December 9, 2024: Coming on the heels of Kamala Harris’ “Our fight is not over yet” post-defeat comment, Donald Trump’s “I will treat you every bit as good as I treat my supporters” post-victory message to her supporters gave him the Round One in the still-volatile aftermath of the presidential race.

But make no mistake, losers sounding bitter and winners sounding patronizing is not uncommon, especially in politics. Yet comparisons are being drawn, and they are mostly in the president-elect’s favour at the moment.

The Thai Foreign Ministry has instructed Thai nationals to avoid unnecessary travel to Syria, due to the uncertain political situation following the toppling of President Bashar Assad’s government by opposition rebels on December 8.

The Thai Embassy in Tehran, Iran, which also covers Syria, reported that it has contacted 23 Thai nationals in Syria since the political chaos began last week.

All 23 Thais are currently safe and the embassy is prepared to facilitate their evacuation if needed.

Of the 23, 22 reside in the capital city of Damascus, while one lives in Daraa, near the border with Jordan. They include masseurs, students and those married to Syrians.

The Thai Embassy in Iran will closely monitor the situation, maintain communication with Thai nationals in Syria and provide assistance as necessary.

It has urged those in Syria to stay up to date on the situation through all available channels and to avoid travel within the country.

A Thai nationalist group, led by former right-wing protest leaders Sondhi Limthongkul and Panthep Puapongpan, called on the government today to scrap MoU 44 between Thailand and Cambodia, and a related joint communique signed by then prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra and his Cambodian counterpart Hun Sen, within 15 days or they will stage street protests.

A protest note, addressed to Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra, was submitted to the Complaint Centre at Government House today.

Similar protest notes were also sent to parliament and the Foreign Ministry.

Sondhi, now an executive at Manager Group, said he will give the government 15 days to respond to their demand for the cancellation of the two documents, failing that he and his allies will take to the streets to protest.

Thailand’s private sector has voiced strong objection to the government’s plan to increase the minimum wage for all workers throughout the country to 400 baht, warning that the a national standard minimum wage will impact all businesses and may result in mass layoffs or closures of businesses.

Sanan Angubolkul, chairman of the Joint Standing Committee on Commerce, Industry and Banking, said today that the minimum wage should reflect the economic reality in each province, so the Tri-partite Wage Committee should heed the recommendations of the wage subcommittees in each province.

Berlin, Germany - Thousands of jubilant Syrians rallied in Berlin and cities across Europe on Sunday, waving flags and barely able to contain their joy at the downfall of president Bashar al-Assad.

"Finally we are free!" exclaimed Bassam Al-Hamada, 39, among 5,000 people at an exuberant rally in the capital of Germany, where the one million-plus Syrians makes it the largest diaspora in Europe.

The nation will mark Constitution Day on Tuesday (December 10) amid a continued effort to replace the current junta-drafted charter with a new supreme law that proponents argue will restore Thailand’s democratic foundations.

However, major hurdles and differences must still be overcome before a new constitution drafting assembly can begin its work.

Contentious issues dividing MPs and senators include whether two or three referendums are required before rewriting the 2017 charter and whether a “double majority” is needed to trigger the process.

Never underestimate the power of political mockery. If applied properly, it can be deadly, a lot more effective than straightforward criticism.

Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra has attracted both playful and serious contempt in no small measure. She is Thailand’s post-election Kamala Harris. She is threatening to overtake her aunt Yingluck Shinawatra in term of regular mockery, because a major difference is that Paetongtarn is facing it left and right, literally and ideologically.
