The Enugu State Government on Thursday unveiled the Enugu Youth Upscale project as part of the state youth development roadmap, aimed at creating platforms for reducing youth unemployment and developing the capacity of young men and women in the state.

The State Commissioner for Youth and Sports, Lloyd Ekweremadu made this known during a media chat with stakeholders and members of civil society organisations in Enugu.

According to him, the unveiling became necessary following the increase in youth restiveness and unemployment rate in the country, which has increased anti-social behaviour particularly among young Nigerians.

On sustainability of the programme, Ekweremadu said sustainability is very important, explaining that the programme is digitised and structured in a way that will outlive them,as data of the youths would be collected across the 17 local government areas of the state and is decentralised because we are digitising everything.

"The idea is to provide projects to the youths of Enugu that will see to their upskilling and upscaling and also bring their skill sets up to par with their counterparts in other climes which will enable our youths compete favourably and become employed whether in Enugu or outside Enugu"

"This project is for young people between the ages of 18 and 35, and it is open for partnership with the civil society organisations, non-governmental organisations, private businesses, international development institutions, among other notable stakeholders. We will partner with them to ensure that the objective of the ministry is achieved,” the Commissioner stressed.

Log onto "https://eyouthupscale.org" and register whatever programme that they're interested in, as It is going to have a state-wide spread to capture all the comparative advantages in the various local governments.”

Also speaking, the development consultant and lead coordinator of the Upscale Project, Mr. Emmanuel Etukudo highlighted the pillars of the programme, which include data collection, collaboration, training, knowledge transfer, and policy reform.

In his words, “We will train them and ensure they are equipped and rightly empowered to enable them establish with whatever skill they have learnt which will help to curb youth unemployment and also anti-social behaviours among our youths.”

Enugu Capital Authority Sets to clamp down on illegal structures/falsely acquired building plans.

Demolishes Illegal Structure at Restaurant,Citing Multiple illegalities.

1st March 2024
Mdfnews24.

The Enugu Capital Territory Development Authority, ECTDA, has demolished illegal structures at Breathe Restaurant & Lounge located at Independence Avenue at Independence Layout, Enugu, citing lack of title documents, fraudulent submission of Certificate of Occupancy (C-of-O), construction of more buildings than were approved, change of purpose of building permit without approval, among others.

The agency said it acted following the revocation of the withdrawal of building plan/permit in line with the powers conferred on it by the law, and based on item 11 of the affidavit sworn by the developer, Ndubuisi Madueke, in support of his application for building permit.

In the said item 11, the developer had sworn: “If at any point it is found that any information stated in my drawing is false, or that I deviate from the contents of the building drawing submitted to the authority containing my intended development plan, that this owner/builder permit is deemed invalid and automatically stand revoked.”

Recall that ECTDA had about a week ago raised the alarm over what it described as proliferation of fake title documents, forged building approvals, manipulation of permits, and illegal structures in parts of the Enugu metropolis, saying it had revoked several of the permits/approvals for such structures, as they posed a danger to human and environmental safety.

In a 16th February 2024 letter addressed to the proprietor of the restaurant with reference number ENS/ECTDA/ADM/376/VOL.1/27, entitled “Withdrawal of Approved Building Plan/Permit” supported by Building Permit number ECTDA/EPC/1380 approving the construction of one unit of one storey building for restaurant and one room self-contain bungalow for security house only as well as a C-of-O for Plot 31 Ekulu River Layout, GRA, Enugu, the Executive Chairman of ECTDA wrote: “ I hereby write to refer to the above subject matter for strict compliance of the Enugu Municipal Master Plan, and inform you that your approval for building construction issued by the agency with plan No. ECTDA/EPC/1380 DATED 2ND May 2023 has been withdrawn for the following reasons:

“i. Non-payment of necessary fees to the Government for Building Plan Approval/Permit.

“ii. Fraudulent submission of Certificate of Occupancy (C of O) of a property at Ekulu River Layout in GRA to obtain approval/permit for building of a property at Independence Layout.

“iv. Construction of five (5) building structures as against two (2) structures in the building plan.

“v. Change of purpose clause without approval.

