"I think we can all agree that this past summer was a bit, well, aggressive. 🤭

We love you summer, but as Shakespeare wrote, “Parting is such sweet sorrow.” Emphasis on the sweet. Welcome to September, my favorite month. Neither summer nor fall, September is a month of transition and thoughtfulness, the days grow shorter, the sky takes on its cobalt September blue and the hot summer fades into the rearview. This time of reflection is the perfect time to enjoy your musings over a cocktail, which is why we present our Farm-to-Glass Cocktail Contest every year." 🥃

Read Executive Editor Jeremy Pugh's full letter ahead of our September/October issue launch on Sunday! ⬇

In September's Editor's Letter, Executive Editor Jeremy Pugh attributes his love of fall to the opportunity for reflection over a cocktail.

John Hiner has seen a lot from the storied bar at Alta Club. From making classic cocktails to mixing it up with movers and shakers, he’s been a fixture there for over 30 years, and he has tales to tell. 🥃🧐

“I’ve had to reinvent myself perhaps 12, 15 times in the course of bartending,” Hiner says. “People have been bartending for 2,000 years, but we have trends that come upon us. One day, we are mixologists, throwing everything but the kitchen sink into our drinks. Other times, we are purists and ‘refine’ all the old drinks.” Find more of Hiner’s tales from behind the stick at the link in our bio!

For a fleeting period during late summer and early fall, fresh peaches reign as Utah’s most coveted crop. For Ryan Crafts, that means it’s time to get fired up. As the grill master for catering powerhouse Culinary Crafts, he is always looking for tasty ways to serve from the flames—and peaches offer bushels of inspiration.

“Peaches love the grill and can be served in both sweet and savory ways,” Crafts explains. Crafts takes us to the grill and fires up dishes that celebrate the versatility and vivacious flavor of Utah peaches. Things are going to get hot! ⬇🍑

Introducing our 2024 Cocktail Contest cover! 🍹🌟

For this year's Farm-to-Glass Cocktail Contest, we've asked the best bartenders in Utah to help us personify the forthcoming Autumn season. Eighteen bartenders from Park City, Salt Lake City and St. George answered our call with craft cocktails that make use of local ingredients and spirits. We have compiled their stories and entries into a metaphorical “Utah Cocktail Trail." 🙌

During September and October, we invite you to hike, stroll, saunter, (crawl?) your way around to taste these thoughtful tipples at each stop. You can vote for your favorites on our site, starting September 1st!

This issue will be on newsstands September 1st, keep an eye out for more information on our 2024 Farm-to-Glass Cocktail Contest next week! 🥂

Unlike most wine bars, the selection at Casot is limited. With an especially limited selection of wines by the glass, Scott Evans, the founder of the Pago Restaurant hand selects each varietal. 🍷

“I wanted 10 to 15 wines by the glass at all times, but wines that change every week. There’s always about three to five new wines every single week,” says Evans. The unifying rule of thumb? “I’ll carry anything I would personally enjoy,” says Evans.

Scelto co-founder Waleska Inglesis wants to offer a different dining experience to the Sandy community. Because when it comes to delivering stylish dining to our suburbs, chain restaurants come up short. Way short. Enter Scelto, a new Italian restaurant in the heart of Utah. “We designed the space to be inviting and have a cool, downtown vibe that’s not found in the southeast part of the valley,” she says. 👀

Teaming up with designers Gary Vlasik and Jamie Clyde, the Italian-inspired eatery Scelto is sleek, swanky and most importantly, delicious. Learn more about the restaurant’s design and menu at the link in our bio! 👏

There are several bars in Salt Lake we feel have mastered the art of the bar bite. They’ve gone above and beyond the ubiquitous pickled egg in a jar to offer a quick and delicious snack that is unique to their identity. 👏 Take for example , who has amassed a loyal fanbase for their filet & marrow tartare. Pro tip: Finish it off with a mezcal or whiskey bone marrow luge and thank us later. 🥃

Or, perhaps you’re after something lighter to pair with a balmy summer evening on the town. has you covered with their Asian-fusion snap peas—thai basil, mint, fresno peppers and coconut milk? Very demure, very mindful. 😉

Danielle Nicole Band took us on a magical musical ride last weekend at The State Room with her ultracool mix of blues, rock and soul. 🎸 With only three musicians, the band delivered an impressive 16-song performance. “Danielle Nicole, a superstar-caliber performer, drew us in from the first note and held us for the entire evening,” says music reviewer John Nelson. “To see her in a small listening room like The State Room felt like a VIP experience.” 🤩

08/13/2024

When you think of the storied wine regions of the world, Utah doesn’t even land on the list. And yet, our wine narrative has a deep history in our red soil. Early pioneer settlers were sent by Brigham Young on “wine missions” to Southern Utah to cultivate vineyards and produce wine. At one time, wine could even be used for paying tithing. 🍷👏

As the culture changed and the rules around drinking moved into a “thou shalt not” commandment territory, the vineyards were torn up and replaced with other crops. Luckily, we are fortunate to have wine enthusiasts bringing back Utah’s wine culture to a burgeoning vino-loving community.

Cycling and yoga should go hand in hand 🫶. Engaging in a regular yoga practice will not only double down on the flexibility and strength but will offer the bonus of mastering control of your breath—a particularly handy skill when you’re, say, trying to recover quickly in between climbs. 🚲

And though it might be tempting to engage in more challenging yoga classes on the regular, Jackie Wheeler of Mountain Yoga Sandy advises to take it a bit easier. "Most regular cyclists don’t need more intensity and can reap the greater benefits of oxygenating the whole body and active recovery by taking less intense classes.”

Find Wheeler's top poses for post-ride recovery below! ⬇

The benefits that cycling lovers can expect from doing yoga include increased flexibility and strength and better control of the breath.

It’s been 40 years since the iconic ’80s film Footloose was filmed in Utah County, and it still rings true for teenagers that are rising up against moral panics, censorship and fear of progress. 👏

The Footloose story is simple: city boy Ren moves to a small town, only to find local religious zealots have outlawed—gasp!—dancing and rock music. Rallying the repressed teen populace to his cause, Ren convinces the fire-and-brimstone preacher that dancing is good, clean fun, just in time for the senior prom. 🕺The Wasatch Front looms in the background of nearly every scene—the production bounced from Lehi and American Fork to Payson and Orem—and we can thank Footloose for Bacon’s spiky haircut becoming the iconic look for American men in the mid-’80s.

Hit the 🔗 in our bio to see where the cast of Footloose is now, and learn about Payson High School’s recent campaign to bring that attracted support from the Utah Film Commission, Gov. Spencer Cox and Mr. Bacon himself.

An electrical fire broke out on the roof and the kitchen on July 5th but luckily no one was hurt. Of course, the Mazza team has been working around the clock to reopen their doors, and are back to serving up authentic Mediterranean dishes. “We are not here to cut corners,” Ali said in a recent interview with our Salt Lake Magazine team. "We make our food every day from scratch. I slice the lamb myself. In doing so, we show respect for the dishes and the tradition.”👏
