09/11/2022

As we move into September/October in Arizona, we start to get into the part of monsoon season called the "transition season." This occurs as large-scale weather systems (troughs), which are generally absent from the Southwest in the summer, begin to move in from the Pacific. These act on leftover monsoon moisture to create occasional bouts of severe weather across the state; in fact, Arizona's most notable tornado and severe thunderstorm events tend to occur during the transition season.

Tomorrow (Monday, Sept. 12), it looks like Arizona will see its first transition season setup of the monsoon, as former Hurricane Kay's remnants will inch east as an open wave, placing Arizona in its exit region (where favorable lift for storms exists). Ample leftover moisture from Kay and much cooler air aloft should efficiently destabilize the atmosphere; this, along with enhanced wind shear from an increase in flow aloft, should set the stage for an active severe weather day across Arizona, particularly central/southern parts of the state. Damaging winds, blowing dust, and large hail will be possible with storms tomorrow.
