A New Vision: Giving and Policy Advocacy

African Americans of had the vision of a state supported school that would meet the needs of the race. The promised to establish such a school with African American support to capture the Governor's house. The Party won with a worker multiracial coalition over the conservative, monied and white faction. Delegate wrote the bill and the plans of the school calling it . Harris, the mostly Black Board of Visitors, the all Black teaching staff to include first (2) principals and first president, and the first 126 students to enroll between March 6, 1882 and 1884 all had a vision. Collectively, they cobbled together the first Black public school of higher education in the state of Virginia.

Through the years, "the school on the " has been impacted by many types of visions, to include the firing of founder Alfred William Harris from the Board, those who wanted to abolish the school, took away the college program, to be just an industrial school, managed by (4) white colleges when the Board of Visitors was abolished, and not being fully funded in its first year as promised due to hostility. Through it all, 140 years later endures.

However, a new vision is needed.

The new vision should be (2) fold.

1). Alum, Faculty, and Friends should be committed to constantly giving small dollar amounts to help with various costs.

2). Small dollar amounts are not enough as advocacy for policies at the State and Federal level that benefits is needed. VSU need policy advocates that will ensure its survival into the future.

3). Therefore, we need more Futurists. These are alum, faculty and Friends who look ahead, monitor trends in higher education, monitor policy related, and get the school in a beneficial position.

4). Form robust Giving Committees and Advocacy Groups for VSU, today, tomorrow, and forever.

The Men of New Water Forms Initiative

The Men of New Water, Incorporated was established in 1997 and founded on the campus of Virginia State University Tuesday, March 4, 1997 by 23 Black men. Today, the Men of New Water is a non-profit all male mentoring organization that promotes cultural and character development in young men. The Men of New Water teaches skills necessary to become citizens and leaders in the community. Last year, a select group of members have created and launched a subsidiary of the organization. Envisioned by Gregory Washington ('01) called upon Kyle Brooks-Gasper ('02), Damany "Smiley" Mayfield ('02), Jakuta Williams, Nicaulus Threatt ('03), Amir Brown ('05), and Lorenzo James ('04) to launch The New Water for Humanity Initiative.

These men were selected by Washington because they projected upstanding character, experience, and willingness to participate in uplifting Black men and other minorities.

The initiative was launched on Juneteenth and responding to the socio-political events related to George Floyd's murder by the Minneapolis Police Department. The initiative has a heavy task, in that the founders intend to; be part of social change beyond social media, become a leading voice in humanitarian efforts, spread love, unite broken communities and share experiences through 1-to-4-minute video clips and focusing on 30-45 years old population.

The Men of New Water, Incorporated can be reached by its website (www.newwater.org) and the New Water For Humanity can be accessed via its social media footprint on Instagram. (https://instagram.com/newwater_for_humanity?utm_medium=copy_link)
