Sometimes, the stamps on your passport tell their own story. I visited Liberia, right as the second Liberian Civil War was ending. I had been invited on a project to restore communication links to the war weary city. Although, I knew my s**t, I wasn't the best telecoms engineer out there to do the job, but most people wouldn't go... So, I was asked if I wanted to go. I chose to go because:

1. I was curious to see what a war zone looked like. I didn't witness the Nigerian Civil War, but my Dad fought and was injured in it. I wanted to know what it would have felt like to travel around Biafra just as the war was ending. I wanted to hear the war stories... To put myself in the shoes of the victims.

2. I felt that, after enduring so much trauma, the people of Monrovia deserved a decent communication link for whatever it was worth and
3. The gig paid really well! 😁

It was a profound experience. From the skeletons of electric poles stripped bare of wiring on the way from the airport... The scars left by exploding ordinance that landed on the roads. The sandbags and check points you encountered every 500m and the faces of traumatised people trudging forlornly on their way, a people eviscerated by war.
I remember Jeremiah, my 14yo body guard who sat by my hotel room door on what looked like a school chair with his AK-47 lying casually on his lap. I remember his response when I asked if he had killed anybody. "Many people, my man". When, I asked "10?" he shook his head and smiled casually, "more". "20?" same reaction. By the time I got past 50, I decided I didn't really want to know.
I remember Leonard, my conscripted technician, who told me the story of Operation Octopus... The night of October 12, 1992 when Charles Taylor sent a wave of drugged and armed children into the streets of Monrovia in an attempt to capture it. How ECOMOG was taken by surprise. How they had to rally & fight in the swamps. How the Senegalese contingent that contributed to repelling that attack all had to be sent home right after because they were traumatised - they had gunned down so many children that night, the world stopped making sense.
I remember Leonard telling me about how hunger almost killed his family. How they lost their baby. How he had to sell his car for half a bag of rice, because car you can replace, but life is precious. I remember him breaking into tears in the middle of a sentence before saying "we suffered, my man! We suffered".

It was a sobering experience for me. I never knew I had a romanticised view of war until I got to Monrovia and I saw faces that had witnessed a thousand deaths. Until then, my view of war had been shaped only by movies and comic books. War isn't a 3hr flick where your favourite people win in the end. It is months and months of hell where the only thing that keeps happening is people dying in the most horrific way. As we moved around the city, my hosts would point to exact spots where loved ones and people they knew perished. You could still see the scars of the terror that took their lives.

War humbles everyone. Vanquishes every one. We all lose.

The only people that win are the people who sell you arms. They remain to feed on your desolation like vultures.

BREAKING: ANOTHER CRISES BREWING IN KADUNA AS A MUSLIM SOLDIER SHOT A CHRISTIAN YORUBA BOY DEAD:

Arise News247 reports that a Muslim soldier has just shot a Christian Yoruba boy dead in front of Command Secondary School in Command Junction By Sabo Express Road, Kaduna.

An eye witness, Joshua Ayo, who spoke with Arise News247 Kaduna correspondent said that the boy was packing sand in front of the Military Secondary School called Command Secondary School when the soldier ordered him to stop.

Ayo added that, "the boy who is a Yoruba Christian pleaded with the soldier to allow him pack the sand to get something to eat today, since he was packing inside gutter that belongs to nobody."

Our source added that the soldier "got angry and shouted, 'Who the hell is this bloody civilian to argue with me?' and the boy was approaching him when the soldier again said, 'And you advancing towards me?' And before one could say Jack Robinson we heard gunshot and people around ran away, then another gunshot that attracted people from other places," Ayo lamented

He further explained that it was when other people started running down that those who were running away turned back to join them.

"On getting back to the spot, the soldier was nowhere to be found: we only met the lifeless body of the boy in the pool of his own blood, stone dead." He concluded.

The youths then carried the dead body of the boy and laid his co**se directly at the entrance of the Command Secondary Schools.

Arise News247 correspondent asked if there could be any other reason that might have incited the soldier to have shot the boy dead. Ayo said, that they know the soldier and they know he is a Muslim, adding that since the soldier may be fasting, may be the mention of packing sand to sell "to eat" provoked him.

All efforts to get the story from the side of the military was abortive as Christian youths have gathered massively in front of the gate of the Command Secondary School and barricaded the entrance demanding that the soldier who murdered the boy in cold blood should be brought out for jungle justice.

Also the roads in front of Command Secondary School leading to Sabo, Romi and Gonin-Gora have been barricaded restricting vehicular movement.

Arise News247 correspondent also approached the Police Officers who helplessly stood by their vans watching the scenario and sending radio messages. But the Police Officers declined comment on the issue that led to the killing of the boy, insisting that they have no information, because they didn't know what led to it, that they were only called upon to maintain order.

Suddenly, another set of truck load of fully armed Police Officers arrived the scene in an intimidating manner. But the youths were unruffled as they advanced towards the Police asking them to start killing them.

One of them raised his voice and said that if any other civilian goes down then Kaduna will be on fire and some of the Policemen will not escape alive. He shouted, "This is a battle to finish!"
