February 4th, 1969: The final flight of the Valkyrie as the North American Aviation XB-70A-1-NA, departed on its very last mission from Edwards Air Force Base, to Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Ohio. NASA Test Lieutenant Colonel Pilot Fitzhugh L. Fulton, Jr., and Lieutenant Colonel Emil Sturmthal, taxied the Valkyrie up to the USAF museum where her engines wound down for for the final time and her log books were turned over to the museum curator.

KINGCOBRA UNVEILED!

Exciting news from Yanks All-American Air Museum — the Bell P-63 Kingcobra “Fatal Fang” will be unveiled to the public on 17 February. This is a chance for all enthusiasts to examine this ultra-rare aircraft up close and personal. Then, well-known Warbird pilot Chuck Gardner will take the P-63 up for a demonstration flight — giving spectators the opportunity to hear what this mid-engine fighter sounds like in flight.
Plan to spend the day at Yanks — the unique Fairchild C-123 Provider Aircraft Bar will be open and serving wine, beer, soft drinks, and water. Then, all of Yanks amusement rides will be operational for the “junior aviators” to enjoy.
The entire museum will be open including the restoration shop — the largest on the West Coast — and visitors will be able to see a number of aircraft under restoration to flight.
Yanks All-American Air Museum is located at Chino Airport at 15121 Stearman Drive and the museum opens at 10 am and closes at 4 pm. Panel discussion on the Kingcobra (one of just three flying today) begins at 11 am. For more information go yanksair.org or call 909-597-1735.
On 13 January, AIR CLASSICS had the privilege of doing the first aerial photographs of the Kingcobra. Chuck Gardner was flying the P-63 while Pat Nightingale was piloting Brandon Kunicki’s immaculate SNJ Texan. The complete history of Yanks’ P-63, along with never-before-published historic photographs, will be a major article in the April issue so make sure you get this issue now by calling 818-700-6868.

The Saab RF-35XD Draken moves into the Restoration Hangar for some love. When refurbished, it will be our first Swedish built aircraft on display. This reconnaissance fighter (RF) export for Denmark (XD) spent the 70s to the early 90s with the Royal Danish Air Force before chillin’ at Chino Airport.

RAREST DOUGLAS

For those who missed it, that obscure, unfamiliar aircraft from the last post was the Douglas DC-5, a capable yet unsuccessful product, essentially held back by the success of it's sibling, the DC-3/C-47. This has always been my favourite view of the DC-5 which had a style all of its own back in the day. The distinctive configuration later proved very successful for Fokker with the F-27, de Havilland Canada with a whole series of aircraft, and numerous others.

Video confirms the flying-wing aircraft has a simple W-shape trailing edge and reveals an extremely clean design with an almost featureless underside.