“vi. Failure to abide/comply with all application laws, requirements, ordinances, building codes and zoning regulations, as contained in the Owner/Builder Permit Affidavit form signed and sworn in a competent court of law by your own very self (see item 7 of the copy attached).

“vii. Failure to notify the agency of any addition, deletions, or changes to any information that you provided on the affidavit disclosure (see item 10)”.

The ECTDA Chairman also cited item 11 of the sworn affidavit when the developer declared his Owner/Builder Plan Permit is “deemed invalid and automatically stand revoked” should he be found to have given false information or deviated from the building plans submitted in pursuit of the application.

Although the developer was alleged to have used a C-of-O for GRA to obtain the building permit, ECTDA, however, did not demolish the two permitted buildings (a one-storey building and a security house) in order to allow the developer to regularise the structures with proper application with the correct plot and zone.

The enabling Law which was enacted in 2020, was not activated, hence the Mbah administration initiated vital amendments to the Law in 2023 and also executed a Deed of Trust to pave the way for the appointment and inauguration of a Board of Trustees (BOT) to bring the Trust Fund into full force.

The 11-member Board of Trustees (BOT) of the Trust Fund chaired by Mr. Ike Chioke, an Investment Banker and Group Managing Director of Afrinvest Trustees Limited, while Mr. Chinedu Anih was appointed the Executive Secretary.with Brig.Gen.Murtala Abu,Garrison Commander 82 Div Nig.Army,State director of the DSS,Mrs Theresa Egbunu rep security agencies and Dame Ugochi Madueke, Commissioner for Culture amd Tourism, rep the state among others.

...As Management Calls for Arrest of Erring officers and open apology to the private owned station

*PRESS RELEASE*

The Invasion Of ABN TV/Radio Station By Police in Umuahia Alarming

We are worried by the invasion of our broadcast station in Umuahia by officers of the Nigerian Police, Umuahia Area command in Abia State.

At about 2:40pm on Tuesday, January 16, 2023, the policemen invaded our station during a live programme to arrest our guest, one Mr. Udensi Donald during a programme, Youth Rendezvous.

The police claimed a senior brother of the guest, one Mr Uche Onwuka Udensi had written a petition against him over a family matter.

Despite repeated plea by our staff to the officers to allow the programme come to an end before the guest could be arrested, they insisted whisking him away while the live programme was on.

We find this very provocative and indeed an act of overzealousness by the officers who obviously acted in clear contravention of rule of engagement.

It clearly also negates the enhanced police-civil relations which the Commissioner of Police, CP Kene Onwuemeile has consistently campaigned for.

When the Director of the media organization who was in Aba for an assignment was informed of the development, he quickly reached out to the Commissioner of Police who immediately invited staff of ABN TV/Radio to properly brief him on what happened, officers on duty barricaded the door and harassed, intimidated and threatened to detain them.

We also want to put on record, during the gestapo arrest, many of our broadcast equipment were fatally damaged, including a laptop, camera and microphones.

We find this an attack on press freedom and most especially open violation of human right to expression, having taken place during a live broadcast where critical issues about youth development were being discussed.

We demand an open apology from the Abia State Command of the Nigerian Police over this unprovoked attack in our studio.

It has equally left us with huge financial losses following the damage of our equipment. We are also calling for the replacement of the affected tools.

From all indications, the officers were not properly schooled on best approaches to relate with the civil populace in a democratic environment where the media plays a key role to enhance their relations with the generality of the society.

Ifeanyi Okali
Director ABN TV/Radio

Enugu State Governor, Dr. Peter Mbah, has lauded the Nigerian Armed Forces for their sacrifices and paying the supreme sacrifice by members of the armed forces, saying that his administration would continue to support them in their efforts to make the country safe.

Mbah, who assured that the sacrifices of the fallen heroes would not be in vain, however, urged Nigerians to eschew all expressions of hate and acts of violence and insecurity. He stressed that only by so doing would the country truly reciprocate the gallantry of the service-men and honour the memory of those who paid the supreme price in the service of the fatherland.

The governor gave the commendations and assurances at the laying of wreaths and parade at the Okpara square, Enugu, to conclude the series of events marking the 2024 Armed Forces Remembrance Day.

