Delaney Metcalf: "When we eat food made by strangers in a rush, we don’t think about where it came from—the farmers who grew it, the animals who gave their lives, the earth that sustained it all. We just consume. And consumption without reflection eventually makes us hollow."

Ken Sehested: "I now believe there is no observance in the liturgical year in greater need of recovery than All Saints Day. In turbulent times and turgid circumstances, we need the sustenance of resilient memory.

Remembrance of those gone before us provides the buoyancy to continue the struggle despite bleak prospects."

Kerri Fisher: We might not claim either extreme as our personal philosophy in all circumstances. But I would hope that in studying service to each other, we would find ourselves, if ever so slightly, on one end of this continuum, because stakes matter.

Kali Cawthon-Freels: As a life-long nerd, I’ve often found sci-fi, fantasy, and other fictitious media avenues through which to understand current events. Few movies describe our current cultural moment as well as “Wakanda Forever,” the sequel to Marvel’s hit “Black Panther.”

Craig Nash: Many stories have been told and written about Kyle’s life, that moment, the moments leading up to it, and the years after, as we sought to make sense of our friend’s legacy and the tragedy that took him from us. This week, I’ve been thinking about the final year of his time on earth.

As we approach this week, may we love God, embrace beauty, and live life to the fullest.

Rev. Dr. Mark Sandlin: "Part of what makes rebuilding so hard is that our spiritual reflexes were trained in certainty. We want a blueprint, a perfect theology, a tidy list of beliefs so we can feel like we’ve arrived.

But reconstruction isn’t about replacing old certainty with new certainty. It’s more like learning to build while walking."

Read more:

Reconstruction means finding or forming spaces where mutual care replaces mutual judgment.

In this week's sermon, Rev. Ashley Gill Harrington focuses on the lament of Habakkuk and the familiar story of Zacchaeus. She uses the juxtaposition to explore “mishpat,” which sometimes “comes as a drip before it can roll down as Amos envisions.”

Rev. Harrington is associate pastor of children and church communications at Georgetown Baptist Church in Georgetown, Kentucky.
