BIMSTEC FREE TRADE ZONE WILL INCREASE TRADE – BIMSTEC SECRETARY GENERAL
The Secretary General of the Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation, or BIMSTEC, Indra Mani Pandey, says that discussions are underway to initiate a free trade zone within the BIMSTEC area in order to increase intra-regional trading among its member states.
Joining our current affairs program, At HydePark on Ada Derana 24 with Indeewari Amuwatte, the Secretary General said that the framework is in place for the zone, and if it initiated, private sector investments will see an increase within the BIMSTEC region.
Also discussing the collaboration and the benefit of BIMSTEC, Secretary General Pandey said that a technology transfer facility is slated to be opened in Colombo going forward, enabling member states to have access to technology and tech based research among its members.

THAI FREE TRADE AGREEMENT UNLOCKED BIGGER MARKET FOR SRI LANKA - DR. DAYARATNE SILVA
Former ambassador to the World Trade Organization Dr. Dayaratne Silva says that under the Free Trade Agreement signed between Thailand and Sri Lanka, no tariff concessions have been given to Sri Lanka's apparel products and some coconut products.
Joining me earlier on our Current Affairs Program 'At Hyde Park', Dr Silva said that Sri Lanka has tapped into a bigger market as Thailand's economy is much more integrated with the International Economy.
Also sharing insights on the deterioration of Sri Lankan exports, Dr. Silva said that, in stark contrast to most globally well-integrated economies, Sri Lanka is following more inward-looking trade policies, which prevents the country from creating businesses that can compete internationally.
He further added that Sri Lanka's gradually recovering economy must bring in more export-oriented tariff regimes to optimize the benefits of the signed trade agreements.

Meanwhile, also present at the program was the Partner and head of the tax division at Ernst and Young, Sulaiman Nishtar who, commenting on the employer's responsibility of paying income tax on behalf of Employees in the instance transactions have not been made, said that employers will be held responsible for the unpaid income tax.

Among the most affected by Sri Lanka's economic crisis were the employees of the country's Small to Medium scale enterprises who saw their disposable incomes deteriorate while being pushed into unemployment. As we move into 2024, Central Bank Governor Dr. Governor Dr. Nandalal Weerasinghe is of the view that the Government should do more to support the lower income earners so affected through the country's many development projects.
