GFM Intern Samuel Shepley interviewed the lead singer and songwriter of Dialup Ghost, Russell Finn, at Living Waters Brewery in Nashville: “I surround myself with those people who are, I guess, the underdogs in this cruel world, and I feel the need to just stick up for them.”

Dialup Ghost’s new record, “May You Live Forever in Cowboy Heaven,” showcases their love of indie rock balladry, the slacker rock heroes of the 90s, and the many other artists they namecheck directly in their lyrics and on the inside cover of their CD.

Craig Nash: Pharaohs are always going to Pharaoh. They can’t help themselves.

Placing the maintenance of their status over the common good, they’ll create “restructuring plans” or “departments of government efficiency” from their penthouses and private jets.

Pharaohs are always going to Pharaoh. They can’t help themselves. They’ll create “restructuring plans” or “departments of government efficiency” from their penthouses and private jets, and it will all be under the guise of “slackers” and “lazy workers.”

Lamar Wadsworth: They are not criminals. They are good neighbors to their neighbors.

Their presence in this country harms no one and benefits many. They aren’t just citizens, they are better citizens than this rogue president and his cronies who demonize them.

When our rogue president painted a target on my friend and her family, he painted a target on Jesus. That's what Jesus himself said. I'm just quoting Jesus.

Josh Carney: To understand Evangelicalism’s origin, one must begin with 20th-century fundamentalism, which was partly defined by the Scopes Monkey Trial.

I am not concerned about President Trump's response to the word “mercy.” I don’t expect him to know any better. But as for Franklin Graham and the like, this is a damning historical moment.

Miguel A. De La Torre: One of the practices I hold to be true is the conviction of radical solidarity. The character of the God I claim to believe in stands in solidarity with whoever is being oppressed–not because they are holier, but because they are marginalized.

Although most have referred to me as “he,” “him,” or “his,” it was not that important to me which pronouns were used for me. I really didn’t care. Oh, the utter privilege of not having to care about an issue that does not affect me.

Rachel Laser: Members of Congress whipping votes in the House of Representatives to condemn the sermon, suggesting that, theologically, they know “biblical teaching” better than the bishop.

One of the reasons our country’s founders separated church and state was to prevent such abuses of power.

Mary Dyer: I encourage churches to learn how to remove the silent asterisks from their “All are Welcome” signs and truly invite people with hearing loss into their worship spaces so they can connect with others in the faith community.

As a person with a significant disability, I was intrigued by the subject matter of the article “DEI in the Church,” published by Good Faith Media on January 17. My interest largely stemmed from the fact that, for at least two reasons, I have not been welcomed and included in churches.

Helle Liht: Here’s the thing about shortcuts: they often lead to dead ends. Sure, you can fake it for a while, but true wisdom—the kind God offers—requires patience, dedication, humility and love.

Adam and Eve failed to distinguish between the two routes because the ultimate goal—God-likeness—appeared to be the same. Serpent did not change the goal but only the means of achieving it. Adam and Eve chose the serpent’s path. And they did indeed become knowledgeable.

Starlette Thomas: Trump might be rich in status, but based on courtroom testimonies, he is morally bankrupt.

Those who voted for him seemingly have no interest in the disparity—moral, social or otherwise. Still, there are lessons to be learned as his administration tries to put a freeze on federal funding of what some consider “progressive initiatives.”

“Success is not a name for God,” Martin Buber said. Before him, Jesus shared a parable about the idol of wealth, paralleling the lives of an unnamed rich man and Lazarus. The contrasting lives of the two men have been framed for millennia but have American Christians failed to see the lesson in ...

Annē Linn: I did not have a chance to articulate how my work meets Secretary Rubio’s goals and on Friday, he sent a new memo adding to the original executive order. Now, all aid would be halted for a 90-day review. Stop-work orders would be issued to all projects immediately, with almost no exceptions, despite the obvious life-saving nature of our work. That’s where my layoff came to be.

As a Christian, I was compelled by the gospel, the words of Jesus, to use my life to try to diminish suffering for the world’s most vulnerable. This has been more than a career—it has been a vocation where my greatest gifts have met the world’s greatest need. I have had no radical agenda other...

David Wheeler: In a climate of increasingly diverse ethnic, religious and personal identities and values, the MAGA movement appeals to a golden age that never was, and many of its leaders use this appeal to mask old-fashioned self-interest.

In a time of full employment, “they” are taking our jobs. In the wake of thirty years of decline in violent crime nationally and statistics showing that immigrants, regardless of legal status, are less likely to commit crimes than native-born Americans, “they” are dangerous criminals, murder...

Mitch Randall: After a flurry of controversial cabinet appointments and executive orders, the familiar feeling of chaos associated with Trump has already set into my soul.

However, after eight years of experiencing Trump’s turmoil, I am well prepared to endure and thrive over the next four years.

After eight years of experiencing Trump’s turmoil, I am well prepared to endure and thrive over the next four years.
