On this , as the world calls for urgent action to combat climate change, it’s crucial to acknowledge the trade’s role in deepening environmental crises. 🌍

In the heart of fragile ecosystems and pristine forests, the cultivation of crops like leaves is driving and habitat destruction.

For instance, in Colombia, UNODC’s 2022 report revealed that forest reserves and national parks contained 24% of the country’s coca cultivation, about 55,000 hectares. While not the primary cause of deforestation, coca farming spearheads the spread of agricultural frontiers.

The journey from coca leaves to ***ne hydrochloride involves the use of harmful precursor chemicals , which are often released unfiltered into the environment, polluting soils and waters.

The 2023 chapter on “The Nexus Between Drugs and Crimes that affect the Environment and Convergent Crime in the Amazon Basin” shed lights on the environmental and social impacts of this crime ecosystem in the region.https://www.unodc.org/res/WDR-2023/WDR23_B3_CH4_Amazon.pdf

For more information on the environmental effects of the illegal drug trade, take a read of Journal of Illicit Economies and Development (JIED)'s special issue which draws from a broad array of phenomena, perspectives, and disciplines whilst emphasizing the need to address environmental consequences alongside security and social aspects. "Decentralisation is not in itself a good or bad thing. Designed strategically to take advantage of the insights offered in this book on politics and mechanism design, it can promote democracy, efficiency, and accountability. We can say that with confidence, because it is documented in our book."
