In 79 AD, Mt Vesuvius erupted and destroyed the town of Pompeii. In just a few hours, thousands died but were preserved where they fell.
Since then, over the recent centuries, Pompeii has slowly been excavated revealing much about how the citizens of Pompeii lived their lives.
One very interesting discovery was the thermal mineral baths scattered throughout the city. In fact, in one thermal mineral bath, the preserved bodies of the bathers were still inside.
Last year, Archaeologists digging up the last corner of Pompeii have now found even more thermal baths – but unlike the others, these baths were surrounded by ceramic vases. What did they contain? No one knew. But last year, the remnants inside the vases were finally genetically analyzed and it was, ready for it, spaghetti. Yes, spaghetti.
After some thinking and analyzing the leftover spaghetti remnants found inside the baths, scientists figured out that, once the patrons were soaking in the hot volcanic mineral water, the spa attendants would toss in raw spaghetti to extract the toxins from the bather’s bodies.
There was some kind of chemical reaction going on between the volcanic minerals, the hot water and the spaghetti!
That’s right, the cooking spaghetti was able to extract the poisons from their bodies - leaving them healthier and looking better.
We had known that the Pompeiians were some of the most handsome and good looking of all the Romans of that time but we didn’t know why.
Now we do! It was the spaghetti treatment. And even more interesting, some of the remnants inside of the other jars turned out to be spices, vegetables and fruit – they found DNA of tomatoes, garlic, goat cheese, thyme, basil and other herbs.
What does this mean for YOU? Check out the new just opened, Pompeii Spaghetti Spa!
Exactly! That’s right, Spaghetti Spa patrons sit in a tub of hot volcanic mineral water and then we fill it up with raw spaghetti. The spaghetti slowly warms up, and as it softens, it sucks out the toxins and poisons from your skin and your body.
