*JEI Officially Extends Support to Aijaz Ahmad Mir in Zainapora Constituency*

Umer Rashid

*Srinagar, September 3* Jamaat-e-Islami (JEI) has officially extended its support to Aijaz Ahmad Mir, an independent candidate in the Zainapora constituency of Shopian for the upcoming elections.

Shameem Ahmad Thoker, the State Election Incharge of JEI, confirmed the decision to Kashmir Dispatch, stating, "We are extending our support to Aijaz Ahmad Mir, the independent candidate in Zainapora, Shopian."

This endorsement marks a notable shift for JEI, which has generally avoided openly supporting candidates in recent elections. Aijaz Ahmad Mir, a former legislator

The decision is seen as a strategic move that could reshape the political landscape. JEI’s backing could strengthen Mir's position, particularly among grassroots supporters and undecided voters who share the organization’s values.

JEI sources indicate that the decision followed extensive discussions, considering its potential impact on both local and regional dynamics. The party's focus on local representation and community engagement is thought to have influenced its choice.

With this announcement, the political landscape in Zainapora is set to become more dynamic, and observers are keenly watching how JEI’s support will affect the election's outcome.

Major political shift! Nitish Kumar and Chandrababu Naidu Poised to Exit NDA?

In a surprising development, renowned parliamentarian Manoj Kumar Jha has claimed that Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and TDP leader Chandrababu Naidu are poised to leave the Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led NDA to form a government with the INDIA coalition.

This move is attributed to their shared aversion to what they perceive as the BJP’s vendetta politics, according to RJD national spokesperson Manoj Kumar Jha.

Jha referenced Kumar’s prediction that “those who came to power will be ousted in 2024” and noted his foundational role in creating the INDIA bloc. “We have previously allied with both Nitish Kumar and Chandrababu Naidu. They share a dislike for the vendetta politics the BJP is known for. Narendra Modi seems to be on his way out, and we hope these leaders will play a key role in the change of guard at the Centre,” Jha told PTI.

Despite this, spokespersons for the TDP and JD(U) have publicly endorsed Modi as India’s next prime minister, according to Reuters.

When questioned about whether RJD leaders, including national president Lalu Prasad and Tejashwi Yadav, were in touch with Kumar, Jha cryptically responded, “Those who need to contact him are talking to him. Our leader Tejashwi Yadav has been saying for some time that Nitish Kumar will make a significant decision around June 4.”

Jha clarified that he was not directly appealing to Kumar or Naidu but was merely expressing hope based on his understanding of their dispositions.

Notably, the JD(U) outperformed expectations in the Lok Sabha elections, leading in 14 of the 16 seats it contested, surpassing the BJP, which was trailing in five out of the 17 seats it contested, while TDS is leading on 20 seats in Andhra Pradesh.

The Bhartiya Janta Party is presently leading on 240 seats, thirty three (33) seats short of majority; while the INDIA alliance is ahead on 235 seats and the majority is 273 seats.

In Bihar, the INDIA bloc led in only eight out of 40 Lok Sabha seats. However, Jha expressed confidence that the coalition’s numbers would improve, despite his concerns about the slow counting process.

Kumar’s JD(U) was initially part of the INDIA bloc, a coalition of opposition parties formed to challenge the BJP-led NDA ahead of the 2024 elections. Kumar, known for his frequent political realignments, left the INDIA bloc to rejoin the NDA a few months before the polls..

J&K Govt Sacks Erstwhile J&K Legislative Council Assistant for Corruption

Srinagar, April 24: The Jammu and Kashmir Government terminated a Watch and Ward Assistant of the former J&K Legislative Council for taking Rs. 5 lakh from a person promising a government job.

As per the news, the assistant, identified as Fayaz Ahmad Bhat, faced serious charges after allegedly receiving a hefty sum of Rs. 5 lakh from a person namely Dilawar Manzoor from Berthipora, Shopian. The money was reportedly taken under false pretenses of securing a government job for Manzoor.

Bhat was served with a memorandum outlining the charges against him and was given 15 days to respond. The charges included the accusation that Bhat unlawfully accepted Rs. 5 lakh from Dilawar Manzoor, part of which was deposited into his bank account, with the remainder paid in cash.

