😮‍💨 One small country town with a LOT of things to see, but that has to be expected for a town that if you were to fold Australia in half, you would be folding Kimba in half. It is a surreal feeling standing ‘halfway across Australia’ and considering how big this island really is.

👀 We recommend mixing it up when heading back to Adelaide and going via Kimba so you not only avoid the same scenery but you experience Kimba and the pile of things to see. It makes for a great stop enroute to Port Augusta and the like. It gets hot here so be mindful if you are traveling in the peak of summer; it could be a bit warm out 🥵

🦜 The Big Galah stands at 8 metres high in front of the Halfway Across Australia Gem Shop on the Eyre Highway. In 2021, the Big Galah underwent a full renovation. The Gem shop offers local gemstones, carved emu eggs, souvenirs, opal, Cowell Jade, as well as food and beverages. Source: Kimba District Council

🧭 Edward John Eyre, born in England in 1815, is remembered as the first man to cross this continent from Sydney to the Swan River. He was the first man to record his exploration of the three sides of the peninsula named in his honour. Lake Eyre and the Eyre Highway are also named in recognition of his skill, perseverance and courage as an explorer. Erected in November 2011, these stunning figures are an artistic tribute to Edward John Eyre and the indigenous men on whose bush skills he so often relied. Source: Kimba District Council

🚩 Port Lincoln Hotel
📍 Lincoln Highway, Port Lincoln

🏨 We do not normally get involved in suggesting accommodation because everyone’s needs vary so much, but we can say the Port Lincoln Hotel has you covered; the accommodation is fresh and roomy, there are three restaurants onsite plus room service, it’s location is perfect for getting around whether on foot or wheels, the pool has potentially the best view from a pool in Australia, and the view from the ocean view rooms is so picturesque you will question leaving your room.

📍 Coffin Bay National Park

🗺️ Part of Port Lincoln

🌊 Sorry, but after Lincoln National Park I am out of worthy superlatives to post about Coffin Bay National Park - When you think you have seen natural beauty (not the kind my wife sees when she wakes up and looks at me every morning 🤣), South Australia just steps it up again. Coffin Bay is stunning, put your phone in your centre console and take it all in stunning, not enough hours in the day and not enough days in the trip stunning, and to say we saw 'some' of this place is probably an understatement. We drove around and took in as much as we could in the short amount of time we had but now understand why people spend a week or more here! It is just that beautiful, and we did not get near the oyster farms, boat tours, or any other tourist options.

ℹ️ We best give you something more to work with, so what did we do? We drove into Coffin Bay and checked out the sign - think Welcome to Las Vegas but less lights, and took in the Coffin Bay lookout just up from the welcome sign, this gives you a sneak peak into what you will experience. From there we drove straight into the NP and simply drove every sealed road we could find, stopping at every sign that represented a look out. Doing this we saw everything from still water lakes to experiencing the sheer brute force of the open ocean as it crashed into the rocky cliffs.

♻️ I am just going to say: next time you are planning a trip, do not look at driving down Sir Don to the airport, head west, check out both national parks and make sure you give yourself plenty of time - I would say a week is the minimum.

🦜 If there was ever a question about the girls having a bird phobia, it was squashed when visiting Glen Forest Wildlife Park. The bird life here is amazing, not to mention the non-bird life too... there is soooo many different animal! From your expected ducks, chickens, koalas, bunnies, and the like, through to water buffalo, big long horned cow things, camels, and a paparazzi hating emu (scroll quickly through the emu shots and you will soon piece it together).

🐽 What we thought would be a swift 'animal park' visit turned into much more and we barely scratched the surface of Glen Forest; still to be done is the maze, segway tours, mini golf, and then there is the vineyard. Glen Forest is without a doubt a FULL DAY adventure for the whole family.

🐨 Glen-Forest Tourist Park is set in very picturesque surroundings just 15 minutes drive from Port Lincoln, South Australia. With many attractions to suit all ages it is the ideal location for family picnics, birthday parties, social clubs, school excursions and bus tours. Glen-Forest Tourist Park is a 400 acres farm, with 120 acres dedicated to the animal park. 80 acres of vineyard also exists on the property, varieties grown are: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Shiraz, Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay. ❤️ Does it get any better? Stunning views, crystal clear warm water, wildlife, and kids saying “best day ever”. This is even after some complaints about walking up to the look out but the legs came good once we drove onto the beach and jumped out of the car and into the warm waters whilst mum and I took in the breath taking views.

