On 21st September 2024, the Kallyanpur Canals Project Inception Meeting and World Cleanup Day were held at the Kallyanpur DNCC Pump House. The event featured a seminar and cleaning campaign to raise awareness about plastic waste and environmental cleanliness.
“Kallyanpur Canals Project” is supported by the PLEASE Project, which is implemented by the South Asia Co-operative Environment Programme, supported by the World Bank, and with implementation support from UNOPS.
The event was chaired by Mr Alok Kumar Majudmer, Director, Red Orange and welcomed all to the event. Md. Mahmudul Hasan, NDC, Administrator, DNCC was present as Chief Guest and urged all to cooperate with the ‘Kallyanpur Canals Project’ and keep the canal clean. Mir Khairul Alam, CEO of DNCC, and Neeltje Kielen, Delegated Representative Water, Embassy of the Netherlands were present as Special Guests and reaffirmed their support and cooperation. Mr. Cypriaan Hendrikse Director of CDR International and Oceanbound provided an update of the project. Brigedier General Moin Uddin, Chief Engineer, DNCC and Captain Mohammad Fida Hasan, Chief Waste Management Officer, DNCC highlight the importance of cleanliness and waste management. And PLEASE Country Team Technical Expert Mr. Hasan Ahmed emphasises on the importance of proper plastic waste management.
The main objectives of the event were organising the Kallyanpur Canals project inception meeting with the main stakeholders and activating the waste collectors’ groups, and observing World CleanUp Day 2024. The main outcome of the event was onboarding all the most relevant stakeholders, such as DNCC, sorting centre owners, waste collectors, local leaders and people from the project implementation area. The event brought together more than 140 participants, including 38 women engaged in waste collection, sorting, and cleaning work.
