PDP leader Zaffer Mir inspects hazardous mining at Doodganga stream
Asks Dyp. CM Surinder Chaudhary to intervene & halt the illegal mineral extraction
Srinagar, Oct 28: J&K People's Democratic Party leader Zaffer Mir (Lasjan) conducted a late-night inspection on Sunday of ongoing illegal mining activities in the Doodganga stream, visiting areas such as Alipora, Mudbal, and Sogam within Chadoora Tehsil, District Budgam.
During his visit, Mir witnessed extensive environmental degradation due to heavy machinery actively mining the riverbed, which poses serious risks to local agriculture and the broader ecosystem.
Interacting with local residents, he was apprised of an unauthorized stone crusher operating on the Doodganga riverbed at Alipora that has further aggravated the environmental damage.
In response, Mir committed to formally raise this issue with Deputy Chief Minister Shri Surinder Chowdary, who oversees the Mining portfolio and will request his immediate intervention to halt these unlawful activities.
Addressing the media, Mir pointed out that the National Green Tribunal (NGT) had also previously imposed penalties on non-local contractors for similar infractions, directing the district administration to implement stringent measures.
"Despite NGT directives, illegal mining continues unabated. The government, elected by the people, must prioritize ending these detrimental practices to safeguard our environment and local resources," Mir asserted.
