Shikara owners openly overcharge toursits at Ghat no 2 in kashmir's famous Nigeen Lake. With no fixed rates a sting operation reveals how this mafia openly overcharges tourists for ferrying them from Ghat no 2 to houseboats. In the video they can be heard saying " we charge between 300 to 400 Rs," While the government fixed rate is 100 Rs for ferrying them to other side which is not even 5 minute ride, these shikara owners charge Rs 400 to Rs 1200 as per the houseboat owners and tourists. If tourists refuse to pay they threaten them of dire consequences. When the reporter questions them about the government rate, they too thratned him saying go to police station.

Shikara riders is charging exorbitant fares to tourists, spark anger among tourists and houseboat owners. As per government rate system , the rate for the Shikara ride in Dal Lake/ Nigeen lake has been fixed at Rs 700 per hour for three kilometres with Rs 400 for every extra hour. For ferrying tourists from ghats to houseboats rate between 50-100 Rs has been fixed.
