Today in Photo Friday news, a new five-story Silicone Slope office building opens as the largest demonstration of mass-timber construction in Utah.

In a landscape of concrete and steel office buildings, it has been prestigious to have a wood-paneled office. The paneling seeks to reclaim a sense of spending time in a natural environment while at work. Then why aren’t offices built with wood?

Scot Zimmerman Photography explores this fresh new take on office space: https://www.utahstyleanddesign.com/photo-friday-replacing-concrete-with-steel-and-wood/

According to designer Danielle Domichel Hickman, this Deer Valley condo property needed "more design, more details, more character and more excitement" in order to fulfill the vision of her clients, who were after a ski home with all the right mountain retreat vibes.

Hickman came prepared with a plan to blend the Stein Eriksen residence's existing contemporary style with a modern mountain lodge look–a plan which included reimagining parts of the floor plan, providing stylish storage space and introducing a mix of curated decorative elements to achieve the desired look.

Rooftop lounges are in surprisingly short supply in downtown Salt Lake City, making Le Meridien Salt Lake City's Van Ryder lounge a rare, high-in-the-sky hotspot for anyone seeking spectacular views teamed with craft cocktails, artisanal bites and stylish digs, day and night.

The lounge boasts a decidedly rustic-meets-modern decor enhanced with floor-to-ceiling windows that frame its brilliant views of the mountains and the surrounding valley.

When a Northern California couple decided to build their family a year-round vacation home, they set their sights high—mountain high, that is. After choosing their prime location in Park City's Victory Ranch, the homeowners wanted to have a mountain home where they and their three teenagers could gather with friends and family in comfort and style.

To create this, they signed on architect Tim Furner of Highland Group, interior designer Carrie Delany and builder Anthony Jorgensen.

Take a look at the final product, a "mountain modern craftsman" home, featured in our current issue: https://www.utahstyleanddesign.com/house-tour-the-high-life-in-victory-ranch/

Coming Soon to Downtown Holladay: The Fox Market, where European style and charm meet Utah-made foods, fancies and furnishings.

Curated by the experts Tom and Cara Fox, a humble former Meier’s Chicken establishment transforms into a bustling neighborhood haven. At every turn, patrons discover specialty culinary offerings, from locally sourced meats and dairy items to Utah-made ice cream, teas and chocolates mingling with salads-to-go, a fresh-flower cart, a soda/drink bar and more.

Don't miss out on the shop's public grand opening, happening Saturday, February 3. https://www.utahstyleanddesign.com/holladay-welcomes-the-fox-market-this-february/

Let’s call it a historic move. This tiny miner’s cabin was built on its sloped site in the late 1800s. Within a single day, the simple structure was perched on a new foundation—elevated two feet higher above ground and nudged 16 feet away from its curbside resting place in Park City’s Historic District. The mastermind behind the raise and relocation is Pete Olson, principal of PJ Builders, Inc.

The “lift,” one of many Olson has performed on historic structures in Park City over the years, was part of an extensive remodel his clients wanted for their vacation home composed of the age-old cabin and an addition constructed in the ’70s.

Whether she is creating a space for her own family or designing homes for clients in Park City and Southern California, designer Stephanie Hunt—aka Flairhunter—believes the magic is always in the mix: old and new; high and low; bold and subtle; funky and refined.

Case in point: She adorns her walls with vintage Hermès scarves and retro skateboard decks with equal aplomb. “Life is serious; designing it should be fun,” Hunt says of her creative philosophy (and, appropriately, her business tagline).

Take a stroll through Hunt's blissfully unique Park City home with writer Tessa Woolf:

Newly incorporated, the City of Millcreek set a vision for its town center that called for it to be in an area designated for public use; to make it a true hub, heart and center connecting residents; to emphasize culture, art, ideas and citizen interaction; and to be distinctive from other cities’ city halls and unique to Millcreek. A tall order!

Fortunately, MHTN Architects, Inc. were up to the challenge. They worked on the city center master plan and designed the new city hall, and Okland Construction just completed construction. Immerse yourself in the city's innovative public space on our blog today, courtesy of Scot Zimmerman Photography.

Close your eyes and imagine a modern Parisian apartment with French doors flung open to dazzling city views. What kind of home are you picturing?

Indulgence and restraint merge into exactly the mix fashioned by designer AMB Design as she teamed with contractor Steve Dubell and architect Brian Junge to transform a gutted, two-story dwelling into the unique and luxurious residence their clients desired.

Likening it to a skeleton, architect Jack Smith says the bones of the home are steel.

“Steel is honest, and it is straight. Glass is the skin. And glass is a miracle! Imagine, it lasts, it is hard, clear and crystal, it can be colored, and it is fragile.” He then adds, “Concrete is also a miracle: mix together sand, gravel and cement and it takes shapes and has the hardness of stone.”

The title of this week's Photo Friday blog, “Glass and Steel – That’s the Deal,” is a frequent quote from Jack Smith’s modernist mentors. Take a look into this iconic Sugden home on the web today:
