Christian ABURIME

The Minister of Education, Prof. Tahir Mammam, has commended the Governor of Anambra state Prof Chukwuma Charles Soludo for transforming the educational sector in Anambra state and urged states in the country to emulate the Anambra state government especially in the area of basic education.

Mammam made this known when Governor Soludo paid a courtesy visit to the Minister of Education, in Abuja, where he acquainted him with the achievements he has made in the state education sector.

Prof Mamman expressed deep appreciation and commended the outstanding developmental achievements witnessed in Anambra State under Governor Soludo’s leadership.

"We will be leaning on you to serve as a model of what we want states to be in terms of meeting their obligations. If other states are doing what you are doing, we wouldn’t be at this level, Nigeria education sector would have been a better place” he said.

Prof Mamman further assured Governor Soludo of the ministry’s collaboration in every way possible.

“We will continue to provide the policies to ensure no state is left behind and no child is out of school”. Said Mamman

Speaking also, the Minister of State for Education, Dr. Yusuf Tanko Sununu called for massive and effective collaboration to help reduce the number of out-of-school children in the country.

He noted that a roadmap to actualise set objectives in the education sector will be launched soon and expressed hope that the governor will be there to contribute his expertise in taking the sector forward.

Received by the Honourable Minister of Education, Minister of State for Education and top Directors of the ministry, Governor Soludo used the opportunity to extend his heartfelt felicitations to the ministers on their well-deserved appointments

The federal government is a very critical player in this field of education; as we know, education is on the concurrent list. The federal and states work together.
Governor Soludo, reiterated that Nigeria, as a nation, must heavily invest in public primary and secondary schools to provide children of the “poorest of the poor” with access to quality basic education.

He assured that his administration is focused on lifting the system of public schools to become the model that others will look up to

Mrs Soludo Warns Against Excessive Salt Intake, Says It Causes Heart Diseases, Deaths

By Ezeigwe Daniel Arinzechukwu (ABS News)

Anambra Governor's wife, Mrs Nonye Soludo has called for urgent action to modify the over-production and over-consumption of foods and beverages that do not undergo healthy production and nutritional history.

Mrs Soludo who stated this in Awka while running a review of her healthy living projects over the last month, noted that she was very concerned about excessive consumption of foods with high content of sodium, sugar and unhealthy fats as against low intake of whole grains, pulses, vegetables and fruits.

Insisting that going full organic remains the surest way to cut down emerging killer diseases, the governor's wife stated that reducing sodium intake is one of the most cost-effective measures to improve health and reduce the burden of non-communicable diseases.

She further added that the World Health Organization, WHO's current statistics that an estimated 1.89 million deaths each year are associated with consuming too much salt, calls for another look at the health value of foods that everyone consumes.

Mrs Soludo, who is a practicing nutritionist and right health advocate, listed the primary health effects associated with diets high in salt to include raised blood pressure, increasing the risk of cardiovascular diseases, gastric cancer, obesity, among others.

She also called for the reformulation of food products to contain less salt and the setting of target levels for the amount of salt in foods and meals, especially among households.

For adults, WHO recommends less than 2000 milligram per day of sodium; equivalent to just under a teaspoon, while for children aged 2–15 years, it recommends adjusting the adult dose downward based on their energy requirements.

According to the global health watchdog, this recommendation for children does not address the period of exclusive breastfeeding (0–6 months) or complementary feeding with continued breastfeeding (6–24 months).

All salt that is consumed, WHO says, should be iodized, which is essential for healthy brain development in the foetus and young child and optimizing people’s mental function in general.

*SOLUDO'S EDUCATION REFORMS:*

*A COMPREHENSIVE VISION TO TRANSFORM ANAMBRA PUBLIC SCHOOLS INTO BEACONS OF EXCELLENCE*

By Christian ABURIME

In a resolute stride towards revitalizing the public education sector in Anambra State, Governor Charles Soludo, CFR, recently convened a pivotal gathering with head teachers and principals from public schools across the state.

By articulating his administration’s unwavering commitment to raise the standard of education in Anambra’s public schools, the governor has unveiled an innovative initiative that shows he really means business in his relentless education interventions.

The new initiative puts in place an interactive platform of allowing pupils and students to assess their teachers’ performance through dedicated government-provided phone lines, a move aimed at fostering enhanced teaching effectiveness.

There are also plans for an independent evaluation mechanism, comprising professionals, to assess schools. This mechanism will also provide a platform for students, parents, and communities to contribute to the evaluation process, ensuring transparency and accountability throughout the entire system.

Furthermore, the governor pledged to strive towards a future where textbooks for children in public schools would be readily available at no cost. This promise indeed embodies the administration’s dedication to leveling the educational playing field and ensuring that every child has equal access to learning resources.

Also, in alignment with his commitment to pervasive technological integration, the governor announced plans to furnish public schools with government-issued laptops and facilitate free Wi-Fi access. This transformative agenda seeks to position public schools in Anambra as exemplars of educational excellence for the entire state.

As a leader who is passionate about inclusive governance, Governor Soludo is candidly concerned about the glaring disparity between the educational experiences of children from affluent backgrounds and those from economically disadvantaged families.