He said, "These selfless men and women whom we remember, and honor today gave their lives in operations ranging from the Nigerian Civil War and the numerous internal security operations across the country today to various peacekeeping operations in places as far as Chad, Somalia, Sudan, Liberia, Sierra Leone and many others.

"The sacrifices of these our dear departed defenders are most certainly not lost on us, and our only responsibility as the beneficiaries of their great labour of love can only be to ensure that their high price is ultimately not paid in vain.

"Consequently, we must constantly rededicate ourselves to the duty of maintaining peace and security across our great Nation, not only by eschewing all expressions of hate or acts of violence and insecurity, but also by supporting our brothers and sisters in the security agencies.

"In line with this, this administration will certainly continue to support the men and women of our security services in the state. en quote"

Mbah thanked members of the armed forces and security agencies for the relative peace and stability that now prevail in the state and enjoined them to continue to show utmost discipline and patriotism in the state.

The colourful event, which also witnessed the release of pigeons by the governor as a symbol of peace and love, was attended by heads of the other arms of government and the military formations in the state including the Speaker, Enugu State House of Assembly, Chief Judge of Enugu State, the General Officer Commanding 82 Division, Nigerian Army, Enugu who was represented by the Garrison Commander, Brigadier General Murtala Abu.

APC SouthEast Condemns Suspension / Arrest of Anambra and Abia Traditional Rulers

Says it’s an aberrational affront against Igbo traditional institutions.

Mdfnews24.
10th Jan. 2024.

Wants Ohanaeze Ndi-Igbo to wade in!

Reactions are still trailing the suspension of the paramount ruler of Neni Community, HRH Damian Onwuamaeze Ezeani by the Soludo administration for conferring a chieftaincy title on the Senator representing Anambra South and member of the All Progressives Congress, Senator Ifeanyi Ubah and the arrest of the favourite for the Arochukwu traditional stool in Abia State, Godwin Kanu Idei, over the false allegations of impersonation.

This time around, the SouthEast zone of the All Progressives Congress, APC have also waded into the matter in the two separate localities condemning the suspension and arrest whilst describing it as an aberrational affront against Igbo traditional institutions.

The zone decried the actions of the Abia and Anambra state Governments as an attempt to make Igbo crowns and stools an appendage of the APGA led government of Anambra state and the LP lead government in Abia state, respectively.

It called on the pan Igbo group, Ohanaeze NdiIgbo as well as prominent Igbos all over the country as well Nigerians; to rise up and condemn such acts as it very much undermined the tradition of NdiIgbo.

“We received with shock the recent suspension of an esteemed traditional ruler, HRH Damian Onwuamaeze Ezeani, the Igwe of Neni Community, at first we thought there was some untruth in the story until its confirmation.
This came coupled with the arrest and illegal detention of the acclaimed Eze Aro of Arochukwu Kindgom , Godwin Kanu Idei for impersonation even though Idei had been rightfully crowned as the Eze Aro by the traditional ruler of Ibom Isii, Eze Nwa Kanu.

It is indeed sad and is deserving of full condemnation such an aberrational affront against Igbo traditional institutions which we should cherish and nurture, rather than drag into the mud?

What is Igwe Neni’s offence? That he conferred a title on a Senator of APC extraction? Is he the first to have done so? Or is it merely politics, otherwise can we not see this as a move to make the prestigious crowns and stools in Anambra State as an appendage of the APGA led administration? What are the offences of the Eze Ibom Isii or Eze Idei that the Abia State Government under Alex Otti has to suspend the former and arrest the latter when they were just carrying out their duties as custodians of our tradition. It is obvious that Otti is trying to impose the other person, one Pastor Eberechukwu Oji who is unpopular with Ndi Arochukwu on the people.

We thus call on Igbos all over the world, and the leadership of the Pan Igbo organization, Ohanaeze NdiIgbo and other Igbo groups likewise well meaning Nigerians to call the administrations of Chukwuma Soludo and Alex Otti to order.

Will a Yoruba governor treat a first class traditional ruler in such manner or Fulani leader? The Eze Aro remains about the oldest traditional stool in Igbo land. It is highly revered and should not be desecrated by the governor in his political mix-up. The Aro kingdoms far predates the coming of the white man and colonial era. It’s not an autonomous community, created by any government. The statement read.

Methodist Bishop Opoko sues for peace among all in this Christmas season.

