January 5th - on this day in 1969, the Soviet Union launched the Venera 5 mission from Gagarin's Start at Baikonur, using a Molniya-M / Blok-VL rocket.

The 1,130 kg space craft, also named 2V (V-69) No. 330, reached our inner neighboring planet, Venus, on May 16th, 1969, deploying its atmospheric probe at a distance of 37,000 km.

After deploying its parachute, Venera 5 send data for 53 minutes under the extermely harsh atmopsheric conditions of Venus. It confirmed the high temperatures, pressures, and carbon dioxide composition of the planet's atmosphere found by Venera 4.
