I've been encouraged to draft a hobbledehoy memoir of sorts by a friend... an exercise in self-reflection on pivotal times over the last 18 years (and counting). It's been surprisingly refreshing and emotional, sprinkled with tales of "the indu$try" ᕙ(⇀‸↼‶)ᕗ . Of course, right? Our little indie music communities are very small, bound to happen! Last night I started on a moment where an artist started working with hobble, their previous label (now less than shy about their new standing) began making things difficult for another one of "their artists" attempting a similar manoeuvre. I can't even. At the time I wasn't as accepting of what was still out of my own control as I think I should have been. But it's probably a great time to remember that mean people suck and kindness is a character strength. Artists, forever.

For years now, Rajab and helpers have been supporting the children of Palestine, building a community around the joy of skateboarding. Constructing and rebuilding skateparks that are constantly under threat and destroyed by oppressive regimes and war. Supplying the children with clothes, skate equipment, food and helping them find their joy too in all that skating has to offer. The story of how the Purplene / Hobbledehoy partnership came to be starts a while back. 16 years ago, I saw a footage of Charge Group performing Lunar Module live and fell completely in love (you can still find it on youtube, it was one of their earliest shows). I was then lucky enough to work with the band a few years later, but Matt and I would occasionally talk about the previous project Purplene and how important their self-titled album was to me.
Originally released in 2004, I adored that record. I would talk anyones ear off who was willing to listen if they even showed the slightest bit of interest. It was adventurous with plenty of hooks to draw you in. The lyrics unfolded in your head in a way a good book can, telling a story which continues to resonates further long after you've put it down. So when the opportunity came to reissue the album and book a run of shows to celebrate, Hobble jumped at it. Carl was hard at work liaising with venues, coordinating schedules, etc and I was handling the release. Together we were finding press opportunities and a lot of genuine love for a band that meant so much to so many people. That was 2018, and now the album is 20 years old, it was high time to repress (pre-order in the Hobble store now).
A lot has changed since, including the untimely passing of both Purplene's Dave Ledlin and album engineer Steve Albini. But there's plenty to be grateful for. This album remains an artefact testament to so much good still in the world 🖤

When Caspian (USA) were here in Australia touring early 2014, after a long trip of the back of a run of shows in Asia, Phil and I were talking current state of music. It was the end of the tour in Adelaide, he was asking curious questions like the national minimum wage at the time, comparing that to how the double LP gatefold vinyl of their album was priced. (He also insisted on teaching me how to "eat" a beer, eg inhale it in one fell swoop... story for another time.) As artists, it was obvious where their priorities were, and how much they cared about fans.
Genuine love of the craft. Hobbledehoy has been very lucky to have worked with and be positively influenced by so many beautiful people.

In the increasing complicated world of music and small business, a chance to look at what is important, and decide how we want to show up. After 18 years of releases with lots of busy and quiet periods, it feels clear that a decidedly slow and steady approach is what we need right now for 2024. These guiding principles aren't so much new as they are an articulation of what was already in our hearts and heads. Now brought to the front, where they belong.

Persevere and preserve
An art project disguised as a business. We're in it for the long game.
