One day my brother and me were near to sleep in the night but child of our small father come to tell us that his friends were arranging dance of lion. They say that if you go with clean wealth you enter, if you go alone they dry you.

That night we leave our home to go and steal girls to go with them in the dance of lion. On the way those are us, up to Aciit village in another home of a man called Etyang’ he was having three female daugthers. His big daughter was carrying like stupid, I danced with her in another disco of funeral and I hear very good. A girl with a lot of meat is good when you rub, I cannot hide this secret.

Now in the compound of Etyang’ me and my friends are those. Dogs of neighbor started to cry and my brother say no running. We sleep in grass and keep quiet. Cough come in my neck but I catch it with energy. Dogs continue to cry.

Etyang’ come out and started to look why dogs were crying. Good luck moon was still young and it had already fall. He see only dark, but us we see him because our eyes had stayed in the dark for long. That father of girls started to come near bush where me and my friends were sleeping.

One heart tell me to run, another one say I sleep. If bad bad. He come and stand near my head with panga in his hand. I hear difficult to remove air. My hair of up and down started to stand, blood stand and I borrow heart heart. He remove his small leg and started to remove water direct on my face. Say urine to burn my face and choke me! I was near to cry but it end.

That night me I did not go in dance of lion, I go home to bath and sleep. Me I stopped to steal girls and go in dance of lion that day.

The Mischievous Trio-Review by Mary Njeri.

1. Gitero's mischief and the natural suspense as the story unfolds makes it hard to put the book down once one lays their eyes on it. The persona's dilemma to either be Gitero's friend or be the responsible boy like his parents want is well felt. It ends beautifully, sending a sigh of relief on the reader who all this time has their breathe held by the scenes. The lesson is sure.

2. The story begins on a sad note. It sends chills down the reader's spine as the writer describes horrifying experiences of youngsters in the marginalised communities. The vivid description of one misery after another on the girls would cause one to lay the book down in mourning, before picking up again. One can't afford to miss out on how the story ends. It is a story full of hope through diligence and enthusiasm. One thing I really loved with the story is the sensitive balance maintained at the end between marriage and education for girls. The two don't always have to be in contrast to each other. A healthy society embraces both family and education.

3. This hilarious story vamboosh*ts the reader into a world of humour, warming the heart and allowing the reader into the mind of a daring and curious youngster. The writer entertains and sends a warning to any naughty boy trying to pull the strings of life while still on his mama's (father's) tether.

5. This has to be the chief of all mischief. A trio of fearless boys. Hardworking at hand and in wit. Lesson after lesson but still, they seem to have resigned to the fate that life is for the living. And to live they do! The reader makes it to lay bare the consequences of mischief for any youngster who dares to catch the lesson.

6. Every young girl knows this story. Every young girl chooses a side by their conduct whether to rise above life's lemons or to cheekily take shortcuts and pay or regret later. The reader attempts to caution young girls on the glaring dangers of awakening feminine responsibilities before the time is ripe.

7. Ever experiences the warmth of a loving, caring and tight knit family? This story is home for you. The writer creatively describes the richness of the family knot, and how with a unified unity, families can beat all odds to remain united and peaceful for everyone's good.

8. This is a rich story in culture. It serves the curiosity into some of the cultural beliefs through a matriarch to the offsprings of her offsprings' offsprings. The writer tactfully challenges some of the culture-rooted-evil that has permeated religion particularly Christianity. This story will challenge every youngster to examine what they believe in. It pricks the conscience in a way to send it out to find the true Truth, as far as faith and believe are concerned.
