In Matthew Gaudioโ€™s Ford Quadravan, it is 1974 all over again!

Vans are part of the lore and legend of 1970s America, conjuring images of rebellious pot smoking by bead-wearing, bell bottom-clad hippies. The vans in these hazy memories usually showcase wild paint treatments (often with suggestive graphics), waterbeds, and that ultimate accessoryโ€”s**g carpeting. The popularity of the pleasure van and the youth culture associated with it even spawned a series of โ€œvansploitationโ€ films that include 1977โ€™s ๐˜š๐˜ถ๐˜ฑ๐˜ฆ๐˜ณ๐˜ท๐˜ข๐˜ฏ (โ€œItโ€™s one mean machine!โ€), the same yearโ€™s ๐˜›๐˜ฉ๐˜ฆ ๐˜๐˜ข๐˜ฏ, and 1979โ€™s ๐˜๐˜ข๐˜ฏ ๐˜•๐˜ถ๐˜บ๐˜ด ๐˜‰๐˜ญ๐˜ท๐˜ฅ.

In sharp contrast, Ford Motor Co.โ€™s family-friendly sales material offered a wholesome version of vanning, with clean-cut young women and physically fit men having a wonderful timeโ€”often at the beach. In 1976, emphasizing the potential for customization, Ford hinted at the power of those mesmerizing van-life tales: โ€œโ€™Truckinโ€™ means imagination expressed in special paint, wheels, tires, s**g carpeting, and all the rest.โ€ In 1977, the company promoted its models as โ€œa giant step for vankindโ€ while promoting the concept of โ€œFree Wheelinโ€™โ€ across its truck lines. Sales material suggested optional paint and tape schemes; black, low-gloss bumpers; and blackout grilles. (Strangely, s**g carpeting did not appear on the options list.)

This 1932 Dodge UF-10 pickup hauled a lot of hammers โ€ฆ maybe.

The year is 1932, and America is in the depths of the Great Depression. The owner of a small hardware store in Boston needs a delivery vehicle, and Dodge has just lowered the price of its 4-cylinder UF-10 1/2-ton pickup to $500. After carefully reviewing the numbers in a leather-bound ledger, the merchant decides he has just enough in reserve funds to afford a new Dodge, but not enough for the $580 6-cylinder F-10. Thus, the little green pickup featured on these pages begins life as a delivery truck for the hardware store.

The Dodge serves the vendor well and is still being used when World War II breaks out in 1939. After the United States enters the war in late 1941, rationing begins, and no civilian pickups are manufactured between 1942 and 1945. With good care, the little 1/2-ton continues its duties until 1949 when our hardware merchant trades it for a new Dodge B1C 1/2-ton.

This 1990 Chevrolet 454 SS pickup has only traveled 113 miles in 35 years! Super clean and oh so cool! ๐Ÿ˜Ž

The 454 SS was a perfect platform for Chevroletโ€™s fuel-injected big-block V-8. Chevrolet gained bragging rights, declaring the truck was โ€œthe worldโ€™s most powerful production 1/2-ton pickup.โ€ The view of our featured pickupโ€™s impeccable engine bay is what one would expect to see on the showroom floor. The engine was dubbed the โ€œTonawanda V-8โ€ because it was manufactured at the General Motors Tonawanda Engine Plant in Buffalo, New York.

Knight Terra
Coleman Knightโ€™s low-mile 1978 Scout Terra represents Internationalโ€™s last pickup model!

April 28, 1975, was a notable day in the history of International trucks, as the last of the companyโ€™s Light Line pickups rolled off the assembly line in Springfield, Ohio. International Harvester Corp. had, in essence, given up on the 1/2-ton to 1-ton light-duty truck category. The company was keener on maintaining its heavier-duty truck markets than investing in making the light-duties emissions compliant; plus, sales had been diminishing over the previous decade. The news meant there would be no more full-sized pickups, crew cab Travelettes, or Travelall wagons.

Or did it?

The Light Line was finished, but International was still building the Scout II. Through 1975, International offered three variants of the versatile multi-purpose vehicleโ€”the Travel-Top wagon, a pickup, and an open-top roadsterโ€”presented here in order of sales volume. All three were made on a common 100-inch wheelbase chassis and body tub with interchangeable tops (and bulkhead for the pickup below the rear window to seal off the interior from the cargo box). Without a proper 1/2-ton pickupโ€”and especially with the loss of the Travelallโ€”dealers lamented only offering the Scout II.

IHC foresaw this and developed a long-wheelbase version of the Scout II, introduced for the 1976 model year. With a removable long-roof wagon, it was called the Scout Traveler (readily harkening to the recently discontinued Travelall). When equipped with a cargo box, bulkhead behind the seats, and removable pickup cab top, it became the Scout Terra, such as our feature vehicle.

