OPINION | The Cost of Friendship: Revealing the Vulture in Owl’s Feathers

Friendship - a word we toss around ever so casually yet can carry the weight of the world. To many, it is an inviolable bond, something many pride and hold dear. Consider the owl, an emblem of wisdom and guardianship, something we can look up to. We often see our closest friends in this light, trusting them by heart and soul. But what if, concealed deeply beneath the owl's wise facade, lies a sneaky vulture eager for its next, unsuspecting prey?

This analogy aptly represents the recent controversy hovering over Vice President Sara Duterte's children's book, “Isang Kaibigan,” and the concern over its hefty budget. The book, launched last November 2023, was put in the spotlight of public attention during a Senate budget hearing on August 20. Senator Risa Hontiveros probed the proposal to allocate a P10 million budget for the book’s production and distribution in the proposed 2025 budget, arguing that such a sum is overpriced for a mere children’s book, considering other larger needs through which the money can be allocated. VP Duterte fired back, accusing Hontiveros of having a political axe to grind, especially given her negative history with Duterte's allies. She defended the book, asserting her means to support children’s development, while also decrying the alleged chatter among lawmakers to impeach her, claiming efforts to malign the Duterte name.

Beyond budget, the book has also been hit with allegations of plagiarism, with critics noting similarities to an American novel, "Owly: Just a Little Blue," which also features an owl and explores themes of friendship, a claim the Office of the Vice President (OVP) has staunchly denied, asserting the book’s originality and copyright registration dating to last year.

But all these swirls of controversies with the book all wind up to one question: What does this whole debacle over a simple children’s book reveal about the state of our public resources and how we allocate them? At the core of this controversy is a question of priorities. Why give a substantial sum for one book when there exist more pressing issues deserving of such an amount? It should be noted that this book was made during VP Duterte’s tenure as education secretary, one marred by plights in classroom and equipment shortages, and reading comprehension at a significant low, among others. These hard-hitting issues, which directly impact the quality of education, deserve more funding than producing a single book. If the goal is to instill good character and lessons in students, we should turn our efforts toward addressing problems that are plaguing our education system as a whole.

Moreover, the analogy of a vulture in an owl’s feathers tells us that what seems harmless to the unaided eye, in reality, can lie a sinister, calculated move to etch in stone the Duterte name in the minds of future generations. When public officials use state resources to produce materials featuring their names and likenesses, we must question whether this crosses the line from public service to self-promotion and beautification, often done with an eye toward future elections. The challenge now lies in discerning the true nature of these actions, which requires us to scrutinize decisions made on our behalf with greater clarity.

In the end, “Isang Kaibigan” is not just about friendship as the name entails; it is also about how we allocate our public resources. With P10 million at stake, we must question whether fiscal priorities are correctly placed, especially when such an amount is directed toward one book whilst we continue to grapple with a dearth of classrooms, materials, and basic resources. While the book may claim to impart good character, we still need to remind officials how this money, drawn largely from the people, could have been better used to treat more profound issues at large. It reminds us to look beyond what the outside tells us and scrutinize the inside, assessing whether public initiatives truly serve the greater good or are part of a greater political stratagem.

The onus now lies with us to hold our leaders accountable and to ensure that the resources that we pay as taxpayers are used to benefit everyone, not just a select few.

NEWS | ‘Muir Wolves Den’ fair encourages student involvement with fresh club opportunities

New packs formed at Muir Woods Academy, Inc. (MWAI) as students roamed the ‘Muir Wolves Den: Discover Your Pack’ club fair at the Amazing Grace Gymnasium, hunting for organizations that match their interests and passions, Aug. 16.

Spearheaded by Ralph D. Lagrio, assistant principal for student affairs, and the Supreme Secondary Learners' Government (SSLG), the event showcased various clubs through presentations and expos aimed at recruiting new members.

Moreover, the fair, seeking to support students' passions and inclinations, offered students a platform to explore and join existing organizations, such as Vox Scholaris, Arts Guild, Basketball and Volleyball clubs, MWAI SERVs, while also introducing new student-led clubs, including the Librius Societas, Badminton club and Every Nation Campus: Victory Youth Worship.

Each club set up booths with interactive activities, complemented by breakout sessions scheduled throughout the day, enabling clubs to connect with potential members through discussions and demonstrations.

