LOCAL NEWS: The state government has put stronger sanctions in place for disruptive activities that block the passage of trains, endangering the safety of rail workers and disrupting passengers.

Legislation passed by the NSW Parliament last night put in place a maximum fine of $22,000 for the offence of obstructing a railway.

Previously, the offence provision under the Crimes Act 1900 did not specify a fine.

With an anti-coal protest by thousands of people underway on Newcastle's foreshore, Newcastle Lord Mayor Ross Kerridge this week warned activists against expanding their water-borne protest to blocking train lines.

The state government says while recent rail line protest activity has centred on the Hunter region, this change will apply to every railway line in the state.

The provision also covers blocking the passage of light rail vehicles.

LOCAL NEWS: Thousands of anti-coal activists and their supporters have converged on Newcastle's Foreshore Park ahead of three days of action.

Despite a Supreme Court refusal to approve action and an exclusion zone on water-based protests from 5pm today, organisers have continued with training and safety lessons for people to take canoes out onto the harbour from Horseshoe Beach.

Police have said no unauthorised vessels or people are permitted to enter the exclusion zone and to do so may be an offence.

Activists have travelled from all over Australia to join the protest.

1000 Christmas Smiles. Joel is going to play 1000 holes of mini golf along with Mark from Rippit Golf. This will be a 24 hour marathon to help the families in Newcastle who may be doing it a bit tough this Christmas. Everyone who donates a Christmas Gift will receive a FREE round of Mini Golf.
