Court fines Multichoice N150m, free subscription to all Nigerians for contempt

ABUJA–The Competition and Consumer Protection Tribunal, CCPT, sitting in Abuja, on Friday, awarded a fine of N150 million against MultiChoice Nigeria Limited for disrespecting its jurisdiction by flouting its order.

The tribunal, in a unanimous decision by its three-member panel, equally ordered MultiChoice to provide Nigerians with a one-month free subscription on its DSTV and GOTV services.

The Saratu Shafii-led tribunal made the orders following an ex-parte motion that was filed on behalf of MultiChoice subscribers by a legal practitioner, Mr Festus Onifade.

The tribunal subsequently fixed July 3 to hear the substantive action that was instituted against the company.

It will be recalled that the panel had on April 29, restrained MultiChoice Nigeria Limited from going ahead with its plans to increase tariffs and cost of its products and services, on May 1.

Onifade had approached the tribunal, alleging that an eighth-day notice the respondent gave before hiking prices of its services, was grossly inadequate.

He contended that the tribunal had in its previous rulings, stressed that at least one month notice must be given to subscribers before such increase in prices of both DSTV and GOTV services could be effected.

Specifically, the Applicant, in the motion that was moved by his counsel, Ejiro Awaritoma, applied for, “an order of interim injunction of this honourable tribunal restraining the 1st defendant whether by themselves, her privies, assigns by whatsoever name called from going ahead with impending price increase schedule to take effect from 1st May, 2024, pending the hearing and determination of the motion on notice.”

As well as, “An order restraining the 1st defendant from taking any step(s) that may negatively affect the rights of the claimant and other consumers in respect of the suit pending the hearing and determination of the Motion on Notice.”

Reps move to create additional state in South-East

The House of Representatives, on Thursday, passed a bill seeking to establish a new state in the southeastern region known as Orlu State.

The bill, which passed its first reading, was sponsored by Ikeagwuonu Ugochinyere (Ideato North South, Imo State), along with other co-sponsoring lawmakers.

According to the draft bill, the creation of Orlu State will amend the 1999 Constitution, increasing the number of states in Nigeria from 36 to 37.

The new state, with Orlu as its capital city, will be created from portions of Imo, Abia, and Anambra states.

The Orlu State Bill

The bill seeks to amend the 1999 Constitution by adding a new paragraph to include 28 local government areas.

These areas are Orlu, Orsu, Oru West, Oru East, Ideato North, Ideato South, Njaba, Nkwerre, Nwangele, Isu, Oguta, Ohaji Egbema, Onuimo, Ihiala, Uga, Uli, Ozubulu, Akokwa, Arondizuogu, Umuchu, Umunze, Umuaku, New Ideato North, Nwabosi West, Nwabosi East, Owerre Nkworji, Alaoma, Amaifeke, and Owerrebiri Umuowa.

Ugochinyere, the primary sponsor of the bill, urged his fellow members of the National Assembly to back the legislation to ensure its successful passage during the second reading.

He suggested that the establishment of Orlu State could result in the formation of Ideato as a senatorial district.

It’s worth mentioning that unlike other geopolitical zones in Nigeria, which have a minimum of six states, the South-East only has five.

How Can I Go Back To My Husband?

I divorced my husband out of group influence last year in 2023. I started working as a nurse, and my friends told me that I could do without a man. So I got motivation from friends and left my husband. As I'm talking, two of my friends who advised me to leave my marriage got married recently. I feel lonely and I can't find another man. So far, I have dated five men, and they just sleep with me and go. These men despite dating me they never respected me owing to fact that I'm not that attractive cos im in my thirties. One of my boyfriend got married to a young girl recently leaving me heartbroken. I'm tired and I need to be in my house with my loving husband. My actions were out of immaturity and wrong advice from evil friends.

I realised my mistakes. How can I convince him to allow me back? How can I persuade my husband?

Please hide my identity.

7 Ways To Attract A Good Husband

Last two weeks or thereabout, I read a post from a lady that really touched my heart. The post was touching and emotional. Actually, that post inspired this article.

Paraphrasing the lady said that, it gives her concern that she is yet to settle down in marriage at her age. Those words are really touching and it takes a courageous lady to make such a statement.

Just like this courageous lady, many ladies out there sincerely desire to settle down, they want a man they can call their own, they want a man that will love and care for them. A lot of ladies have this desire but hardly express it for fear of being termed desperate or being used and exploited by guys. There's nothing wrong with this desire, absolutely. Don't feel bad about it and don't allow anyone to shame you because of it.