With new opportunities offered, the school hopes that by participating in these activities, students will become more engaged in campus life, fostering personal growth and a stronger sense of belonging within MWAI.

LOOK | MWAI Grade 10 students partake in NCAE

Grade 10 students of Muir Woods Academy, Inc. (MWAI) participated in the National Career Assessment Examinations, August 12-13.

In accordance with DepEd Memorandum No. 31, s. 2024, the two-day examinations are geared toward offering students guidance for their future educational careers and paths.

The assessments, administered by teacher-proctors from Bonfal National High School, cover General Scholastic Aptitude (GSA), Academic Track, and Occupational Interest Inventory (OII).

Maligayang Buwan ng Wikang Pambansa! ✨🇵🇭

Ngayong buwan ng Agosto, binibigyang-diin natin ang kahalagahan ng wikang Filipino bilang pangunahing instrumentong nag-uugnay sa bawat Pilipino. Nagbibigay daan ito sa mas malalim na pagkakaunawaan at pagmamahal sa ating bansa.

Inilahad sa Proklamasyon Blg. 1041, s. 1997 ang paggunita ng Buwan ng Wikang Pambansa tuwing ika-1 hanggang ika-31 ng Agosto. Ipinatupad ito ng dating Pangulong Fidel V. Ramos at pinapangunahan naman ng ahensiyang Komisyon sa Wikang Filipino.

Ang makapangyarihang taglay ng wikang Filipino ay nagpapalakas ng ating tinig sa mga isyung pumipigil sa ating pag-unlad tulad ng kamangmangan, kahirapan, at kakulangan sa kalayaan sa pagpapahayag.

Sa pagpapahalaga at pagtangkilik ng ating sariling wika, ipinapakita natin ang ating determinasyong magtagumpay laban sa mga balakid sa buhay.

Lagi nating isasaisip na sa bawat pangungusap, sa bawat parirala, ang bawat salitang ibinibitaw natin ay kolektibong nagbubuo ng mas mapagpalayang kinabukasan.

Sa huli, ang wikang Filipino ang siyang magpapalaya sa atin sa mga tanikalang pumipigil sa ating progreso upang maisakatuparan ang bansang inaasam at inaasahan ng lahat.

SPORTS | Carlos Yulo soars to second gold at 2024 Paris Olympics

Just 24 hours after claiming victory in the floor exercise event, Carlos Yulo made history again for the Philippines by capturing his second gold medal in the vault finals of men’s gymnastics at the 2024 Paris Olympics, August 4.

Yulo's stellar performance earned him a score of 15.433 on his first vault and a solid 14.800 on his second, resulting in an impressive average of 15.116, which propelled him ahead of the competition.

Armenia’s Artur Davtyan, who secured the silver medal with a score of 14.966, was the final gymnast to compete and the only athlete who could potentially surpass Yulo.

Despite delivering two clean vaults, Davtyan ultimately fell short, as Yulo’s strategic decision to attempt the high-difficulty 6.000 routine proved decisive, allowing him to secure the win.

Yulo's second gold medal marks the crowning achievement of his redemption tour following his performance at the Tokyo Olympics.

With two gold medals, Yulo stands as one of the most successful Filipino gymnasts in Olympic history, bringing home two gold medals for the Philippines for the first time.

SPORTS | Yulo triumphs with historic gold for Philippines at 2024 Paris Olympics

Carlos Edriel Yulo delivered an exceptional performance to win the men’s floor exercise championship at the 2024 Paris Olympics on Saturday, August 3.

Yulo’s victory earned the Philippines its first-ever medal in gymnastics, making him the second Filipino athlete to capture a gold medal, following Hidilyn Diaz.

Yulo scored 15.000 after landing his signature three-and-a-half twist dismount, capping his routine with a triumphant roar and surpassing the defending champion Artem Dolgopyat of Israel, who scored 14.966.

The 24-year-old gymnast broke down in tears after achieving the same gold medal feat as fellow Filipino athlete Hidilyn Diaz, who won her medal in Tokyo.