🌅 Everywhere you look is postcard views, from rolling hills of trees to crystal clear water where you can see the shallows. There are not enough superlatives to describe Lincoln National Park nor does the character count on social media provide enough opportunity to describe the place. Just get there, spend the day, go back for another if time allows, you will not be disappointed. And take your walking shoes, there are so many places around the national park you can only see by stretching your legs.

🛏 If you have a caravan, then you are laughing, there are camping grounds all over the place and realistically, you could spend days here exploring, swimming, and walking.

⏳ Before you head back to Port Lincoln, and want to use every last ounce of the little ones energy, head to Mary Ellis Wreck Beach and let them loose on the massive sand dunes.

🚩 Port Neill Lookout & Pink Piano
📍 Port Neill & Lipson

🗺️ Part of Port Lincoln

🏖️ As South Australians we know we have some of the most idyllic beaches and coastlines in the world. Regardless of what the eastern seaboard says, I would sooner have our stunning beaches small waves/non-surfing beaches and all. I digress, pick a coastline in South Australia and you will not be disappointed, the drive into Port Lincoln is no different: Port Neill is breath taking, I would claim this view as our answer to Wineglass Bay in Tasmania.

🎹 True to form, we find random things and a pink piano on the side of the road into Port Lincoln fits the bill perfectly. Look, we are not saying your trip would be a waste if you do not stop and take a photo, but it is one of those landmarks that you can mark off the list. My guess is it sits somewhere between The Eiffel Tower and the Big Lobster in Kingston SE... potentially on the back of the page and seen through, but my motto is 'do what makes for a better story' so stop and check it out 😁.

📘 Brodie Crescent Playground
📍 Brodie Crescent, Christies Beach

🤷🏻 Why do all playground reviews need to be about the big ones, with massive slides, nosebleed provoking climbing structures, and room for 7,000 kids and it’s own post code and air traffic control?

🌳 We can confirm this was not a destination playground, but simply spotted it and two kids versus two adults generally ends up with the kids winning so a swift U-turn and we were having a great old time on a little playground with views into the parkland and out to the ocean. Sometimes less is more.

💡 Granted we have done copious amounts of these playgrounds without a thought of posting them, we have made the executive decision (reads: kids told us to) post any playground we stop at, regardless of whether it is the size of St Kilda or Brodie Crescent, we cannot discount the fact that there could be families who want a cute playground to be involved and play with their kids, and not every playground needs to span 100 acres.

🚩 Arno Bay Mangrove Boardwalk
📍 Arno Bay

🗺️ Part of Port Lincoln

🩴 Ever come across a 'quick stop' that ends up being a long stop? This is certainly one of them. Brilliantly built boardwalks take you toward the ocean, or inland through the mangroves. The latter includes crab spotting. Both directions are different worlds and we strongly encourage you to do both directions!

📑 The Boardwalk is designed to showcase the diverse and pristine beauty of the Arno Bay Estuary and winds through dense mangroves, mudflats and samphire with grass habitats over small tributaries alongside the main estuary waterway. It offers a safe swimming area, recreational fishing, wheelchair access, picnic and BBQ facilities and public toilets. Winner of the 'Outstanding Environmental Tourism Project' Award Tourism Eyre Peninsula 2005. Winner 'SA Great Award' 2005. SA Community Achievement Award 'Environment and Sustainability 2010' and recipient of may other awards. (Source - District Council of Cleve)

🚩 Hummock Hill Lookout & New Whyalla Jetty
📍 Whyalla

🗺️ Part of Port Lincoln

🔭 Overlooking the eastern end of Whyalla, Hummock Hill was developed by BHP as a gift to the city to commemorate BHPs centenary year and was handed over to the City Council during the 1986 South Australian Jubilee 150 Royal visit (Source: SouthAustralia.com.au).

👀 The views from Hummock Hill are stunning, you can start to understand how Whyalla is known as Steel City because the steel works are enormous! Then you move around to the new jetty which is picture perfect; so much so, Whyalla city council have installed a picture frame which will frame the jetty perfectly.