The alleged action was carried out with the promise of securing a government job for Manzoor. Such conduct was deemed a violation of Rule-3 of the Jammu and Kashmir Government Employees (Conduct) Rules, 1971.

The investigation into the matter revealed that Bhat's actions tarnished the image and reputation of the institution. Following a thorough inquiry, the charges against Bhat were substantiated, leading to his dismissal from service with immediate effect.

The dismissal, in accordance with Clause (viii) of Rule 30 of the Jammu and Kashmir Civil Services (Classification, Control and Appeal) Rules, 1956, also renders him ineligible for future employment.

PDP leader Parra says there was pressure on our leaders to desert the party

Updated - April 18, 2024 at 10:23 PM.

In this conversation, Waheed Ur Parra, PDP LS candidate for Srinagar-Budgam, says the BJP had resorted to intimidation

BY GULZAR BHAT

The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) youth president and Lok Sabha candidate from Srinagar-Budgam constituency Waheed Ur Rehman Parra (37) has embarked on a door-to-door poll campaign.

Hailing from Naira, an idyllic village tucked away in thick apple orchards, some 36 kms south of Srinagar, Parra’s political journey has been anything but smooth. He spent a good 19 months in jail after being arrested by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) in a militancy related case. In 2020, Parra fought and won his debut District Development Council (DDC) election from jail. He, however, was not allowed to take the oath. In 2023, he received the Yale Peace Fellowship at Yale University’s International Leadership Centre, but he was barred from travelling to the US to pursue the programme.

After the PDP nominated Parra as the party candidate from Srinagar- Budgam Lok Sabha seat, he is trying hard to wrest control of the seat presently held by the National Conference president Farooq Abdullah. In an interview with businessline, Parra says that his party stands alone in the LS polls and exudes confidence in achieving victory.

Q In the 2019 Lok Sabha and the 2014 Assembly elections, you were deeply engaged in canvassing for the top PDP candidates including the former Chief Minister Mehbooba M***i. Were those elections different from the 2024 polls?

The situation is completely different today. Since August 5, 2019, there has been a complete silence. The region has been deprived of a democratic process for the last five years. Now, for the first time, we are reaching out to the people. There has been a pervasive sense of suffocation and the people are looking for a relief valve.

Q. Earlier, people were largely disinclined to cast their ballots, given the boycott call; how is the response of the people this time around?

The response is positive. People are granting more legitimacy to the mainstream political parties, showing a greater desire to connect with the leadership. But at the same time there is much pressure on them and they are not able to express themselves openly. People are also willing to listen to us. Moreover, previously, people were casting their votes to form a government, now they are voting to have a voice.

Q Do you say these elections are not fought for governance issues?

The demand for governance is not as pronounced as the desire to be heard is. The prevailing sentiment on the ground is that the people need a voice.

Q Voice for what?

Voice for being heard out. After August 5, 2019, the people feel that they are neglected and disenfranchised. There is a sense of disempowerment among them. They feel that they are politically not as empowered as they should have been. The Assembly elections have not been held for the last 10 ten years. Even the panchayat elections were not held.

Q In one of your rallies in July 2023, you criticised the National Conference, saying that it has scaled down its demands to hold elections only. Now you are talking about the same elections. Don’t you think it is in deep contrast to what you had said earlier?

See, elections cannot be a demand. They are our right. You can’t suspend democracy. The elections should have happened as a matter of course. My question was that when a party is making everything about elections, it undermines the broader democratic process. Today, the issue in Kashmir is not about elections and government formation. It is more than that. As I said, the people feel unrepresented and disempowered. Even if a government were formed tomorrow, it would not change that sentiment unless it truly reflects the consent of people.

Q During all your poll rallies, you repeatedly say that your party was disintegrated. Who do you hold responsible for it?

Obviously, it is the BJP that is responsible for it. There was much pressure on our leaders to desert the party. They were intimidated and the party is employing the same strategy in the other parts of the country. .

Q Why could not the BJP break the other parties particularly the National Conference or intimidate their leaders?

Obviously, it is the BJP that is responsible for it. There was much pressure on our leaders to desert the party. They were intimidated and the party is employing the same strategy in the other parts of the country.