So, what I intend to do in this article is to show you ways you can attract a good and a responsible man without appearing being desperate. I will be using the advice that Naomi gave Ruth, her daughter in law that made her to attract and marry Boaz, a godly and wealthy man. You will find this advice in the book of Ruth 3 but my emphasis will be on verses 3 and 11 and then I will add other things.

Let me start by saying that, it is not your job to look for a husband as a lady, it's a man's duty. Reason being that only few men appreciate ladies that throw themselves at them. Also so you don't get exploited, devalued and cheapen. A man is a hunter and he values what he got by some effort and sweat.(Prov 18:22) Your own is to position yourself to attract a husband and also to be found.

So, how do you attract a good and a responsible man without appearing being desperate?

1. Wash Yourself
I'm sorry to say this but I'm gonna be blunt, a lot of ladies are dirty, clothes o, body o, everything is just dirty. No sane man will have anything to do with a dirty lady. Don't be surprise if I tell you that, dirtiness has pushed many guys away from many ladies. Dirtiness pi**es one off.

So, wash yourself. In other words, be neat. Neatness is attractive. And because of how God fashioned your body as a lady, you shouldn't be joking with being neat. Wash yourself. Be neat.

2. Perfume Yourself
A lot of Christian sisters are on this table. Many of them think that body spray, deodorant, Roll on, perfume, etc., are sinful. Listen, applying the aforementioned stuff are not sin Christian sisters. You will keep going from prayer house to another, fasting and and praying, crying for God to give you husband if this is not taken care of. You want to kill person? God won't even allow it. Are you a member of odour of Niger?

So, my sister perfume yourself, that is, smell good. Body odour doesn't give God glory. I'm not insulting anyone, what I'm saying is that you should smell good.

3. Dress Well
Again many of sisters are on this table. You will see a lady in her 20s dressing like a mama in her late 60s, many of them wear clothes that are doing environmental sanitation as they are walking along the road.

Dear sis, dress well. Look good. Your dressing speaks volume. It can make you look smart, young and old. No man wants to marry or get attracted to an old woman. Stop dressing like an old woman meanwhile you are young. Dress smartly. In short, look good. It's attractive.

This also covers your hair. Stop tying scarf every time, your hair will smell o. Plait your hair and allow air into your hair. From head to toe, just look good. We men are attracted by many things, your hair, dress, etc.

4. Be Visible
Many ladies want to marry but they hide themselves in the secret place of their rooms. You want to marry but attend church, you won't, even when you go, after service piaam you have left, attend functions, you won't, attend wedding, you won't, attend seminars, you won't, attend birthdays but you won't. Don't worry my sister, Angel Michael will send you a husband through heavenly DHL.

Brothers of Jesus told him one day that, a man that wants to be a public figure doesn't hide himself in the secret, therefore they advised him to show Himself to the world.(John 7:4) My sister, show yourself to the world. Stop hiding yourself. Position yourself to be found.

5. Be A Good Girl
Boaz told Ruth in verse 11 that, everyone knows that you are a Virtuous woman, in other words, a good girl. So, my sister what are people saying about you. Be a good girl.

Work on your character. Character is always the beauty of a woman. Beauty without character is like a gold ring in a swine pit. Character attracts more husband to you than anything else. If you like bath 5 times a day, empty a bottle of perfume on your body, wear your Christmas dress but if you don't have character, my sister forgot all na wash.

So, in all your neatness, good smell and nice dress, add character to it. Tell yourself the truth about your bad characters and stop saying that men should accept you the way you are, you fit do am?

Good character can make others to recommend you to others. Good character can open doors for you not just the door of marriage.

6. Be Approachable
Many ladies build a hedge a fire around themselves and the wall of Jerusalem and yet they still expect men to come close, Sister how?

Remove every obstacle and obstruction. Dismantle the hedge of fire and the walls of Jerusalem around you. Stop boning your face, who offend you? Put a smile on your face, it's a sign of welcome to us guys. Smile is attractive. Smile.

7. Pray about it
Bible says that, you shouldn't be worried about anything but rather you should pray about everything.(Phillip 4:6-7)

So, pray about it my sister. The Bible also says that God will grant you the desire of your heart. Ask and you shall find. He will grant you your heart desire.

God is a loving and caring father and no father wants his daughter to marry a bad man. Pray and tell God to send you a good husband.

So, here you have may dear sister, 7 ways you can attract good husband to your life.

May the Lord order the step of the right man to you

Thanks for reading

ISU: ONE OF THE KEY ANCESTORS OF THE IGBOS.

