Overall, I enjoyed "Leave Me Alone, I'm Reading: Finding and Losing Myself in Books" by Maureen Corrigan (how could I not, with that title?), save for two issues. 1) She seems under the impression that her family (she's Catholic, her husband is Jewish, their daughter is from China) is wildly "exotic" and a topic of intense fascination for all who lay eyes on them. Does she not know how extremely common they are? And 2) She goes on and on about how reading books has made her an empathetic, open-minded, and accepting person. Unless someone disagrees with her. At which point they are evil and/or stupid. A great book about books, albeit with a less than self-aware narrator.

In this delightful memoir, the book critic for NPR’s Fresh Air reflects on her life as a professional reader. Maureen Corrigan takes us from her unpretentious girlhood in working-class Queens, to...

I was enjoying "Androids, Humanoids, and Other Folklore Monsters: Science and Soul in Science Fiction Films." As a cultural anthropologist, author Per Schelde made the connection between the tropes and roles folklore played in the past, and science fiction films today. This was a fresh and fascinating approach. Eventually, however, I couldn't look past the factual mistakes, such as confusing the parts played by Natalie Wood and Louise Fletcher in "Brainstorm," which completely reversed his interpretation, and his bizarre assertion that, like "Robocop," NYC had turned over its public school system to "corporations." But what really soured me was that, by the end, I got the feeling that he either just didn't like sci-fi movies in general, or was particularly furious that sci-fi movies showed dystopian futures and, in his words, made viewers more accepting of their inevitability instead of urging them to rise up in revolution. Which is an awful lot to ask of any movie.

Science fiction films, from the original Frankenstein and The Fly to Blade Runner and The Terminator, traditionally have been filled with aliens, spaceships,...

A huge thank you to Shelly Sanders for her very kind blurb:

Go On Pretending is a sweeping historical saga bridging three countries and three generations of indomitable women who take enormous risks in support of artistic freedom, racial equality, free speech and, most of all, the right to love without prejudice. An intense and enthralling read.

Update on my Lynley series reading: I skipped three books ahead after (spoiler redacted) died, hoping to miss the bulk of his inevitable chest-beating and moping (not that I don't think one should mourn a death, but I knew he'd do it in the most annoying way possible), and.... he'd found another woman to pine over! This one was only having s*x with him, but refusing to commit to a lifetime together! At first, I thought he just had bad taste in women, then I thought he only wanted unavailable women, now I have come to the conclusion that he's just dumb!

Just got the final interior proof for my May 2025 release. Every time I read a new version, I find something I want to change. So here's the solution: Not going to read it anymore. Assume it is brilliant as is.

For the first half dozen books in the series, Inspector Lynley pined after Deborah, the woman married to his best friend. Then, for the next dozen books, he pined over Helen, the woman who friend-zoned him. Then he and Helen finally got married. And then she died. So he moped. In the meantime, his underlings, Barbara, is pining for her next door neighbor, father of a child who started off amusing but then quickly became grating, and Winston, pining for a woman he met on the job. Does author Elizabeth George think we are here for the pining? Her actual mysteries are very good. But could we, maybe, cut the pining? It would make them shorter, too.

Elizabeth George's Inspector Lynley book series in order, with the latest releases, covers, descriptions and availability.

If you're looking for something fresh, check out "The Family Experiment" by John Marrs. In a dystopian future, families complete in a reality show about who is the better parent to a virtual child. Good character development, a quick moving plot, and fun twists and turns make this an enjoyable read. BUT, if you are looking for something with emotional impact, you will have to first buy into the conceit that a virtual child who ages two years every month so that they turn 18 in the span of a television season is "real" and their loss a death, rather than the turning off of a light switch.

From the acclaimed author of The One and The Marriage Act, The Family Experiment is a dark and brilliant speculative thriller about families: real and virtual. Some families are virtually perfect… The world's population is soaring, creating overcrowded cities and an economic cri

I realize I've had over 15 years to program the Twitter algorithm to primarily give me the education and fiction writing content I'm interested in, but WHAT did I do to make Threads think I want to constantly be in the middle of people gate-keeping who really has what condition and screaming about whether self-diagnosis is just as good as professional medical diagnosis and anyone who disagrees is ableist and classist? It has... not been a pleasant experience so far.

This is for all my fellow NYC parents. An excerpt from my Work in Progress entitled "Admit None: An NYC Schools Mystery"....

This was why savvy NYC moms timed their pregnancies accordingly. If you were certain you wanted private school exclusively, a birthday in September or October was best. If you were considering taking a shot at Hunter College Elementary School, a tuition-free lab school which only accepted 50 out of 5000 applicants based on IQ tests, or one of the public, citywide Gifted and Talented programs, then you should be aiming for January. Because the city schools set December 31st as their birthday cut-off, your January baby would be the oldest, strongest and, presumably, the smartest in the public school pool, while smack in the middle and still in contention for private schools. They’d all read their Malcolm Gladwell. They knew which months produced the most successful people.