🐬 We walked the jetty, but photos cannot do it justice. Nor car just visiting during the day, so after conversing with the local pelican trying to get fish from the locals, and the pod of dolphins, we have decided we will return to Whyalla in the not too distant future (you have a lot of time to plan the next trip when road tripping), and will photograph it in its light up mode and showcase more of what Whyalla has to offer.

📍 Port Germein

🗺️ Part of Port Lincoln

⚓️ Another 'must do' stop on the way is Port Germein Jetty; The jetty was constructed in 1881 and in 1883 it was extended another 400 feet to measure 5,459 feet or 1,680 metres. Sadly, weather and time has shortened the jetty (cannot tell you how short because the girls saw the playground so that was the sole focus), regardless of its shortened stature, the area is stunning with crystal clear waters, sculptures, iron work, and a lot of items dating back to the 1800's.

🛝 Directly across the road is a great playground which will cater for all age groups, and if you are carrying bikes, it has a pseudo pump track/bmx track setup to burn a bit more energy.

🚩 The Big Blade
📍 Snowtown

🗺️ Part of Port Lincoln

💨 Those massive wind turbines are nothing new to South Australians. They are up and down the Fleurieu Peninsula, Mid-North, and across the Yorke and Eyre Peninsulas. From a distance and up close they are very impressive bit you can never get close enough to see the sheer size of the blades - until you drive to the small town of Snowtown. Granted known for other reasons, Snowtown is a great leg stretching and toilet stop on your way north/across to the E.P. and to see a genuine blade from a wind farm is pretty cool too!

🚩 Kayaking with Easy Kayaks
📍 Port Noarlunga/Onkaparinga River

🛶 Some days are just too nice to want to bring out the camera, this was one of those days. The weather was magic, the wind and current was friendly, and most of all: the kids were keen to paddle!

🦢 The Onkaparinga River is beautiful at the best of times but when you are out there, in the middle of it, the views are simply stunning, the bird life is brilliant, and it seems to be just yourselves and the occasional fisherman on the river bank.

🍔 After burning some calories on the water, we cannot recommend Port Burger any higher! These are some big time burgers, they serve local beers, and the vibe is sensational.

🚩 The Bend Motorsport Park
📍 Tailem Bend

⛽ As a family, we are petrol heads, so any time there is an array of fast cars making noise around The Bend, we are not far behind. We most commonly attend race meets encompassing GT cars and Porsches but The Bend hosts all sorts of motorsport events ranging from road cars through to prototypes. And that is just on the 'race track', there is a rally area, go karts, drifting, 4x4, and a drag strip that we are counting down to open day.

🏎 Even if there is not a race on, the foyer to the Rydges is nothing short of motoring heaven. At quick numbers, there was in excess of 10-million dollars worth of automotive artistry when we were there, and it varies! If you are going through Tailem Bend en-route to anywhere, we highly recommend stopping in for a coffee and some vehicular eye-candy.

🏳 & 📘 Fremont Park
📍 Elizabeth

Kid rating 🍩🍩🍩🍩

🥶 We are the first to admit that our white flagging (walks) has been slow to kick start after winter. A winter where we have now become one of those families: the Saturday's spent on the sporting field in all conditions, and like so many (please agree here), we needed Sunday to thaw out/dry out/wash clothes/adult.

🥾 This is not one of those 'new year, new me' posts - it is plain and simply a 'we finally restarted our walking legs and we are good to go for 2023 and here is where we started' posts!

🚗 (meant to be a red Holden) Elizabeth is well known for being the old home to the Holden factory and, for most Adelaide folks, too far away/too far north and an abundance of excuses why they do not visit Elizabeth. We are not regulars, in fact, I could not tell you the last time we were there prior to Sunday, but the place is going forward in leaps and bounds if Fremont Park is anything to go by! Not only is this a nice easy walk to get the legs moving (there is a 1km loop also) but there is a decent playground that is the ideal bartering tool to get those little legs moving. The park is huge as it is but it is being redeveloped and will be bigger and greener than ever before.

🚲 All the walkways are sealed so they are pram, scooter, push bike, and skateboard friendly and as you wind around the park you will come across a second (smaller/original) playground, a duck pond with fountains, and ample amenities around the new playground.