The Isu people have a significant place in the history and cultural heritage of the Igbo people, spread across various states in southeastern Nigeria. They are integral part of the Igbo ancestral fabric, and their impact is felt throughout Igboland. Understanding the broader Igbo civilization requires recognizing the resilience and cultural contributions of the Isu people.

Being a true seed of Okeke Isu holds great significance in the history of Igboland. Isu is not just a crop found throughout Igboland; it is the backbone of security in the region. The foundation of Igbo heritage is rooted in the ancestors of the Igbo people, including Agbaja, Isu, Oru, Nri, and Idu, which is why the phrase "Ise" is used after every prayer.

It's fascinating to learn that the Nri civilization revolved around priesthood rather than kingship, while the Isu people were skilled iron smiths, and the Idu people were renowned for their military science. The strong relationship between Isu and Idu in military tactics shaped their strategic collaboration, highlighting the importance of the Isu in Igboland's history.

The settlements of the Isu people across various states are living monuments to a rich cultural past that continues to influence the present and future of Igboland.

The Isu people are considered one of the foundational groups in Igboland, alongside other significant ancestral groups such as Agbaja, Oru, Nri, and Idu. Their historical roles and contributions in iron smithing, military collaboration, cultural preservation, and agricultural and artistic endeavors have been crucial for the development and preservation of Igbo heritage.

SETTLEMENTS OF THE ISU PEOPLE:

1. Anambra State:
- Isu Ofia in Aguata
- Isu Ulo in Orumba South

2. Imo State:
- Isu in Imo State (the largest settlement)
- Isu Njaba in Njaba
- Abor Isu in Isiala Mbano
- Isu Osuama in Isiala Mbano

3. Enugu State:
- Isu Awaa in Awgu
- Isu Ikem in Isi-Uzo

4. Abia State:
- Isuochi in Umunneochi
- Isuikwuato comprising Imenyi, Amawụ, and Oguduasaa
- Isu (Aba, Amachi, Iheosu, Obieze, Amukabi, Amakaram, Obomime etc) in Arochukwu, Abia State

Other Notable Settlements
- Isu Amawu in Isuikwuato, Abia State
- Afor Mgbaleze-Isu and Isu Agbabor in Onicha, Ebonyi State

The Isu people's settlements are more than mere geographic locations; they are living monuments to a rich cultural past that continues to influence the present and future of Igboland. Their story underscores the migration, resilience, and cultural preservation, embodying the spirit of the Igbo people.

BREAKING:The federal government has dragged the 36 State governors of the Federation before the Supreme Court over alleged interference in local government affairs in the country.

The Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) and Minister of Justice, Prince Lateef Fagbemi, SAN, filed the suit against the governors, seeking full autonomy for local government councils as third tier of government in the country.

In the suit marked SC/CV/343/2024, the AGF is praying the apex Court for an order prohibiting State Governors from unilateral, arbitrary and unlawful dissolution of democratically elected local government councils for the local government areas.

The AGF in the originating summons is also praying the Supreme Court for an order permitting the funds standing in the credits of local governments to be directly channelled to them from the Federation Account in line with the provisions of the Constitution as against the alleged unlawful Joint Accounts created by governors.

He also sought order of the apex Court stopping governors from constituting Caretaker Committees to run the affairs of local governments as against the constitutionally recognised and guaranteed democratically councils.

Besides, the federal government applied for an order of injunction restraining the governors, their agents and privies from receiving, spending or tampering with funds released from the Federation Account for the benefits of local governments when no democratically elected local government councils are put in place in the states.

The suit is predicted on 27 grounds among which are that the Nigeria Federation is a creation of the 1999 Constitution with President as Head of the Federal Executive arm of the Federation and has sworn to uphold and give effects to the provisions of the Constitution.

That the governors represent the component states of the Federation with Executive Governors who have also sworn to uphold the Constitution and to at all times, give effects to the Constitution and that the Constitution, being the supreme law, has binding force all over the Federation of Nigeria.

That the Constitution of Nigeria recognises federal, state and local governments as three tiers of government and that the three recognised tiers of government draw funds for their operation and functioning from the Federation Account created by the Constitution.

That by the provisions of the Constitution, there must be a democratically elected local government system and that the Constitution has not made provisions for any other system of governance at the local government level other than democratically elected local government council.

That in the face of the clear provisions of the Constitution, the governors have failed and refused to put in place a democratically elected local government system even where no state of emergency has been declared to warrant the suspension of democratic institutions in the state.