NEW DEAL CHEVY
This 1936 Chevrolet FC Coupe Pick-Up was a rare bright spot during the Great Depression!

Historians consider the Wall Street Crash of October 1929 to be the start of the Great Depression, with the devastating impact on businesses large and small peaking in 1933โ€”a time when unemployment in the United States reached a staggering 24.9 percent. During this period, some 86,000 businesses closed, farm income dropped by 50 percent, and average weekly earnings in manufacturing declined from $24.77 to $16.21. More than 9,000 banks failed from 1930 to 1933.

In 1936, President Franklin Delano Rooseveltโ€™s promised New Deal recovery plan had been in effect for three years. The economy was slowly improving, although unemployment was an abnormally high 16.9 percent and hard times remained for many Americans. Mindful of its struggling customers, GMโ€™s budget brand Chevrolet borrowed a successful idea from Australia (see sidebar) and created a model that was both a comfortable passenger car and a light-duty pickup. The company predicted that business owners would be especially attracted to the idea of a โ€œtwo for the price of oneโ€ vehicle.

The STREETBEATER
Fred Sanfordโ€™s 1951 Ford F-1 is alive and well in Ohio!

Of all the automobiles that have appeared on big and small screens since the birth of cinema and television, only a handful qualify for โ€œiconโ€ status. The 1966 Batmobile, 1968 Ford Mustang from Bullitt, 1969 Dodge Charger from Dukes of Hazzard, 1977 Pontiac Trans Am LE from Smokey and the Bandit, and 1982 Pontiac Trans Am from Knight Rider are instantly recognized the world over, but readers of this magazine will be delighted to learn that an unassuming, classic pickup has elbowed its way into that exclusive club.

On Friday, Jan. 14, 1972, a socially relevant comedy series in the vein of All in the Family and M*A*S*H debuted on NBC. Sanford and Son starred nightclub comedian Redd Foxx and was an adaptation of the long-running British Broadcasting Corp. (BBC) program Steptoe and Son. The show was set in the contemporary Watts neighborhood of Los Angeles, where Fred Sanford and son Lamont (portrayed by Demond Wilson) barely made ends meet running a junkyard...

MAY/JUNE 2024 | WHAT HAPPENED TO YOUR TRUCK?
Northwest Seaplanesโ€™ โ€œfloat trucksโ€ get double- and triple-takes!

"People from all over the world come here so we can fly them to the San Juan Islands, Vancouver Island, Inside Passage, and other destinations, but the first thing they ask when they get here is, โ€˜What happened to your truck?โ€™โ€ said Shane Carlson, owner of Northwest Seaplanes in Renton, Washington.

Carlsonโ€™s air service runs a fleet of five vintage de Havilland Beavers and maintains another 35 customer aircraft, all of which are equipped with pontoons (or โ€œfloatsโ€) for water landings and takeoffs. Based at Renton Municipal Airport (International Civil Aviation Organization code KRNT) near Seattle and located at the southernmost tip of Lake Washington, Carlsonโ€™s company is part of the most active float plane community in the continental United States. Tourists, fishermen, and hunters who want to scoot around millions of acres of wilderness and water with no concern for pavement hire Northwest and other firms for such excursions.

May/June 2024 | Hidden Hoosier Hauler
Greg MacKenzie discovered his 1917 Indiana Model T in a crawl space!

In 1998, Greg MacKenzie was at a truck show when a friend suggested they visit a garage owned by Lou Capacelli, the operator of several New Jersey Turnpike service stations. The building in New Rochelle, New York, had been unattended for years, and the pair had to cut brush away from the door to get inside. At the back of the garage was a tipped-over Indiana in rough condition.

โ€œIt was love at first sight,โ€ MacKenzie claims.

Sometime in the 1960s, Capacelli bought the still-running, well-worn truck from a farmer in Maine and stored it in his New York warehouse. Over time, insects feasted on the wooden cab and body, or, as MacKenzie characterized it, โ€œThe termites held their Eastern convention in the truck.โ€

โ€œYou want to preserve the memories of where things were when something like [losing a parent] happens to you,โ€ he said. โ€œThe truck is not just about something from my childhood or only the memory of my father; it is a family heirloom that I will pass doโ€‘wn to my son Paul and that he will preserve for another generation.โ€

Too Good To Pass Up

Vintage Truck began as This Old Truck in 1993 to fill a unique niche in the old truck hobby. It now has a circulation of 55,000+ readers.

Vintage Truck covers light-duty commercial vehicles of all makes and models that are two tons in capacity and smaller. This includes pickups, panels, vans, sedan deliveries, station wagons, and myriad specialized vehicles.

Our magazine focuses on restored and original trucks as well as the daily drivers that our readers find so useful. We offer technical and historical articles and provide a forum for readers to showcase their favorite trucks. In 2002, we changed the name of our magazine from This Old Truck and updated our look.
