My son Oliver just said congratulations, and I asked for what. He reminded me that 35 years ago today, I got sober. Damn! Then he pointed out that had I not gotten sober, he would have never existed, nor would his siblings Hanna and Lukas. That moment is certainly one of the prized moments in my sober life. This self-portrait is pre-sobriety. I had to be drunk all the time to think it would be a good idea to attempt to have a beard!

I know most will never make it through 6:34 BUT I’m proud of my new reel. In fact, the reason it is so long is because we work with such a wide spectrum of humanity. Whether we are working with gangsters or artists our intentions are to give everyone a platform to share their authentic stories. I think we do a pretty good job… if you have 6:34 you can judge for yourself.

Dr Bill Morgan was chosen to establish the first chiropractic clinic at the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland, which later became Walter Reed National Military Medical Center. He is now President of Parker University and understands the connection and positive impact chiropractic care has on our military servicemen and women. Our Backbone crew visited Dr Morgan at Parker University where he sat down with Roger Sparks to discuss the importance of veterans living a chiropractic lifestyle.

Jennifer Steward facilitates a student rotation at Palmer College that enables students to work a rotation with Palmer’s Department of Defense/Veteran’s Affair’s (DoD/VA). This gives students opportunities to serve our nation’s military members and veterans while gaining valuable clinical experience in a multi-disciplinary environment. It's just one of the ways our veterans benefit from chiropractic programs.

Dr Barry McAlpine is a Vietnam Vet and a three-time Purple Heart recipient. He is also a chiropractor and a Palmer College of Chiropractic alumni and former board member. Barry is just one of many veterans who have chosen careers in chiropractic care. We've seen a pattern of service to others that links both the military and chiropractors.

Truth IS more amazing than fiction. James "Sneaky" Whiter was a decorated helicopter pilot Vietnam Vet who spent almost four decades in prison for murdering his wife's violent ex-husband in self defense. Our good friend Shad Meshad, of the NVF and others fought for his release. While in prison, Sneaky began numerous charitable programs- one of which was responsible for getting 1500 inmates their college degrees. He was released in January 2020 and has shared his story for our Backbone series.

We are so fortunate to meet amazing people in our travels for our documentaries. One is Dr Michael Longyear. Dr. Longyear was paralyzed as a teenager due to a football injury. Through intensive rehab and force of will he regained his ability to walk. He now is a Chiropractic Functional Neurology Clinician for the Functional Neurology Center at Life University.

Dr Shane Ott is one of many Veterans- in his case a Marine- who has become a chiropractor- and he works at a military base in San Diego with active military personnel. Shane comes from a military family and there are 8 chiropractors in his family as well!

Roger Sparks is a Silver Star recipient and former PJ- Pararescueman. His job was to jump into the worst day of anyone's life and provide life saving medical care, whether it be in battle or a plane crash in the Alaska wilderness.