"Let's show the love of Christ to our world, that God will give us grace beyond measure."-Bishop Opoko.

Medfnews 24.
25th Dec.2023.

A CHRISTMAS MESSAGE BY HIS GRACE MOST REV'D (DR.) CHIBUZO RAPHAEL OPOKO, TFSG, DOB, JP), METHODIST ARCHBISHOP OF UMUAHIA.

Preamble:

For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given and the government shall be upon his shoulder and his name shall be called: wonderful, counselor, everlasting father and prince of peace (Isaiah 9:6).

It is indeed with great delight that I write to convey my warmest greetings to all and sundry for a successful year. It is indeed by the special grace of God that we are all alive. In this season of Christmas, it is important that we quickly reflect on the meaning and essence of Christmas, discuss Christmas and the present Nigerian situation and conclude with God's expectation from us as Christians.

Discussing the issues stated above, will in a great way justify the anchor scripture quoted above.

Meaning and essence of Christmas:

Christmas has its roots in the Christian faith and is celebrated as the birth of Jesus Christ. It is believed that Jesus was born in Bethlehem over 2,000 years ago.
The celebration of Christmas as the birth of Jesus Christ has its origins in the early Christian Church. The exact date of the first Christmas celebration is unclear, but it began to be widely observed in the 4th century. Pope Julius officially declared December 25th as the date of Christ's birth in the year 336 AD. Over time, Christmas traditions and customs evolved, incorporating elements from various cultures and festivities.
Christmas is a time to come together with family and loved ones, exchange gifts, and spread joy and goodwill. It's a celebration of love, hope, and the spirit of giving. It's a special time of year that brings warmth and happiness to our hearts.

Christmas holds great significance for many people around the world. It's a time to celebrate love, family, and togetherness. For Christians, it's a celebration of the birth of Jesus, who is the Son of God and a symbol of hope and salvation. It's a time to reflect on the values of kindness, generosity, and compassion. During Christmas, people exchange gifts as a way to show love and appreciation for one another reflecting on the life of Christ. It's also a time for acts of kindness, such as helping those in need and spreading joy to others.

Overall, Christmas is a special occasion that brings people closer, reminds us of the importance of love and giving, and fills our hearts with joy and warmth.

Therefore, outside Christ, Christmas is useless. Hence everybody who celebrates Christmas must first accept the Christ of the mas into his life to make his show of love valuable before God.

Christmas and our Present Nigerian Situation:
It is important to note that today in Nigeria, many people including some of our leaders, have made Christmas to loose it's value.
Today, when we talk of Christmas, we talk of increase in goods and services. We talk of high rate of crime and killings. During Christmas, we see all sorts of wickedness all in the bid to make money at all cost. We must note that when we do all these, we are sincerely abusing the essence of Christmas.
The present state of killings, kidnapping and banditry in our country calls for sincere prayers. The present price of fuel, rice, general transportation and cost of living makes it difficult for people in Nigeria to show love in a time like this. I therefore call on Christians to show love and eschew all form of violence as we celebrate Christ who is the Prince of Peace.

The expectation of God from Christians
Let me categorically state that the presence of darkness suggest the need for light in our society. We need Christians to awake and shine in a time like this. We need the church of God to become the salt of the earth and the light of the world. We need Christians to respond the earnest groaning of the creation for the manifestation of sons of God.

We need to set the pace for others to follow. To my beloved friends in the faith I ask, how many widows and orphans have you been able to reach out to this Christmas? How many children who are drop out have you been able to give scholarship? How many communities have you been able to reach out to with basic infrastructural facilities? It is indeed the time for us to arise and shine for darkness has covered the earth and gross darkness the people (Isaiah 60:1). Let me remind us that if we decide to be silent at this very critical time, God can still send help from another source.

My prayer for all:
It is my prayer that as we take up this challenge of showing the love of Christ to our world, that God will give us grace beyond measure. It is my prayer that in this season of insecurity that God will be our security. It is our prayer that the Lord Almighty will supply our needs according to His riches in glory.
May the joy of the Lord remain our strength now and forevermore.

Yours in His Vineyard,

Most Revd. Dr. Chibuzo Raphael Opoko, TFSG, DOB, JP.
