Residents of Pattan Demand Urgent Road Widening

Pattan, Jan 30, CNS: Hundreds of commuters traveling from North Kashmir continue to suffer due to severe traffic congestion and delays in the long-pending road widening project in Pattan town of Baramulla district. Frustrated by the inaction, locals have once again urged Chief Minister Omar Abdullah to fulfill his promise and resolve this critical issue on a priority basis.

While acknowledging the efforts of Pattan Police in traffic management, the local community and the Traders’ Body have demanded immediate road widening in the Pattan market. They believe this will not only ease congestion but also allow shopkeepers to reconstruct and revamp the marketplace.

According to reports, daily commuters traveling between North Kashmir and Srinagar have expressed strong dissatisfaction with the District and Divisional administration for neglecting the much-needed road expansion within Pattan’s municipal limits. Locals argued that while traffic on the Baramulla National Highway has increased significantly over the years, the road remains unchanged for over a century.

Business owners in Pattan have also voiced their concerns, stating that the continuous traffic jams and lack of parking facilities have severely impacted their livelihoods. They further allege that despite restrictions preventing them from renovating their shops, the authorities have failed to address the road issue.

President of the Traders Federation Pattan, Nasir Bashir Shah, expressed his frustration, stating, “We feel helpless as our repeated pleas to the LG administration, Divisional Commissioner, and Deputy Commissioner have gone unheard.”

While appreciating the police’s role in regulating traffic, locals argue that enforcement alone is not a sustainable solution. “The real fix lies in immediate road widening within municipal limits, rather than relying on a bypass from Hanjiwera to Tapper Pattan,” they added.

The locals urged the government to take swift action to address their longstanding concerns. (CNS)

Massive Fire Breaks Out in Anantnag Forest, Authorities Struggle to Contain Flames
Anantnag, Jan 29, CNS: A massive fire erupted in the forest area near Liver Village in South Kashmir’s Anantnag district on Wednesday evening, causing extensive damage to the flora and fauna.

According to sources, the blaze has engulfed Compartment 56 of the Lidar Forest Division in Bijbehara’s Mattan Forest Range. The fire is spreading rapidly due to the dense vegetation, making firefighting efforts extremely challenging.

"A significant portion of the forest is burning, and due to the difficult terrain, accessibility is a major hurdle," a forest official told CNS. "However, teams are working tirelessly to bring the situation under control."

Authorities have deployed firefighting teams and local volunteers in an attempt to douse the flames, but the intensity of the fire and the remote location are hampering their efforts. The extent of the damage is yet to be assessed, but environmentalists fear a serious impact on the region’s biodiversity.

The cause of the fire remains unknown, and officials are monitoring the situation closely. Local residents have urged the administration to take immediate measures to prevent further destruction. (CNS)

JKPICCA President Meets J&K Bank MD to Address Key Industry Concerns

Jammu,28 Jan The President of the Jammu & Kashmir Fruits & Vegetables Processing & Integrated Cold Chain Association (JKPICCA), Mr. Bashir Ahmad Naik, held a maiden meeting with J&K Bank’s newly appointed Managing Director, Mr. Amitava Chatterjee, at the bank’s headquarters in Jammu. The meeting marked the start of a collaborative effort to strengthen the ties between the financial institution and the local industries in Jammu and Kashmir.
Welcoming the new MD, Mr. Naik expressed optimism about the bank’s future role under his leadership and highlighted the need for greater financial and industrial cooperation to drive regional economic growth.
A strong appeal was made to lower interest rates to less than 9%, as high-ticket loans are critical to the sector. Mr. Naik emphasized that linking interest rates with compliance to internal or external ratings creates hurdles, and a uniform rate would significantly benefit businesses.
The President stressed the need for comprehensive crop insurance for all Kisan Credit Card (KCC) loans, ensuring farmers have a financial safety net against risks, thereby boosting confidence and productivity in the agricultural sector.
Mr. Naik urged the MD to enhance services at the Lassipora branch by increasing staff and extending operational hours to facilitate quicker cheque clearances, thereby supporting businesses in the area.
Responding positively to the concerns, Mr. Chatterjee assured the JKPICCA President that immediate attention would be given to these issues. Both parties reaffirmed their commitment to building a strong partnership to support local industries and enhance the region's economic infrastructure.
“We believe these steps will yield significant benefits for the local economy, and we are confident that J&K Bank will act swiftly to implement these recommendations,” said Mr. Naik.
The Jammu & Kashmir Fruits & Vegetables Processing & Integrated Cold Chain Association (JKPICCA) represents stakeholders in the fruits and vegetables processing and cold chain sectors. The association focuses on collaboration, operational efficiency, and sustainable growth to support the development of the region’s agricultural and cold storage industries.

This meeting is expected to pave the way for closer cooperation between JKPICCA and J&K Bank, fostering economic progress in Jammu and Kashmir.

In Srinagar, the minimum temperature on Monday night dipped to minus 4.3 degrees Celsius, 3.4 degrees below the seasonal average. However, the city recorded a daytime high of 14.2 degrees Celsius, which was 6.4 degrees above the expected maximum for this time of year.
Pahalgam, a key base camp for the annual Amarnath Yatra in south Kashmir, reported a low of minus 6.6 degrees Celsius, slightly below the normal by 1.1 degrees. Its maximum temperature, however, soared to 11.6 degrees Celsius—over six degrees higher than the average.
In the north Kashmir resort of Gulmarg, renowned for skiing, the minimum temperature was recorded at minus 5.0 degrees Celsius, which was warmer than the expected minus 7.6 degrees.

Meanwhile, Qazigund, the gateway town to the Valley, experienced a low of minus 4.1 degrees Celsius, 1.6 degrees below the average. Its maximum temperature reached an unseasonably high 15 degrees Celsius, almost eight degrees above normal.

GMC Rajouri Holds Discharge of Budaal Patients Pending Forensic Reports on Toxin

Rajouri: 28 Jan. Authorities at Government Medical College (GMC) Rajouri have deferred the discharge of eight patients from Budaal village, citing the need for conclusive forensic reports on the toxin they consumed. Currently, 11 patients from the village are undergoing treatment at GMC Rajouri, with eight initially scheduled for discharge today after being taken off atropine.

The decision was made by an expert committee chaired by Principal Dr. A.S. Bhatia, who emphasized the importance of identifying the exact nature of the poisonous substance before discharging the patients.

Dr. Bhatia highlighted that, while atropine treatment has yielded a 100% recovery rate, the absence of typical symptoms of organophosphorus poisoning in the patients raises concerns about the possibility of another toxin being involved.

“Certain poisons have long-lasting effects that can surface weeks after exposure. Until we have the final forensic report, it is crucial to ensure the patients are placed on the correct medication to prevent long-term complications,” Dr. Bhatia stated.

The team’s cautious approach aims to guarantee patient safety and ensure that appropriate treatment is administered upon discharge.