He stressed that equal opportunity to all, not affluent or those from rich background, is the true differentiator. So, the state government will keep demonstrating a profound sense of duty towards the children in public schools, recognizing their potential as the bedrock of a prosperous society and creating an enabling learning environment for them.

Accordingly, as educators in the state are challenged to be champions of positive change, to uplift the burden from the poor parents and guardians of the children in public schools, so also emphasis is placed on the imperative of Public-Private-Community Partnerships and the establishment of patron’ clubs within public schools, to underscore the significance of quality assurance in the state’s educational landscape.

This call for collective action definitely falls in line with the ethos of the governor’s political party, APGA, which espouses the motto: “Be your brother’s keeper.” It all implies that the state government cannot do it all alone. Everybody’s contribution to the educational reforms is needed, especially in a state like Anambra where the private sector controls a larger share of resources.

On its part, the Soludo government’s recent abolition of fees and levies from nursery to primary six, and JSS 1 to JSS 3, as well as reduction of fees in SS1-SS3 to N5, 000, is a testament to the administration’s dedication to accessible education for all. At the same time, the government understands that the cost implications to school administrations have to be addressed.

For instance, Anambra’s primary schools complained about their running costs which ranged from N800 to about N2,000 per month, depending on the population of each school. While abolishing fees and levies for students, the state government has now raised the primary schools’ running costs to a minimum of N50,000 per month to be borne by the government.

Also, secondary schools in Anambra were given N10,000 per month as running costs (N30, 000 per term). Now, the secondary schools are to retain all of the N5, 000 school fees paid by each of the senior students (SS1-SS3) for their running costs as the minimum, while the government will augment some schools depending on the population of students. For example, a school with 1,000 senior students can now have N5,000, 000 as their running costs per term.

Without doubt, Governor Soludo’s comprehensive vision for educational reforms promises to transform Anambra’s public schools into beacons of excellence, where every child, regardless of background, can flourish and contribute to the state’s collective prosperity in the future. This endeavour is not merely an investment in education, but a profound commitment to the future of Anambra and its citizens. Indeed, Solution is here!

Mrs Soludo Addresses Anambra Youth, Student Leaders, Says Young People Integral To Her Healthy Living Crusade.

By Daniel Ezeigwe (ABS News)

Wife of the Governor of Anambra State, Mrs Nonye Soludo has said that the major aim for bringing her healthy living crusade to Anambra State is to change traditional harmful health habits and establish a new ideology in the way people see and look after their health.

Mrs Soludo stated this while addressing youth leaders from the 179 communities in Anambra State under the auspices of Anambra State Association of Town Unions (ASATU), during their monthly general congress in Awka.

According to the governor's wife, so many people have lost regard for their health by making wrong choices in terms of what they eat and how they care for their body, a negative trend that has given rise to new cases preventable diseases and deaths.

She said that majority of diseases ravaging the current human society have thrived as a result of continued wrong consumption choices, and disregard to organic health philosophy.

Addressing the youths virtually, Mrs Soludo said that the crusade has been taken to the grassroots through ongoing youth engagements across the 21 local councils of the state, which are designed to get Anambra youths become lease advocates of the movement in their different communities.

Mrs Soludo explained that when the youths get well involved in the healthy living campaign, they could also help to strengthen and drive its visions, recognizing the role young people play in societal development.

Earlier, the Anambra State Commissioner for Health, Dr Afam Obidike said that by engaging with Anambra youths and by taking her crusade directly to the grassroots, the governor's wife has taken another important step to make the crusade a common practice in the state.

The President of ASATU Youth Wing, Comrade Ken Okoli, on his part, said that the youths will support the crusade, and take its messages to all corners of the state.

ASATU lady organizers and student coordinators, among others, were also at the event.

By Christian ABURIME

Anambra State Governor, Prof. Chukwuma Charles Soludo has vowed to clean and rid Upper Iweka, Onitsha of touts and illegal structures.

Governor Soludo stated this when he paid an unscheduled visit to Upper Iweka, Onitsha, where he assured ndi Anambra of cleaning up Iweka Road.

The Governor announced that there are strict rules for motor parks administrators if they want to operate, pointing out that all vehicles must operate within the garages, not loading on the established walkways.

He warned that any garage that does not comply with the directive will be locked up, assuring that Upper Iweka will no longer be a den for touts and criminals.

"From Moore street-Iweka road through Ochanja, down to Owerri road we are fixing and cleaning up the area to make it clean. All petty traders along the road will be relocated to Oduigbo and Ogbaru," the Governor said.

He decried how the transport buses block the drainages, ordering them to leave the spots and start loading inside their respective parks.

The Governor stressed the disorderliness and lawlessness in Onitsha is driving away customers who intend to come from far away to trade in the state and warned criminal elements perpetrating illegality and criminality in the state to leave or face the full weight of the law.

"If you must remain in Anambra, you must be gainfully employed. If you are jobless, enroll in the one youth two skills to be empowered. Those who completed the pilot phase will be empowered very soon", he added.

On his part, the TC Chairman of Onitsha South, Mr. Emeka Orji who was tasked by the Governor to ensure that transport bus companies that keep loading on drainages are sealed up, lauded the Governor for coming to ascertain the outlook of the area.
