Happy 52nd birthday to former Florida State All American linebacker Marvin Jones. Although Jones grew up in Miami's Coconut Grove community, he chose to attend high school at Miami Northwestern in Liberty City. The Jones' family sent Marvin to Northwestern because the school had a Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps program, and the Jones family felt that the program's hard work and discipline would serve him well later in life. His uncle was also the school's head basketball coach at the time. Nicknamed "Shade Tree" Jones played in the annual Soul Bowl game at the Orange Bowl between inner city rivals Northwestern and Jackson High Schools. A tackling machine, Jones was arguably the most dominant high school linebacker to come out of Miami-Dade County. He was named Prep All American by USA Today, Parade Magazine.

Although he's from Miami, Jones decided to follow in the footsteps of his older brother Fred Jones who played linebacker for the Noles from 1983 to 1986. From the time he arrived in Tallahassee, Jones was a dominant force. He lead FSU in tackles all three years and was named All American along with winning the Butkus Award in 1992 given to college football's best linebacker. Despite all his success at FSU, there were two things he never accomplished-- a victory over Miami and a national championship. Jones later became a first round draft pick by the New York Jets in 1993 where he played his entire 11 year career. His son Marvin Jr. was a talented player at American Heritage School in Plantation, FL. The younger Jones is currently a defensive end at FSU.

Florida State head coach Bill Peterson is pictured with quarterback Steve Tensi and receiver Fred Biletnikoff in 1964. Although Bobby Bowden gets most of the credit for putting FSU football in the map, the truth is Peterson had the Noles emerging as a force in the 1960s. Peterson took over at FSU in 1960, when the football program was barely over a decade old. But he quickly built an underrated power in Tallahassee during the 1960s. From 1960 to 1970, Peterson racked up a record of 62-42-1 at FSU. His 1964 team finished 9-1-1, defeating Oklahoma in the Gator Bowl and finishing 11th in the nation.

Under Peterson, FSU enjoyed tremendous success against rival Miami. During the Peterson era, the Noles played the Canes 7 times. The Noles were 5-2, including 5 consecutive victories from 1960 to 1966. All of those games were played at the Orange Bowl.

But perhaps Peterson's greatest legacy was helping many young coaches get their big break. He was known as the "Coach of Coaches". During his tenure at FSU, Peterson had a Who's Who of assistant coaches, including Joe Gibbs, Bill Parcells, Bobby Bowden, Don James, Dan Henning, Ken Meyer and many others.

Peterson later coached the Houston Oilers in 1972 and 1973. He got a rough introduction to the NFL when his Oilers faced the 1972 Dolphins in Miami's home opener at the Orange Bowl. Final score Dolphins 34 Oilers 13. The Oilers were an awful team at the time. Peterson was 1-18 as Houston head coach. He was fired after the fifth game of the 1973 season, his last as head coach. Peterson would later return to the Sunshine State as athletic director at the University of Central Florida from 1982 to 1985. Peterson passed away on August 5, 1993. He was 73.

Happy 50th birthday to Scott Bentley. Florida State kicker Scott Bentley celebrates with backup quarterback Danny Kanell after making a 22 yard field goal to give the Noles an 18-16 victory over Nebraska in the 1994 Fed Ex Orange Bowl. The victory gave FSU its first national championship.

After heartbreaking losses to Miami due to missed field goals the previous two seasons, FSU head coach Bobby Bowden recruited Bentley out of Overland High School in Aurora, Colorado. Bentley was considered the nation's best high school kicker and made the cover of Sports Illustrated before he ever played a college game. Although Bentley had his share of ups and downs in college, he came through when FSU needed him the most. After college Bentley had short stints with the Atlanta Falcons, Denver Broncos, Kansas City Chiefs and Washington Redskins from 1997 to 2000. He was also a member of the 2001 World Bowl Champion Berlin Thunder of NFL Europa. Bentley has since returned to Colorado and works as a BDC Manager and is an avid softball player.