🧭 As is the case with many South Australian families, our ancestry is diverse and came to Adelaide many moons ago. The Migration Museum has often been a stop for us when in the city to find the 'Great Grandparent Brick' but we had never ventured inside... and by inside, there are several areas that make up the Migration Museum and all take in different countries and/or cultures. So the next time you are wandering around our great city, turn in the small gates and spend some time learning about our cities migration history.

🚩 Toogood Brick Kilns/James Brickworks
📍 Toogood Ave, Beverley (Behind 36ers Arena)

🧱 Adelaide has plenty of historical locations relating to bricks, and the making of bricks. The most obvious being The Brickworks at Thebarton. But one locations takes you inside the world of brick making and is somewhat unknown. We only found it when back street hopping to find a coffee shop.

🔎 The amount of information provided around the Brickworks is brilliant, you will walk away with a new found appreciation for everything that went into it, and if your kids are anything like ours, they will love looking at the way everything is pieced together.

⌚ It is important to note, the James Brickworks are open 8:00am to 3:30pm, Monday to Friday excluding Public Holidays.

🚩 Historic Two Wells
📍 Two Wells

🚰 Most towns have a story about their name; Elizabeth, Thebarton, Adelaide, Sunshine Coast, Gold Coast, the list is endless. But did you know Two Wells is known as Two Wells, because of Two Wells? Well, well, well (I know that is three but that's how it goes) you can now see there are Two Wells at Two Wells and that is why it is called Two Wells (if only we were getting paid for how many times we say Two Wells 🤑). There is a story behind the wells but instead of plagiarizing someone elses work, lets reference our friends WeekendNotes Adelaide check out https://www.weekendnotes.com/two-wells-south-australia/

🚜 There is work under way around the historic wells, there is a new undercover area, as well as some nicely placed farm machinery. This little gem is a great stop over before you spend the next couple of hours on the road, or a nice leg stretch before coming back to town. Or as we did, Two Wells then playground hop around the new estates being built out that way.

We are still here 😅

This winter was wetter and woollier than usual so we chose to lay low and redo some adventures that have already been posted. But with day light savings returning and the sun starting to shine, we will be back out and about in Adelaide and surrounds.

Do you have an adventure of your own that you want to share with us? please send us a DM, we are always looking for ideas.

🚩 St Peters Cathedral
📍 North Adelaide

⛪ Is there a better known church in the country? How many times per cricket match does the camera man pan to the cathedral? The list of acknowledgments would fill pages, and that is before you step inside!

🛐 There is no need to be of a particular religion, nor any need to practice when touring the cathedral. Regardless, visiting and going on a tour of St Peters Cathedral is a must for any South Australian and their visitors. The workmanship in the organ, the leadlight windows, the tiling, the historical items around the cathedral, the list goes on.

🤔 If you have not picked up on it yet, this is another post where we are not going to tell you all about it, you need to go yourself. The only reason we have posted some of these 'tour only' photos is because you need to understand the brilliance of this landmark. Get on over to North Adelaide on a tour day/night and be prepared to be in awe.

🚩 Nature Play Cubby Zone & Amphitheater Rock
📍 Belair National Park

⛺ You see them throughout our stunning national parks, but the team at Belair NP have taken the nature play cubby concept and mixed it with workshops: creating a space where the equipment is there waiting for you to build a stick tee-pee! We think ours turned out really good. Needed a media room and an extra bedroom but we were thankful it stayed upright.

🤘 We decided to leave our tee-pee up to bask in the glory of our engineering brilliance, and headed off to take in the expansive Bunya Bunya pine trees that create the Pineway Corridor before heading upwards to Amphitheater Rock. This is not a long walk so adds another layer to an afternoon in the Eastern end of Belair NP. Once the walk was over, so was our tee-pees time so down it came and laid itself out waiting for the next family to come along and build their house in the hills.

🚩 Victoria Park Wetlands
📍 Victoria Park / Pakapakanthi (Park 16)

🌱 So the photos are average at best (we were taking it all in) and this write up will be no better. Both these issues relate to the fact that photos and my writings would not do this project justice. There has been so much that has gone into this wetlands, from money, to planning; and by planning that is flood mitigation, floral considerations, wildlife, and the list goes on.
