Exploiting the late hours, they made off with the largest catch of freshwater fish from the government-established, community-run sanctuary.
Local residents near the sanctuary woke up to a disheartening sight of dozens of dead fish floating in the waters. Authorities were promptly alerted. Fisheries officer Kangku Oliver Sangma revealed that the thieves likely used poison, as many fish were found gasping for air and floating to the surface. A police FIR has been filed, and fish samples recovered from the water are undergoing post-mortem to identify the toxin used.
Authorities caution the public against consuming any fish that raises suspicions of poisoning. "We urge everyone not to consume any riverine fish sold in and around Williamnagar town as a safety measure," advised the fisheries officer.

The fish heist on December 12 resulted in the loss of approximately 150 to 200 kgs of matured fish from various species, dealing a significant blow to the sanctuary's ecosystem.
