Journey Recollection:
June 16. Cycle to Immigration office. To extend my visa I will need to change $5 per day; that is $30 for 6 further days which is a lot. Cycle to the bank where I pick up an abandoned receipt for $15. We cycle to the airport to book tickets (J and I are heading for Chitwan National Park) and then back to the bank and change $15 also presenting the found receipt which they immediately confiscate. The bank closes but a man asks our names John says 'Bernstein' and I say'Hall' ..J's name! Then back to the Immigration Office to chance it but the bank has telephoned ahead about the receipt and they are waiting for us. So we have to cycle back to the bank where we are told off by the bank manager but he kindly allows me to change a further $15. Then back again to Immigration where we are told our visas will be ready in 2 hours ....but they will be for only 3 days.
We bike to the boat hire place and row out to a spring where lovely, half clad local women wash their clothes, we copy them and bash our wet, trek dirty clothes against the rocks. We row back, hire bikes again and cycle to Immigration by 5pm where we wait for half an hour. Finally, our visas arrive and to our delight they are for.... 7 days! Jubilant we return the bikes, walk back to Snowlands and then to the hut with our wet washing. Then to celebrate, it's back again to our favourite haunt, Snowlands, this time with two bottles of Night Rose wine.
We wander up to a nearby store to buy some bread and honey to eat outside. A drunken Hans arrives with an enormous fish and two young Nepali lads who he orders about: "Clean ze table!" He slaps down the fish and guts it ..ordering salt and complaining "I do all ze vork vile all ze udders vatch!" he's German, loud, big and tells us he's an ex-mountain trooper. "Fire, Fire!" The two Nepalis shield their eyes and try to hold the fish on sticks over the fire but, overcome with smoke, let them drop into the flames; Hans curses while an anxious shopkeeper complains about the fire being too close to his wooden shop. An Irish girl joins us, she has a lot to say, not much of it interesting, and, as we’ve all had a fair amount to drink, she doesn’t stay long. The fish is excellent. We leave Hans mumbling into his beer and stumble back along the track to our tiny hut past the brilliant fireflies and the hundreds of mysterious, chirping frogs. I tell young Sabitu, the daughter, we are leaving; I can hear J. round the back groaning as he voids his bowels over 'the horrendous effing pit'. We clean up the hut, settle our bill, and pack for leaving.
June 17. Last trip to our beloved Snowlands for breakfast. It’s a beautiful day and we walk on to the airport which we find is little more than a field. The flight costs only slightly more than the long bus ride would. When the plane arrives it’s really small; we’re given a complimentary boiled sweet as we board. Inside it's no bigger than a bus; it's going to be the first flight I've ever made in my life anywhere; to Nepal’s first national park, Chitwan, not that we know much about it other than it's jungle but we've heard about rare Bengal tigers, leopards, Indian one horned rhino, elephants and crocodile infested rivers.
We take off; it’s a bit shaky but the views over the puffy clouds to the snowy Himalayas are fantastic; extraordinary colours in the skies and sheer vertical shafts of bright light shooting up that can only be reflections off the snow or lakes. Right beneath us are tiny clusters of houses and villages settled amongst carefully terraced and cultivated, green hills. It’s only a 20 minute flight to Bharatpur, apparently, we have the big boss of the park on board with us. On landing, luckily, we get a lift in a truck saving us a good 7km walk, it's another very bumpy ride and it gets bumpier when we have to transfer to a tractor for the final part of the journey. We’re dropped off in the park and then walked to Wendy’s Student Lodge where a room is 4 Rupees a night.

**Explore the Historic Handigaun (Nara)** In an effort to improve urban environments by reducing vehicle emissions, Handigaun has been celebrating Car-Free Day every Saturday for nearly a year. As part of the master plan for Handigaun, to enhance the environment, vehicular entry is prohibited on the stretch of road from Dathu Tole Krishna Temple, through Dabali Chowk, to Kotaltole Bhavarkun. Vehicles are restricted from entering this area from 2 PM to 8 PM. Alternative routes through Dhobikhola Corridor and the inner roads from Gahana Pokhari to the ward office have been arranged for vehicles. Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) has already developed a restoration master plan and has discussed various aspects with stakeholders. This plan is not just for five years but includes medium-term and long-term strategies. Handigaun is considered one of the oldest places in terms of culture and heritage from the Pre-Lichhavi, Burma, and Lichhavi periods. Ancient settlements and temples from the Pre-Lichhavi era can be found in the Satyanarayan area here. Archaeological remains and other heritage buildings dating back to the 2nd century BCE are present only in this area. The goal of the master plan is to transform Handigaun to reflect its Lichhavi era history. The Car-Free Day and street festival are part of this initiative. Kathmandu Metropolitan City plans to continue this program, and everyone’s cooperation is needed to preserve such historic places. Great move by Balen, KMC, local authorities, and the people of Handigaun.
