Public camping on the Jordan River Parkway Trail in Salt Lake City has become a contentious issue, balancing the needs of homeless individuals with the preservation of public space. Despite a Supreme Court ruling allowing cities to enforce anti-camping laws, the humanitarian crisis persists. Tammy and her husband, unable to find housing, live near the river. Solutions Utah, led by Dale Keller, addresses homelessness through policy advocacy and clean-up efforts.

Eight-year-old Golden Retriever, Otto, who lives with his family in Cottonwood Heights, became a YouTube sensation by learning to speak English. So far he can say five words: Yes, No, Please, Danger, and Popcorn.

According to dog owners Heike and Kristian Hasselkopf, undocumented immigrants from Düsseldorf, Germany, many animals are capable of learning to speak.
Heike grew up with a parrot named Max who had an extensive vocabulary. However, Max suffered from brain cancer and in a fit of rage attacked Heike, causing her to develop bird phobia and PTSD.

Düsseldorf has a large bird population which made Heike’s life unbearable. “I did not dare to go outside at all, and spent all my days in front of a screen, binge-watching RTL Crime,” says Heike with tears in her eyes. Nine years ago, she left Germany and found safety and Kristian in Salt Lake City, Utah.

As Utah’s population continues to grow, there’s a sense that some of the state’s coolest outdoor spots ought to be kept secret. When it comes to natural rock formations or hidden fishing holes, secrecy probably is the best policy. When it comes to ski huts, however, growing popularity would help improve and develop these resources.

“It’s a passion project of mine to work towards more hut systems in Utah,” says Shaun Deutshander, founder, owner, and guide at Inspired Summit in Park City. She notes that while Utah only has a handful of ski huts, Colorado has 79. “The only way we’ll get more huts is if the public is using them.”

Currently, Utah has about 20 winter-use huts in high-elevation areas throughout the state. They’re owned by a variety of groups including parks and rec, clubs like YMCA and TUNA, and Utah State University. Others are bases for privately owned ski touring businesses. Overall, the huts are available for broad use: backcountry ski, split board, and snowshoe touring; snowmobiling and tubing; and summertime biking. Adventures can be guided or unguided; fully provisioned or bring-your-own. And while hut styles can run the gamut, those in Utah are typically yurts — circular canvas tents stretched over a wooden lattice framework.

Build Salt Lake reported that Harbor Bay Ventures had plans to redevelop the old Wells Fargo site at 1095 East 2100 South into a massive residential project that could reach 305 feet in height if a zoning change to the community’s 2005 master plan gets approval.
What do Sugar House residents think about it?

In 2017, when A Long Strange Trip – The Story of the Grateful Dead, had a private performance at The Spur Bar & Grill, the production process was immense. For weeks prior to the event, details like food and bar menus were being tweaked. In addition, the documentary’s organizers worked with city planners to arrange for special permits, including any temporary overhead or wrap-around signage that was required. Additionally, as the musical show was strictly for A-List entertainers, event security needed to be heightened.

According to Courtney Johanson, managing partner of four of Park City’s most popular dining destinations, there were five levels of security, including The Spur’s own private service. “Many of the fans had purchased The Spur’s t-shirts in advance, and then tried to get into the location by impersonating our wait staff. They would try to sneak in through the kitchen and the delivery doors. It was crazy.”

After working on Main Street since 1996, Johanson is a veritable savant at navigating the intricacies of the country’s largest cinema celebration — the Sundance Film Festival.

“Each year is just an incredible, fun, and intense time. I often go for 48 hours straight without sleeping,” Johanson exclaimed.

Her fête education began as a hostess at the young age of 14. With many firm words, impatient huffs, and “Don’t you know who I am’s?” being directed her way, the teenager quickly learned how to manage the expectations of spectators, fans, handlers, and talent.

Contrary to the common belief that only sickly horses are sold for meat, 92% of the equines slaughtered are healthy young animals. Owners take the horses that they love to be traded at an auction, but they don’t realize that often the horse is bought by a ‘kill buyer’ that contracts with a slaughterhouse.