That the failure of the governors to put democratically elected local government system in place, is a deliberate subversion of the 1999 Constitution which they and the President have sworn to uphold.

That all efforts to make the governors comply with the dictates of the 1999 Constitution in terms of putting in place, a democratically elected local government system, has not yielded any result and that to continue to disburse funds from the Federation Account to governors for non-existing democratically elected local government is to undermine the sanctity of the 1999 Constitution.

That in the face of the violations of the 1999 Constitution, the federal government is not obligated under Section 162 of the Constitution to pay any State, funds standing to the credit of local governments where no democratically elected local government is in place.

Fagbemi SAN, therefore, asked the apex Court to invoke Sections 1, 4, 5, 7 and 14 of the Constitution to declare that the State Governors and State Houses of Assembly are under obligation to ensure democratically system at the third tier of government in Nigeria and to also invoke the same sections to hold that the governors cannot lawfully dissolve democratically elected local government coincils.

The Supreme Court has fixed May 30 for hearing of the suit.

24/05/2024

Abam is a populated Igbo clan in Abia state. It is located in Arochukwu/Ohafia federal constituency of Nigeria. Abam is the biggest clan by population and landmass in Arochukwu LGA, and one of the biggest clan in Abia North senatorial district.

Abam is a brother clan to Ohafia,[1] as both Abam and Ohafia share a common ancestry, culture, dialect etc.The progenitor of the people of Abam is known as Onyerubi Atita.[2] As a people, Abam clan in Abia state is sometimes referred to as Abam Onyerubi.

Historically, Abam people were fierce and dreaded warriors. They gloried in war conquests, and participated much in mercenary and military policing duties across Eastern Nigeria. They were contracted across Igboland and beyond for defence purposes, on behalf of communities that were under oppression or annihilation from their neighbouring or far away enemies. Abam warriors were the pioneers of the popular Ikpirikpi Ogu, also known as Abam War Dance, that was adapted by the Ohafia clan as Ohafia War Dance and to Abriba clan as Abriba War Dance. Abam was not alone in having a sophisticated military culture. Other clans around Abam also developed this culture just like the Abam. Clans like Ohafia, Abriba, Edda, Alayi, Igbere, Ututu etc also developed this warrior culture and they all, including Abam built a regional military power bloc that the whole of Igbo land dreaded. Sometimes, these power bloc of warrior clans were utilised and exploited by the Aro people for their own Aro territorial expeditions across Southern Nigeria. It is speculated that without the Abam warriors and other neighbouring Warrior clans like the Abam, that there would have not been an Aro confederecy. Abam people were not just warriors, but were also hardworking farmers and traders.

Abam has a large expanse of fertile land, which makes it a food basket of Abia State. With Palm plantations, Rubber Plantations, Rice paddies, Cassava farms, Cocoa plantations, and others, covering much of the landscape. It is a place with so much peace and hospitality to its indigenes and visitors alike. Its sons and daughters, doing exploits across the globe.

Communities in Abam

Abam in Abia state is made up of 27 villages.[3] Some of the villages are:

• Ndiebe Abam[4]

• Ozu Abam

• Idima Abam

• Amaeke Abam

• Ndi Oji Abam

• Amelu Abam

• Amuru Abam

• Amaogbu Abam

• Atan Abam

• Ndi-Okereke Abam

• Ndi-Ojugwo Abam

• Ndi-Inya Abam

• Ndi-Mmeme Abam

• Ndi-Agwu Abam and others.

Migratory Descendants

There are other communities, towns and clans in other parts of Eastern Nigeria, that trace their ancestry to Abam, largely due to the resettlements of these Abam people to those areas, after their war exploits, or mercenary services, or farm land expansions there.[5] Some of them are:

• Umuhu Town in Bende LGA of Abia State.

• Ndoro Oboro community in Ikwuano LGA of Abia State.

• Ogbuegbulle Oboro community in Ikwuano LGA of Abia State.

• Abba clan in Imo State.

• Osuh clan in Imo state (Anara Town in Isiala Mbano LGA of Imo state, Eziama Obiato Community in Mbaitoli LGA of Imo state, and other Osuh clan communities)

• Ariam/Usaka clan in Ikwuano LGA of Abia State.

• Oloko clan in Ikwuano LGA of Abia State.

• Abam Ubakala community in Umuahia South LGA of Abia State.

• Abam Azia community in Ihiala LGA of Anambra State.

• Abam-Ama Okrika Town in Rivers State, and many others.
