Two protesting students died during a demonstration by Korean Language test candidates at Balkumari, Lalitpur on 29th Dec 2023 afternoon.

The unrest stems from the Korean government’s recent decision, barring those who previously took EPS examinations from applying for new vacancies in the manufacturing sectors, sparking discontent and demonstrations among EPS students at Balkumari, Lalitpur, Nepal.

Superintendent of Police Nawaraj Karki at Lalitpur Police Range said 23-year-old Sujan Raut was pronounced dead upon reaching KIST Medical College and Teaching Hospital.

Likewise, Nepal Police Spokesperson Kuber Kadayat said Birendra Shah, who was also injured during the protest, died while undergoing treatment.

Protesters set a vehicle Ba 2 Jha 5861 of Minister for Physical Infrastructure and Transport Prakash Jwala on fire, compelling both the Minister and protective service officers to evacuate the vehicle before it was set ablaze.

The Korean Language test candidates were staging demonstrations demanding that they be allowed to appear for language tests for jobs in the manufacturing sector in South Korea.

Those who failed the language proficiency test for shipbuilding jobs took to the streets demanding they be allowed to appear for language tests for the manufacturing sector.

Nepal's former national cricket team captain Sandeep Lamichhane was on Friday convicted by a court in Kathmandu for the r**e of a minor.
Earlier in January this year, Lamichhane was released by the court after being arrested over allegations from a 17-year-old girl, claiming the cricketer assaulted her in a hotel room in Kathmandu.
The 23-year-old Lamichhane stands as Nepal's most prominent cricketer and is the first-ever player from from the country to feature in the Indian Premier League (IPL).

Bangladesh clinched the U-19 Asia Cup title by defeating the UAE with a significant 195-run margin in the tournament’s final match.

The UAE, who had secured a berth in the final by defeating Pakistan, displayed an unworthy performance against Bangladesh today.

Falling short of the target of 283 runs, the UAE lost all their wickets in 24.5 overs, managing to score a mere 87 runs.

Only two UAE batters Dhruv Parasar and Akshat Rai managed to get two digit scores against Bangladesh’s bowlers. Parasar scored 25 runs, and Rai scored 11.

For Bangladesh, Maruf Mridha and Rohanat Borson took three wickets each, while Ikbal Hussain and Shik Jibon secured two wickets each.

Playing at home, the UAE won the toss, and chose to field letting Bangladesh score 282 runs with a loss of eight wickets. Opener Ashiqur Rahman Shibli struck a century for Bangladesh, scoring 129 runs, while Mohammad Rizwan Chaudhary contributed 60 runs, and Ariful Islam scored 50 runs.

Ayman Ahmed from UAE took four wickets against Bangladesh.

Bangladesh had entered the final after defeating India in the semifinals, while Nepal, despite participating in the competition, was eliminated in the group stage, losing to all three teams: India, Pakistan, and Afghanistan

The Nepal Rastra Bank (NRB) is said to allocate Rs 25 billion from its profit of the last fiscal year (FY) for the Government of Nepal. The board of directors of NRB approved the annual report, audited by external auditors for FY 2022/23.

It is mentioned in the annual report that the meeting of the board has decided to allocate the amount to be separated from the bank's net profit to various necessary funds and allocate the remaining surplus amount of Rs 25 billion to the Government of Nepal.

NRB, which earned a profit of Rs 87.60 billion in the last FY, will allocate the amount in various funds and transfer Rs 25 billion to the Government of Nepal.

In the FY 2022/23, the total net operating income of NRB increased by 86.57 percent compared to the previous year and reached at Rs 66.93 billion. In 2021/22 such income was 35.87 billion.

In the net operating income of the NRB, the share of net interest income is 93.49 percent, the income from foreign exchange purchase and sale is 3.63 percent and the share of other operating income is 2.88 percent. The net interest income increased by 86.09 percent compared to the previous year and has remained at Rs 62.57 billion. Income from buying and selling foreign exchange increased by 19.76 percent and remained at Rs 2.43 billion. Similarly, other income has been maintained at Rs 1.92 billion.

The net income before foreign exchange and other asset revaluation gain/loss adjustment for FY 2022/23 increased by 112.81 percent compared to the previous year, reaching Rs 60.48 billion. Such net income was Rs 28.43 billion in the FY 2021/22.

According to the Central Bank, the total profit has reached Rs 87.60 billion including the foreign exchange revaluation profit of Rs 10.90 billion and the revaluation profit of gold and silver has amounted to Rs 17.11 billion.

Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu are on high alert with severe storm, Cyclone Michaung, expected to make landfall today. Both states have been hit by heavy rains and thunderstorms in the last 24 hours. Five people died in rain-related incidents in Chennai. Two people died of electrocution while one was killed after a tree fell on him in the upmarket Besant Nagar area of the city, police said.
In Chennai, cars were swept away as floodwater flowed through the streets, while its airport, one of the busiest in India, shut operations until Tuesday morning.

A severe cyclonic storm has the potential to cause uprooting of small and medium trees, large-scale damage to hutments and mud houses, and partial damage to telephone and electric poles.

Malaysia based Axiata Group Bhd posted a RM797.4 million net loss for the third quarter ended Sep 30, 2023 (3Q2023) after booking a RM1 billion asset impairment from its plan to exit Nepal's Ncell Axiata Ltd (Ncell).

According to its filing with Bursa Malaysia Securities Bhd, the board of directors' of Axiata approved the group's intention to exit the Nepal mobile segment on Sep 29, 2023.

The meeting held on Monday between the Council of Ministers has decided to pay the sum of NPR 50000 (Each Family) for the construction of temporary settlement/residency. The amount will be paid in the two installments to the local level bodies through the Crisis Management Fund. Further the amount will be distributed to the affected families and to those families recommended by the ward in their respective bank accounts.

The Ministry of Urban Development will assist technically in the development of those residency through the local technical body.

The government of Nepal has decided to shut down Chinese origin app Tiktok. The decision was taken on Monday in the meeting held between the Council of Ministers. Government Spokesperson and Minister of Communication and Information Technology, Rekha Sharma informed about the decision to ban Tiktok in Nepal.

The decision for ban of TikTok was taken in account for disrupting social harmony in the country: she added.
According to Minister Sharma, the decision to ban TikTok will be implemented immediately.
“It might take some time to fully ban it, but the decision to ban TikTok has been taken. We are looking at how we can implement that effectively,” said Sharma.

A Manang Air helicopter crashed away this morning while flying to Lobuche from Rumjhatar at 7 13 a.m.
Raju Neupane, director, Manang Air, confirmed the crash of the helicopter with a 9-N NA callsign.
The helicopter was operating to rescue a passenger from a high-altitude area in Lobuche.
Pilot PK Sedhain was flying the helicopter, and he is reported to be safe.
Pilot Sedhai has been rescued by the Fishtail Helicopter from the accident site to Lukla.
The helicopter crashed while landing; the reasons are unknown, said an information officer of the Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal.

A group of 254 Nepali students rescued from the strife-torn Israel and led by Foreign Minister N. P. Saud arrived in Kathmandu on October 13.

A Nepal Airlines flight that took off from Israel's Ben Gurion International Airport on October 12 landed at Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu this morning after a stopover in Dubai.

Speaking to the media at the airport, Foreign Minister Saud, who flew to Israel a day before to facilitate the rescue mission, said the remaining Nepalis who have requested repatriation would be rescued soon.
