In 2024, more than 360,000 people will be diagnosed with breast cancer. But there is hope. Advancements in early detection methods and support continue to increase the chances of survival. When caught in its earliest, localized stages, the 5-year relative survival rate of breast cancer is 99%.

HEALTHWATCH: Instead of having no other option but to drive 2+ hours for a kidney transplant, Carilion Clinic is working to open a kidney transplant center at RMH. Carilion has filed a certificate of public need with the Virginia Department of Health and now awaits their approval. I spoke to a local couple about the difficulties of the drive and why they hope these services will soon be offered in Roanoke.

HEALTHWATCH: Carilion Clinic said the need for kidney transplants will increase by nearly 35% over the next five years in our region.

Yet, the nearest transplant center is a two to four hour drive away. Carilion is trying to change that and is working to open a kidney transplant center in Roanoke. But, they need VDH approval first. HEALTHWATCH: The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that 1 in 7 U.S. adults have chronic kidney disease. It is the 9th leading cause of death in the country. In Virginia, there are currently over 2,300 residents on the state’s waitlist for kidneys. Nationally and regionally, kidney disease is increasing. Joey (pictured) just received a lifesaving transplant. Because he is so young, he will likely need another in his lifetime. While he is happy with the care offered at UVA, traveling can be taxing physically and financially. In times of tragedy, having support from your community can make all of the difference. Giles County, Virginia is offering $2,000 to flood victims in Giles to cover first months rent or security deposits. The community has also come together to offer overwhelming support for those in need. Senator Mark Warner visited Giles County today to tour the historic flood damage and see what he can do to get more help from the government.

In times of tragedy, having support from your community can make all of the difference, and in Giles County, since the historic floods caused from Helene, that is exactly what is happening.
