At the train platform of the Skopje Transportation Centre in North Macedonia, there is a row of KC190, type KF, kiosks used as ticket vending points and staff offices.

The complex was designed by Japanese architect Kenzo Tange as part of a broader brutalist approach to the city's reconstruction plan following the 1963 Skopje earthquake.

What happens to these modular kiosks once they are removed from the urban grid? This used to be a popular K67 Bar Slavček in Novo Mesto, Slovenia. After it closed down, it was relocated to the premises of the Grm Castle, where it awaits renovation.

What are your personal memories of these kiosks?

From the 1970s to the 1990s, mass-produced kiosks sprouted up across Eastern Europe, but like phone booths, many have gone out of use or vanished over the years.

Mass-produced from the 1970s to the 1990s, modular kiosks like the seminal K67 served as Polish zapiekanka joints, farm egg and rotisserie chicken vendors, funeral flower shops, newsstands, car park booths, currency exchange offices, and much more.

Studio Zupagrafika, czyli Martyna Sobecka i David Navarro od lat publikują tak efektowne wizualnie, jak dopracowane treściowo książki o późnomodernistycznej i brutalistycznej architekturze krajów dawnego Bloku Wschodniego. Nam opowiadają o źródłach tej fascynacji.

Our new photobook 'Kiosk' features modular kiosks like the seminal K67, designed by the Slovenian architect Saša J. Mächtig, and similar systems – including the Macedonian KC190, the Soviet 'Bathyscaphe', and the Polish Kami, such as this one in 'Manhattan' estate in Łódź, which sadly disappeared recently.
