Utah's magazine for the LGBTQ and ally community
20 years ago this very morning, I took delivery of the very first newspaper that would become QSaltLake Magazine. The delivery driver left Preston, Idaho (!) at 5 a.m. and met us at our office behind the Beto's on Denver Street and 4th South.
This was the culmination of 4 months of planning, selling ads, finding distribution points, attracting writers and photographers, and organizing a day of activities to launch the publication.
As delivery drivers ran up and down the Wasatch Front, I ran to the KUTV studios to be interviewed by Mary Nickles for a full three minutes. I then ran to the studios at Library Square of KCPW 88.3 to join Jennifer Napier-Pearce during their fund drive. After some lunch, I drove out to ABC4 Utah to be on the afternoon news. Then, I ran to the liquor store for wine and champagne for a celebration in the two presidential suites on the top floor of Hotel Monaco.
We were (and are) proud of the first issue. Nicholas Rupp wrote a fantastic 4-page story on same-sex marriage, including a full "myths of gay marriage" sidebar. We had stories of the Utah Log Cabin Republicans and Utah Stonewall Democrats at the Salt Lake County conventions, the story of a Lebanese man seeking asylum in Utah, a scoop that Utahn Kamrin Carver would be on the Dr. Phil show that KUTV didn't even know about, a Le***an Avengers rally that included a two-foot tall va**na, Code Pink protesting the 9th & 9th Smiths for locking condoms up, a thief targeting gay men using gay "chat rooms," and much more.
We are also proud that we have outlived chat rooms, three locations of the Utah Pride Center, and, hopefully, our inability to marry the person of our choice.
While I won't be on the television news today, nor will I be hosting a party in posh digs, I will have some champagne to toast 20 years. Please check out our online magazine or pick up a printed copy. And tell your favorite businesses to advertise in this year's Pride issue that goes to press in 3 weeks.
