Originally founded by Oblates of Mary Immaculate missionary Gerard Mongeau, who became the first bishop of Cotabato, as part of the congregation’s mission in Mindanao, The Mindanao Cross first hit the streets of Cotabato

on February 6, 1948, with the help of a printing press that was donated to the Oblates. Over the years, The Mindanao Cross has turned to be a standard bearer of news for the whole of Cotabato, pioneering in peace reporting and advocating for Muslim-Christian solidarity, and the preservation of the cultures and traditions of Moro, indigenous people, and Christian communities in the country’s south. The Mindanao Cross has been a consistent recipient of various awards from the Philippine Press Institute, the national association of newspapers, whose principal mandate is to defend press freedom and promote ethical standards for the professional development of the Filipino journalist. It was first awarded the Best in Editorial Page by PPI in 1998. It took home the 1999 Gerry Gil Foundation’s Best Editorial Page and again won in the 2006 Community Press Awards also in the Best Editorial Page category. It was also awarded the 1998 Best Edited Paper Weekly. The Mindanao Cross was again awarded Best in Editorial Page (weekly division) in 2011. In its citation, the PPI said The Mindanao Cross “has shown its relevance in its strength. It covers issues close to the hearts of its readers and to a large extent close to home. It goes beyond being an information provider as it gives context to these issues. The Mindanao Cross deals with national issues, from the perspective of the local community i.e., how it is important to their readers. It covers big national issues and relates it to the lives of its readers.”

In 2012, The Mindanao Cross was awarded Best Edited Newspaper, and it was 2013’s Best in Culture, Arts and History Reporting in the 18th season of the PPI’S Civic Journalism Community Press Awards (CJPA)“for equal space allocated to local arts, culture and history reporting amidst the surge of national and local issues; for connecting arts, culture and history, whenever possible to a people’s faith in God and in themselves; and for instilling in the minds of the readers awareness and appreciation for the country’s diverse culture and rich heritage through articles that showcase the Filipino’s creativity.”
