Successfully participated in the Sri Lanka Press Institute's three-day workshop on Open-Source Intelligence Journalism, held in collaboration with the International Centre for Journalists. The workshop took place from June 10 to 12 at the prestigious Kingsbury Hotel in Colombo.

Our team joined fellow broadcast, print, and online journalists in an immersive learning experience conducted by Mr. William Munro and Mr. Mathieu Domingo, esteemed analysts at the Centre for Information Resilience in the United Kingdom.

The workshop was a comprehensive introduction to open-source tools and resources essential for reporting, investigative journalism, data visualization, and fact-checking. We engaged in a variety of hands-on activities that allowed us to practice and refine these techniques, preparing us to integrate them into our daily journalistic work.

This enriching experience not only enhanced our skills but also strengthened our commitment to producing high-quality, accurate journalism.

Successfully participated in the Multimedia Skills and Tools session, which was part of the IREX PRO-INFO MediaInc. Incubator cohort. This session was a significant learning experience, tailored to equip participants with essential skills in modern multimedia and multiplatform news strategies.

The session was led by an esteemed digital media consultant and journalist, whose expertise spans across notable institutions like the BBC in the UK and challenging environments in countries such as Syria, Serbia, and Ukraine.

The facilitator’s extensive background in multimedia journalism provided a rich foundation for the session. His work in diverse and often volatile regions highlighted the importance of adaptability and innovation in media practices. Throughout the session, he shared valuable insights on leveraging multimedia tools to create engaging and impactful content. We explored various strategies to enhance storytelling through different platforms, which is crucial in today’s fast-evolving digital landscape.

This experience was immensely beneficial for our team. The practical knowledge and advanced techniques we gained will significantly improve our media production and delivery capabilities. By integrating these new skills, we are better positioned to produce high-quality, compelling content that resonates with our audience. This session has not only broadened our technical proficiency but also inspired us to push the boundaries of our creative potential.

Our news reporters recently participated in a two-day session as part of the IREX PRO-INFO MediaInc. Incubator cohort. These mentoring and training sessions were led by a media consultant with extensive experience in Europe, Africa, and Asia.

On the first day, the focus was on "angles and distinctive treatments," helping our reporters learn how to craft more compelling and unique stories. The second day concentrated on "reporting in the field," providing practical training to enhance their skills in real-world situations. Additionally, the session covered reimagining election coverage, emphasizing the issues that are most important to Sri Lankan voters.

These sessions are incredibly useful for us. They enhance our storytelling techniques, improve our field reporting capabilities, and ensure that our election coverage is relevant and impactful. This training ultimately helps us deliver more engaging, accurate, and insightful news to our audience.

Our news reporters participated in a three-day 'Journalism 101' session as part of the IREX PRO-INFO MediaInc. Incubator cohort. These mentoring and training sessions were led by a former BBC Current Affairs Editor and Executive Producer.

These sessions significantly benefited our news reporters by enhancing their journalistic skills and knowledge. They learned techniques in reporting, improved their ability to produce compelling and accurate news stories, and gained insights into ethical journalism practices. The guidance from an experienced professional provided them with a deeper understanding of current affairs and media production, enabling them to deliver higher quality and more impactful journalism.

Successfully participated in two-day residential workshop at the Goldi Sands Hotel in Negombo organized by the Media Law Forum from May 15th to June 16th, 2024. This workshop served as a crucial platform for media actors and lawyers to delve into the complexities of the Online Safety Act.

The first day of the workshop featured two specialized sessions tailored to meet the distinct needs of media actors and lawyers. Participants engaged in in-depth discussions and interactive sessions, focusing on understanding the nuances of the Online Safety Act within their respective fields.

The second day emphasized collaboration and networking between media actors and Lawyers, aiming to identify opportunities for cooperative efforts in the effective implementation of the Online Safety Act.

Prominent figures from the legal and media sectors graced the event, providing invaluable insights and expertise. Notable contributors included Dr. Ranga Kalansooriya, Prof. Madhubhashini Hewage, Dr. Thusitha Abeysekara, Attorney-at-Law Thishya Weragoda, Attorney-at-Law Jagath Liyana Arachchi, Attorney-at-Law Lakshan Dias, Attorney-at-Law Viranjana Herath, veteran journalist Kulasri Kariyawasam, veteran journalist Mandana Ismail, Attorney-at-Law Ainkaran Kugadasan, Attorney-at-Law Niroshika Liyana Muhandiram, and Attorney-at-Law Jayantha Dehiattage.

This dynamic workshop not only provided a comprehensive understanding of the legal framework surrounding online safety but also fostered meaningful connections and collaborations essential for the effective implementation of the Online Safety Act.

Channel19 is one of the two media organizations selected for this six-month program. Our team will gain invaluable skills and insights to enhance our outlet's growth and success in the Sri Lankan media industry.

Successfully attended a 2-day workshop that explores Collaborative Strategies for Implementing the Online Safety Act by The Media Law Forum.

The Media Law Forum hosted an enriching two-day residential workshop at the esteemed Mount Lavinia Hotel, spanning from May 11th to May 12th, 2024. This workshop served as a pivotal platform for media actors and lawyers to delve into the intricacies of the Online Safety Act.

Day one of the workshop featured two distinct sessions tailored to the needs of media actors and lawyers separately. Participants engaged in focused discussions and interactive sessions aimed at dissecting the nuances of the Online Safety Act within their respective professional domains.

On the second day, the workshop pivoted towards fostering collaboration and networking opportunities between media actors and legal experts. This day was dedicated to exploring avenues for synergistic efforts between media actors and lawyers in effectively implementing the Online Safety Act.

Distinguished figures from the legal and media spheres graced the event as resource persons, offering invaluable insights and expertise. Among them were President's Council Mr. Saliya Peiris, Dr. Thusitha Abeysekara, Attorney-at-Law Thishya Weragoda, Senior Lecturer Wijayananda Rupasinghe, Attorney-at-Law Lakshan Dias, Attorney-at-Law Viranjana Herath, Veteran Journalist Shan Wijetunga,Attorney-at-Law Prabodha Rathnayake Attorney-at-Law Ainkaran Kugadasan, Attorney-at-Law Dilrukshi Hadunnetti, Communication Specialists Omar Rajarathnam and Attorney-at-Law Jayantha Dehiattage.

This dynamic workshop not only provided a comprehensive understanding of the legal framework surrounding online safety but also facilitated meaningful connections and collaborations vital for the effective implementation of the Online Safety Act.

Successfully participated for a workshop on 'Journalism in the Age of Disinformation: The Truth Toolkit for Journalists in the Colombo District.

U.S. Embassy Colombo, Sri Lanka, and the Sri Lanka Press Institute organized a two-day workshop series on 'Journalism in the Age of Disinformation: The Truth Toolkit for Journalists' across the island. The Colombo District workshop of the series was held on May 6th and 7th, 2024, at Renuka City Hotel. Two separate workshops were conducted for Sinhala and Tamil Medium Journalists.
During these sessions, we were guided into strategies for spotting and combating disinformation, particularly in the digital landscape where information overload is prevalent. The aim was to empower journalists as key influencers of societal discourse, urging them to exercise discernment in handling information daily.
We were equipped with essential tools and techniques to discern fact from fiction, emphasizing the importance of embracing new technologies to enhance their journalistic endeavors.
