Teatro Publico (TP) is a community-based theater group founded with the aim of promoting community awareness regarding pertinent social issues and concerns using theater performances as a tool. Initially, TP was built as an avenue for its members, who at that time were students of a private university in Nueva Vizcaya, to stage productions that were deemed too radical and liberal by the policies o
f the university they were affiliated with. Teatro Publico had its first major production in 2010, staging the fund raising play “For Adults Only”, a three act play consisting of three stories tackling about gender equality, women’s rights, and that of the status quo of employment in the Philippines at that time. The production was staged at Ammungan Hall, Capitol Compound, Bayombong, Nueva Vizcaya.
“For Adults Only” was staged in cooperation with the Journalism students of Saint Mary’s University, the beneficiary of the said fund raising production. The profits from the ticket sales of the production were used by the beneficiaries as funding for a national documentary competition that they have been invited to participate in. The second major production of TP, “Kwentong Karinderya”, wasn’t staged until the year 2011. Aiming to provide their own flavor of theater production, TP included an original script entitled “Pakbet” as part of the three act play, a first in TP history. The production was staged at Del Millo’s, Solano, Nueva Vizcaya. The original script added a more authentic local flavor to the production, with the language used almost entirely in Iloco. TP staged another major production in 2014 as an answer to the need to raise money for a local boy’s medical expenses in 2014. The play, “Maskara: Maganda Ka Ba?” with the assistance of the Provincial Government of Nueva Vizcaya raised an amount of P 5000.00 from nothing while boldly staging three original short-plays in the one-hour production. In between these major productions, TP had been helping other school-based theater groups in the province through workshops, trainings, and written scripts. With the mission of continuing to educate the community about social issues and concern and promoting the theater arts, TP continuous to collaborate with other organizations and groups in Nueva Vizcaya.