NEWS | MATATAG Curriculum and home-school partnership highlighted in Year-Start Parent Orientations

NUEVA VIZCAYA, Philippines – Emphasizing the rollout of the MATATAG Curriculum and strengthening home-school partnerships for the school year 2024-2025, Muir Woods Academy, Inc. (MWAI) held its annual Beginning-of-School-Year Parent Orientation at the Amazing Grace Gymnasium, with parent-attendees from grades 7 to 12, July 25.

While the orientation covered essential discussions on school policies and key upcoming events, it primarily focused on implementing the MATATAG Curriculum, which includes changes in the time allotment of subjects, emphasis on foundational skills, a decongested curriculum, and clearer alignment with 21st Century skills.

Moreover, as the new curriculum is phased in, the importance of home-school collaboration was emphasized to support learners in adapting to these academic changes.

In her opening remarks, Margaret Kaitlin S. McRae-Daniel, high school principal, emphasized the importance of community and collaboration at MWAI, underscoring the school’s commitment to forging a supportive environment for all students.

Subsequently, she also discussed the school’s plans for the upcoming academic year focusing on offering students more opportunities for personal and academic growth.

Additionally, Kumon Connect was reintroduced to the parents with the aim of helping students bridge gaps in mathematics and reading, and to provide an additional learning experience.

Furthermore, key policies from the student handbook, grading system, and Education Service Contracting (ESC) Voucher Programs were also discussed, along with introductions of teachers, staff, and non-teaching personnel.

“The orientation allowed me to prepare myself and my child to begin the school year better because we are again updated about the things we need to know that were different from last year,” said Lorna Batarao, a parent of an incoming grade 12 student.

Through its focus on parent involvement and thorough updates on academic and operational changes, MWAI continues to create a foundation for an enriching and collaborative school year, preparing students and parents for a successful and engaging start to the new academic term.

NEWS | MWAI ushers in SY ‘24-’25 with Year-Start Orientations

NUEVA VIZCAYA, Philippines — Amid inclement weather, Muir Woods Academy, Inc. (MWAI) kicked off the new school year with Beginning-of-School-Year Orientations at the Amazing Grace Gymnasium, July 24 and 25.

The orientation aimed to familiarize students with the new MATATAG curriculum changes, a calendar of major activities, and a discussion on key details of the student handbook prior to the formal start of classes on Monday, July 29.

“These orientations are crucial for setting the tone for the entire school year. We want our students to feel informed, prepared, and excited about the year ahead,” Assistant Principal for Academic Affairs Catherine Capistrano said.

Subsequently, High School Principal Margaret Kaitlin S. McRae-Daniel led discussions on the school’s profile and Philosophy, Vision, Mission, and Goals (PVMGO), while introductions of faculty and administration ensued afterwards.

Key features of the MATATAG curriculum, including new subject time allotments and grading systems, were also explained, followed by a brief rundown of the scheduled programs and activities for the rest of the school year.

Additionally, major educational enhancements were spotlighted, such as the updated science curriculum, upgraded library facilities, new lab equipment, improved parking lighting, and expanded sports equipment.

Students also participated in a series of icebreakers and breakout sessions, allowing them to connect with classmates and foster a sense of community and support.

These activities included collaborative group games and peer networking sessions to encourage student-attendees’ involvement and participation in the program.

“The orientation was a lot of fun! It was packed with essential information, and we were actively involved throughout the program, making me listen attentively and engage with activities” Arden Moya, a Grade 12 student said.

Furthermore, students were briefed on the Education Service Contract (ESC) Program and Senior High School (SHS) Voucher Program to ensure they fully leverage available educational opportunities.

Post-program, open forums and interactive dialogues with advisers gave students the opportunity to voice their opinions, ask questions, and provide feedback on school policies and programs.

By prioritizing student-centered activities, MWAI paves the way for a more interactive and inclusive environment, ensuring students are well-prepared and enthusiastic for the academic year ahead.

We're back at it again, Muir Wolves! ✨

And there we have it, Year 2 of 'Vox Talks' has officially launched and made its way to your screens! 📺

In this exciting first episode, we yield the mic and give the MWAI campus floor to every grade level of the Junior High School Department as we kick off the new school year with a fun and engaging student orientation.

Once again, we listen to the stories and experiences of the members of our dear Wolf Pack as they have just started to embark on the Academic Year 2024-2025. One thing is certain: this promising hunt will be a thrilling chase toward stronger bonds and growth.
