ENORMOUS gratitudes to our director Jem Garrard who is hands down one of the finest directors around. Jem was instrumental in developing the visual language of the Synthesis: Season Zero proof of concept trailer, innovating highly creative ways to make use of our LED volume to create the illusion of being in space and on distant planets. Seven years ago, we set out to answer one question: How can we build a better world if we don't all agree what that world looks like??
To answer that question, we needed a vehicle to propose grand thought experiments around designing a hypothetical but realistic and attainable future.
So we began developing the idea of an OPTIMISTIC sci-fi series called Synthesis. Set 250 years into the future, Synthesis is about six renegades who steal a spaceship and must unite a divided interstellar humanity before a smooth-talking corporate overlord destroys all hope of achieving utopia.
We started by thinking about all of the things we'd like to suck less about the world today and then we started thinking about the types of heroes that would need to step up and do the work, united only by one singular goal: to build a better future, no matter the cost!
If you're a Canadian sci-fi fan, you already know that homegrown science fiction shows set in space are extremely rare because of the cost to produce them, so we knew we would have to innovate massively if we wished to show audiences what creating better worlds in the future looks like.
With the support of Showmax Events, Emily Carr University of Art + Design, ARC VFX, William F. White International Inc. the Canadian Media Producers Association - CMPA and Andy Brown/Marco Bossow's Transmute Pictures and because of our funding partners, the Canada Media Fund and Telefilm Canada we set out to establish a brand new workflow that was both indie film friendly AND creatively boundless!
Today, we are proud and SO overjoyed to share - a proof of concept for a new optimistic sci fi show AND the proof of concept for the future of independent filmmaking!

We are looking for someone(s) to help us with Equity, Diversity and Inclusion in Film and TV.
Trembling Void is building an Equity, Diversity and Inclusion strategy as part of our general approach to staffing film sets - and the government has tentatively offered to pay for some of the costs if an organization or individual will give us a quote ASAP. This could be "a college or university, a professional ED&I consultant, or a not-for-profit focusing on education/training."
Advice? We are looking to find someone quickly.
-----
Here's the context:
Film and TV is project-to-project, and has to hire a lot of people in very little time. This means that staffing is usually network-driven, and networking is *terrible* at EDI. This is part of why film is often so last-century when it comes to diversity and inclusion.
We want to change that. But in the past we've been challenged by conventional ED&I approaches that don't work for film (because of the high volume of hiring that we have to do in a short time, on a short project, where people are used to their established teams).
There are film-specific resources, but having tried 8-ish crewing diversity databases, none have met our needs in vetting crew skills, and each of which fragments the talent pool (which then leads to people not updating every profile on 3-6 separate sites, making most out of date), and a lot work well at one axis and totally screw up another (some databases won't show Gender Diverse people in searches).
Unions are hit and miss in terms of tracking people internally. We are interested in doing outreach to parents, PWD, and others who would like to work shorter days, but don't know where to turn to find people. We would like to create equity-based training positions, especially where there's not a lot of outreach, but want to make sure that we're leaving people with useful skills. and don't throw them in over their heads, etc
I think we need a general ED&I strategist, be it a person or a team.
Ideas? Names? Organizations?

We fully support BIPOC Credits With Andy Wong and the work Andy is doing. Trembling Void Producers, Amy Fox, and Ingo Lou were recently featured on the podcast and loved their time with Andy. Here is their latest episode, featuring voice actor Brian Doe-Chua check it out on Spotify https://spoti.fi/3Bu1FEN
"Voice actor Brian Doe-Chua has voiced various shows from My Little Pony, to Bakugan and more! He goes into his journey of why voice acting suits him best and shares his perspective on being a bi-racial actor. Due to being in demand, Brian talks about rest and the whole "hustle culture" of the film industry. Finally, Brian pulls the curtain back on the changes in the voice-over landscape in terms of casting and characters. Program notes: The BIPOC Credits Podcast is currently a self-funded passion project with the goal of creating a platform for BIPOC crew members to talk about their own experiences and dreams."

15 Lessons for Film Distribution from the First Wave
A great presentation worth watching by Veria.ca funded by @Telefilm Canada and you can find out more here https://veria.ca/thanks-covid-15-lessons-for-film-distribution-from-the-first-wave
"This research was funded by Telefilm Canada and undertaken by digital strategist Annelise Larson . It is a summary of lessons gleaned from a review of over 50 feature films from around the world that had to pivot from a planned theatrical to a digital release of some sort between March and September 2020 because of COVID-19. This major pandemic swept the world and left much devastation in its wake. However, it also created new and unexpected opportunities for some who were nimble enough to take advantage of this extraordinary time and provided many lessons for the film industry in Canada and abroad."
You can now catch The Switch - Work, Love, Mortal Danger. on The Green Channel
This fun comedy looks at many social issues like the housing crisis, environmental issues, and life in the LGBTQ communities. Totally worth watching.

What is Trembling Void Studios?
Real guns vs replicas in film
Here are 3 Reasons to work with a licensed armourer!
SOUND ON! Composer Sean William leads last month's IndieLab
Trembling Void Studios is a Vancouver based production company specialized in innovative film and television entertainment. It innovates in both content and method, using training and proactive strategy to facilitate content creation that supports perspectives from intersecting axes of diversity in the cast, crew, keys, and creatives.
Trembling Void has produced music videos, instructionals, PSAs, over 50 shorts, and has now completed its fourth feature film, Indian Road Trip, an Indigenous buddy comedy set to air on the Aboriginal Peoples’ Television Network in December 2020, and has been nominated for several Leo Awards: Best TV Movie (Trembling Void Studios and Road Trip Films), Best Director (Allan Hopkins), Best Screenplay (Allan Hopkins), Best Sound (Eli Haligua & Hennie Britton), Best Musical Score (Jason Burnstick), Best Casting (Hayley Gray, Allan Hopkins), Best Supporting Male Performance (Dr. Evan Adams).
In 2019, we opened “Trembling Void_ Space,” Canada’s first indie co-working studio, a space for indie filmmakers to develop content, collaborate and cooperate. It’s home to 8 production companies, and provides filmmakers with the gear and skills they need to shoot a film, all under one roof.
If you have ever thought about film making, have a project sitting on the back burner, NOW is the time. Create the future at Trembling Void - be part of the unheard voices. Questions about tax credits, creator development, where to start? We are here to help. Opportunity is knocking - create with local content creators - collaborate together
We are champions of socially relevant content that prioritizes stories from intersecting marginalized groups and we provide training and mentoring opportunities for those who wish to do so.
We tell stories to create a sense of understanding. The stories that we tell each other impact the stories we tell ourselves about ourselves. If the stories we hear tell us that the only stories that are interesting are those that are mainstream and do not represent our own voice, some part of your soul takes home the message that your stories, and your understanding of the world are not that important. Even though you may know that is wrong, it’s still there. So we want to create and support media that addresses that. And thanks to the amazing teams we get to work with and the brave content creators we get to support, we hope that audiences will begin to see that their own world-view is not only valid, but also offers rich opportunities for storytelling that you won’t see anywhere else.
We are not selling a product - we are selling an idea; that content does not have to be something that someone sells you, you get to have a say in what is created. You can do this either by creating or supporting = this is the Trembling Void philosophy.
