congress of Classical Archaeology in Paris, Loes Schouten at the North American Patristics Society gathering in Chicago, Abdurraouf Oueslati and Ekrem Dursun at the World Congress of Bioethics in Doha, and marketing maven Nicole Schwarz at an architecture symposium in Graz, Austria.

Finally, Brill author Angela Hug received plaudits from the Classical Association of Canada for her recent book on the politics of reproduction in Rome, while author Abhinav Sinha sent this selfie from India with his recently published survey of the working class movement in Delhi. 🎧 Today our podcast WAGNIS WISSEN looks at another dark chapter of German history. Philosopher and historian Matthias Häussler (Ruhr-Universität Bochum) dissects the first genocide of the 20th century—Germany's brutal colonial extermination campaign against the Ova-Herero, Nama and Oorlam people of Namibia that claimed tens of thousands of victims 120 years ago.

19/06/2024

Marking the end of slavery in the United States, Juneteenth offers a chance to reflect on the racial disparities that continue to haunt academia. Last year, librarians Ana Ndumu (University of Maryland), Shauntee Burns-Simpson (NYPL The New York Public Library) and Marlena Okechukwu (Hennepin County Law Library, Minneapolis) wrote a blog post for us about the history of Black librarianship and the Supreme Court's ban on affirmative action.

In light of current debates around academic freedom, book bans and the role of DEI initiatives on campuses, their piece is more relevant than ever for anyone in higher education who wants to ensure a more equitable future: https://blog.degruyter.com/how-the-ban-on-affirmative-action-affects-black-librarianship

You can read Ana's original study on diversity and equality in LIS practice here, in our journal Libri: https://www.degruyter.com/document/doi/10.1515/libri-2019-0187/html

The US Supreme Court’s decision to end affirmative action marks a significant setback on the path towards social justice. Moreover, it reflects over a century of bias against Black librarians. To ensure equitable opportunities it is crucial to recognize this legacy of institutional harm.

🌿 For today's Sustainable Gastronomy Day, Brill has curated a collection of fascinating food-centric titles. From the history of tea to Philippine culinary culture and food sharing in Mongolia, there's much to discover. Titles on edible insects (such as the Journal of Insects as Food and Feed), the globalization of fishing and EU food law provide insights into how we might develop more sustainable ways of preparing and producing food.

Calling all serious foodies! Britain's premiere literary event, the Hay Festival, recently hosted a cooking event revolving around Brill's historical cookbook, "Best of Delectable Foods and Dishes from al-Andalus and al-Maghrib." Written by the 13th century Andalusian scholar Ibn Razin Al-Tujibi, it contains 475 recipes from Moorish Spain and is now available for the first time in English, translated by food expert Nawal Nasrallah.

At the event, Honey & Co. chefs Sarit Packer and Itamar Srulovich talked to Polly Russell, food historian and curator at the British Library, about this remarkable book, baked flatbread from one of its recipes, and handed out delicious treats. The ring cookies stuffed with almonds and sugar and the spiced fried chickpeas were a hit with the audience. We wish we'd been there!

The book is available here in paperback: https://brill.com/display/title/60748

If you can't wait to try out some of the recipes yourself, we've collected two of them here: https://www2.brill.com/ihc186-sample

🎧 Our next podcast season is all about the politics of memory. What is the relationship between individual and collective memories? How are traumatic memories passed down across generations? How is our understanding of the past shaped, and who shapes these narratives?

In our first episode, Magdalena Saryusz-Wolska (director of the DHI Warschau - NIH Warszawa) reflects on one of the worst N**i atrocities in World War II—the "Holocaust by bullets," or mass shootings of the Jewish population during the German occupation of the Soviet Union.

On the UN's World Environment Day, we're spotlighting Brill's Journal for European Environment & Planning Law. Now in its 20th year, it publishes research and debate around environmental policies. As governments seek to limit the adverse effects of climate change, legal frameworks are key in ensuring countries across Europe tackle these challenges together.

The board of editors is emblematic of the journal's cross-border and multidisciplinary approach. Under the helm of Lorenzo Squintani from the University of Groningen, the editors hail from universities and research institutes from a dozen European countries.

This is just one small step we're taking to help protect our planet, by spreading the knowledge experts need to improve policies. Check out the journal here: https://brill.com/view/journals/jeep/jeep-overview.xml?contents=editorialcontent-84250

🏳️‍🌈 Happy Pride Month! This year, celebrations coincide with the continental football action of Euro 2024. The last time this happened, in 2020, Bodie Ashton made a sharp contribution to De Gruyter Conversations on the appropriation of LGBTQIA+ pride in corporate football. Read it here:

Donning a rainbow flag in the face of international anti-q***r measures is not enough. To be taken seriously as an LGBTQIA+ rights advocate, Germany needs to reckon with its own complex and difficult past first.
