Utah Governor Cox offered remarks today at the Solutions Utah conference on homelessness. Governor Cox referred to a book he has read where the author believes that the pendulum has shifted too far towards compassion and it needs to swing back toward personal accountability. “It’s not compassionate to allow a person to slowly die on the streets from a drug addiction or live in a manner that is unsafe for everyone around them.”
Panelists at the conference included The Other Side Academy’s Executive Directors David Dorocher, Moe Egan and Carol Hollowell. They all agreed that homeless individuals require community, work and accountability to successfully combat problems associated with drug addiction and mental illness.

When you bike or walk or drive past the area in Glendale, where many people are camping beside the Jordan River it’s easy to make assumptions as to why they are there. (Lazy, drug users? ).
But it quite interesting to actually speak to these people and hear their stories. This husband and wife were camping along the Jordan river because they are not allowed in any shelters with their animals.
Further, they do not believe that the available homeless housing (permanent supportive housing) is a good element for them to recover and remain clean and sober.
What is the best solution for them? They are trying to save up enough money to get into normal housing where there will be no temptation or readily-available drug market. Why doesn’t the city clean up or stop all of the drug use happening in housing units?

Nine out of 10 Utahns live in urban areas, with urban regions making up only 1.1% of the state’s land but housing the majority of the population, according to the Deseret News. The University of Utah’s Kem C. Gardner Policy Institute’s analysis highlights that, despite similar income levels and educational attainment, urban and rural Utah differ in demographics, health metrics, and housing dynamics. Rural Utahns tend to be older, less racially and ethnically diverse, and more likely to own their homes, with a significant portion of housing used seasonally. To read more go to the Deseret News website.

Utah Stories interviewed residents on NorthTemple where a Major League Baseball stadium is slated to be constructed. We discovered folks there unanimously favored affordable housing over a MLB stadium. This experiment highlighted the discrepancy between working-class residents’ needs and legislative priorities. $2 billion in tax subsidies were allocated to the stadium and only hopeful measures passed in the legislature for housing.
In our more extensive feature story we find homeless men who can’t find jobs that pay enough to afford “deeply-affordable housing”. These case studies illustrate the dire need for actual affordable housing, which remains inaccessible to most working-class people. You can read the entire story by visiting UtahStories.com

According to The Utah Investigative Journalism Project, Lumio, a solar company, had reports of many customers who signed up for solar and got scammed. The Governor’s Office of Economic Opportunity (GOEO) board voted in September 2021 to award a $40 million tax incentive to Lumio in exchange for the company pledging to stay in Utah and bring 3,697 new high-paying jobs over the next 20 years, according to The Utah Investigative Journalism Project article. In the article it states, “Lumio refused multiple requests for an interview, initially criticizing the Utah Investigative Journalism Projects’ reporter as illegitimate after demanding they provide a formal license or credential.”

This magnificent canyon view is brought to us thanks to millions of years of glacial ice carving out sheer granite, which took hundreds of millions of years to form under the earth. The stunning result is a marvel unique in Utah.
We get to host thousands of visitors and locals who want to experience both the stunning canyon and the greatest snow on earth found on its slopes. Now our elites tell us this canyon cannot function unless we build a gondola (along with millions of tons of concrete and steel), to give visitors better access.
How do people become so incredibly arrogant and lacking in reverence for our natural wonders? Little Cottonwood canyon isn’t a “tourist destination” it’s a natural wonder, it’s a cathedral, it’s a sanctuary and it’s our primary water source for the area.
It’s beginning to dawn on more residents that this marketing ploy, dreamed up by elites is bad idea. What do you think? Should we put a gondola up Little Cottonwood Canyon?
Intermountain Therapy Animals (ITA) provides screened, trained, and licensed therapy dogs for courtrooms, where their calming presence aids in reducing stress for everyone involved, including judges, staff, and families. These dogs, carefully selected for their people-oriented nature, offer unique comfort to individuals navigating the legal system, particularly children facing traumatic situations. The impact of therapy dogs is profound, as seen in instances where previously hostile or nervous individuals become more relaxed and communicative in their presence. ITA’s program, initiated by volunteers like Linda Webster, has expanded to include numerous courtrooms, reflecting the recognition of the therapeutic value these animals bring to such environments.
