PROBLEM #1: Low Industry Wages

CAUSES OF PROBLEM:
-Renting buildings in high-cost areas
-High executive level salaries
-Mainly female workforce

OUR SOLUTIONS: Employees of 100 Cents Press work remote full-time. This cuts costs from building rent, which is an unnecessary expense (as COVID-19 has shown us). Most employees in publishing currently work remote and remain able to complete their job duties.

At 100 Cents Press, CEO and executive level salaries will not be disproportionately higher than the salaries of editorial, marketing, production, design, and administrative staff.

When fully operational, 100 Cents Press ensures that salaries will never drop under the emotional satiation point, which is estimated to be at $60,000 in 2020. Its highest salaries will never exceed the life evaluation satiation point, which is estimated to be at $105,000 in 2020.

Salary increases will be commensurate with duration of employment, not subjective and discriminatory job experience levels. As we've seen, hierarchical levels allow large publishers to overpay executives and underpay mid-level and senior positions in the editorial, design, and production departments.

We agree 100 percent.

How about we cut executive level salaries WAY down, and pay the people who actually produce the books?

“At every turn, purportedly liberal and elite sectors maintain racial custom and tradition in their hiring until they are publicly shamed or otherwise coerced into widening access to people of color.”

—Pamela Newkirk, Diversity, Inc.: The Failed Promise of a Billion-Dollar Business

We agree!

So let's redesign the publishing industry.

"A white, male freelance creative director in New York with 28 years of experience reported a salary of $300,000. A Latino man with the same job description in New Jersey and 25 years of experience said he made $95,000."

Book editors don’t just publish books.

Sometimes they publish their salaries online so we can all see how the book industry has been taking advantage of its employees.

It’s time for change.

We need our ducks in a row before we can begin our first round of investor funding.

And we need more followers!

That’s right—we’re just gonna ask you. Shamelessly. So blunt. Please LIKE and FOLLOW us if you haven’t already.

You see, the question every prospective investor asks is, “How many followers do you have?”

We want to answer, “Dude, TONS.”

So they’ll say, “Nice. We’ll think about it.”

And that’s venture capitalism👌 A bit quacky.

SHARE our page with your favorite ducklings, and stay tuned for our official book launch at the end of the month.

Happy reading!

Did you hear the rumor? Authors don’t make enough money for their published books. It’s true. Even writers who sign with major houses are given low royalty rates and mediocre advances—and the pay is even worse for authors of color.

No company should perpetuate systemic injustice. What’s your experience with the publishing industry? Let’s bring these issues to the front page.

Follow 100 Cents Press, a fair practice publisher, and join the discussion.

Author L.L. McKinney created the hashtag, where black and white authors are comparing their book advances. "You can now use this to fight for what you are worth," she says.