QWhy could not the BJP break the other parties particularly the National Conference or intimidate their leaders?

I think it is because of our party’s fearlessness and commitment to speaking truth to power. Our party president Mehbooba M***i has been more vocal than other leaders. The people in the Centre were not happy with us and they pulled out all the stops to disintegrate our party.

Q Do you mean the current dispensation is not happy with you?

Yes, the government in the Centre

Q But earlier you had an alliance with them.

Yes, but later we have had some serious disagreements with them regarding the implementation of the agenda of alliance and that is where the whole tussle began

Q But it was not the PDP that pulled out of the alliance?

There is no doubt that the BJP walked out of the alliance. But it was because we mounted persistent pressure on them to implement the agenda of alliance, which they did not and ultimately they pulled the plug.

Q What is your perspective on the emergence of new parties like the Jammu and Kashmir Apni Party and Ghulam Nabi Azad-led Democratic Progressive Azad Party, given that several of your leaders have switched over to them?

These parties don’t have any legitimacy. They were formed to normalise what happened on August 5, 2019 and weaken the PDP.

Q After the National Conference and Congress decided to contest together on all six seats of Jammu and Kashmir, and Ladakh, does PDP feel dumped by the INDIA alliance ?

We are alone in this whole fight. Be it BJP and its proxies or Congress and National Conference, It is everybody versus Mehbooba ji. We are cornered by every political party and that is for various reasons. But our fight is not for winning or speaking only, but for representing the reality of Kashmir. We hold firm in our belief that victory will be ours.

Of political Iftar parties

With elections round the corner, some political parties in Kashmir sought to turn these parties into public outreach programs

GULZAR BHAT

The holy month of Ramadan is over, so are the lively Iftar parties. Each year, when Ramadan enters its last leg, people organise Iftar parties, bringing relatives, friends and neighbours together.

Political leaders also throw such parties and on their guest list are usually bureaucrats, political friends, journalists, and retired police officers.

With elections round the corner, some political parties in Kashmir sought to turn these parties into public outreach programs. They hosted a flurry of such parties well-nigh in all important towns and even in villages of the Valley, inviting gullible people in the name of Iftar.

Last week, one such party was hosted at a small hamlet tucked away in thick apple orchards in south Kashmir’s Pulwama district. Hundreds of guests were invited from different places. Dozens of reporters from the area were also the part of this “grand Iftar party”. Additionally, an army of unsolicited guests or say workers showed up at the venue to have the Iftar meals. The street leading to the venue witnessed bumper to bumper traffic. Many invitees had pulled their cars off the road that led to long traffic snarls. The people honked horns as they tried to drive past with policemen struggling to clear their way. An unending stream of cars and bikes caught in the jam were moving inch by inch. The sleepy village turned into a maelstrom of crowds. The invitees were trying to open the gate of the building where the Iftar meals were scheduled to be served. The sturdy metallic gate was firmly shut and the people were clueless about their hosts. A knot of young men, one introducing himself as the secretary sahab of the party, tried to open the gate. But the cops stationed there stopped them to do that. They were perhaps waiting for a green signal from the missing host(s) or simply following the security protocol.

Soon the loud speakers fitted on the minarets of nearby mosques raised the call - Azan. The people residing in the neighbourhood broke their fast and made a dash for the mosques. The Iftar party invitees, on the other hand, struggled to break their day-long fast. A few had some dates they bit them into pieces and shared with fellow invitees. Others tried to look for shops to buy water or something to eat.

A few flew into a rage and argued with the policemen, while many left the venue feeling humiliated. However, some dedicated guests stayed put to relish the Iftar feast.

Finally, after much wait and cacophony, the Iftar meals were served by the local political leaders. The mismanagement marred the public outreach program organised in the name of Iftar party. What could be more shameful for a host than having the cops manage the guests.

The political parties should be respectful to the people and their sentiments, particularly when it comes to hosting them on such crucial occasions. They should steer clear of politicising the Iftar meals for their petty political gains. An Iftar party should not be made an occasion to send out a tacit message for seeking votes.

Moreover, political Iftar parties have always been a sensitive affairs. In 2014, an Iftar invitation spurred the cancellation of foreign secretaries talks between India and Pakistan. Be cautious next time!
