Expresses ‘Shock’ Over Rs 6k-15k Pension Of Ex-HC Judges
The Supreme Court on Thursday expressed “shock” over some retired high court judges getting a meagre pension ranging between Rs 6,000 and Rs 15,000.
A bench of Justices B R Gavai, P K Mishra and K V Viswanathan was hearing a petition filed by a retired high court judge who said he was receiving a mere Rs 15,000 pension.
The petitioner, who was elevated as a judge of the Allahabad High Court after serving as a judicial officer in the district court for 13 years, claimed that the authorities had refused to consider his judicial service while computing the pension.
“If there are retired high court judges before us who are getting Rs 6,000 and Rs 15,000 as pension, it is shocking. How can that be?” the bench remarked.
Justice Gavai said the post-retirement facilities for judges differed in each high court and some states provided much better benefits.
The apex court thereafter posted the hearing on November 27.

Good News For As First Sighting Of Great Bittern Reported From J&K
Wildlife authorities on Thursday said the elusive Great Bittern (Botaurus stellaris) has been sighted for the first time in Kashmir at the renowned Wular lake in Bandipora district.
“This significant event not only highlights the ecological importance of the region but also strengthens the ongoing efforts to preserve its rich biodiversity,” an official said here.
As migratory birds return to their seasonal habitats, the Wular lake has once again proven to be a vital refuge for avian species.
The arrival of the Great Bittern, known for its distinctive booming call and cryptic plumage, marks an extraordinary occasion for ornithologists and nature lovers, the official said.
Its presence in the valley underscores the significance of wetland conservation in sustaining diverse bird populations, he added.
The bird was sighted by Showkat Ahmed, an official of the Wular Conservation and Management Authority (WUCMA) and an enthusiastic birdwatcher, on Sunday.

‘”We Are Not Among Those Who Cheat”: CM Amid Ruckus In J&K Assembly Over Art 370
Chief Minister of Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir, Omar Abdullah, reiterated on Thursday his call for raising a voice through the Legislative Assembly and sending a message that what happened on August 5, 2019, was not acceptable to them.
“I have been repeatedly saying to you that we have to raise our voice through the assembly and send a message through it, that what happened with us on August 5, 2019 that is not acceptable to us,” CM Omar told a gathering in Ganderabl after laying the foundation of a “crucial” bridge.
Omar Abdullah, who is a member of the Legislative Assembly from Ganderbal added, ” That was done without our permission, will and without consulting us. When it was not mentioned on the first day (Jammu and Kashmir Legislative assembly) some people started to taunt us. ‘They forget. Cheated’. We are not among those who cheat. The difference is that we are the people who know the rules and regulations.”
During his visit to the Ganderbal constituency, CM Omar Abdullah was accompanied by his deputy Surinder Kumar Choudhary and advisor to CM, Nasir Aslam Wani.
He added, “We know how to bring the matters through the assembly. We wanted such a voice to be raised via the assembly which can’t be even ignored by the BJP-led Centre. We could have introduced a resolution on the very first day which they would have thrown into a dustbin. Then, what would have benefitted us? (Agencies)

Cop, Two Wives With **in In Jammu
Police arrested a constable posted in the Crime Branch and his two wives during a raid on their house here on Thursday, and seized 33 grams of he**in and more than 2.5 lakh cash from their possession.
The raid, conducted at constable Parwaiz Khan’s residence in Janipur, also led to the recovery of 22 mobile phones, a weighing machine, and materials used for packaging the narcotic, known locally as ‘chitta’, a police spokesperson said.
Khan, along with his two wives Nargis Bhat and Parveen Akhtar, were allegedly preparing and selling small packets of he**in, targeting local youths, when they were held during the raid, the spokesperson said.
A case has been registered under various sections of the NDPS Act, and further investigation is underway.
Khan, who was posted in the Crime Branch, has been suspended following the arrest, the spokesperson said.
Janipur police are also investigating Khan’s finances, as he reportedly owns two houses in Janipur and has accumulated substantial properties.
Steps are being taken to seize any assets suspected to be proceeds from drug-related activities, police said.
Police emphasized their commitment to a “zero-tolerance” policy towards drug abuse and trafficking, noting that this arrest demonstrates their resolve to protect local youths from the dangers of narcotics.

Hold Against Passage Of Special Status Resolution In J&K Assembly
West Pakistan refugees on Thursday took out a protest march here against the government over the passage of a resolution in the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly on the restoration of the erstwhile state’s special status.
The protesters also demanded the implementation of Article 371 of the Indian Constitution in J&K.
They said that the ruling National Conference and valley-based parties are fooling the people of Kashmir with fake promises of restoring Article 370, which has been permanently abrogated after the Supreme Court of India upheld the Centre’s 2019 decision.
Led by the West Pakistani Refugees Association president, Labha Ram Gandhi, hundreds of refugees assembled in Jammu city from various areas of Jammu and Samba districts and held protests against the resolution.
Carrying national flags, they shouted slogans against the NC, its leaders, and Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Kumar Choudhary, stating that no power on the earth can restore Article 370 in Jammu and Kashmir.
“It is a drama by the NC and Kashmir-centric Muslim leadership in the valley. We condemn their actions to deceive the people of the valley with a fake promise to restore Article 370. They had promised people to bring back Article 370 during elections. Neither can it be brought back, nor can anybody bring it back,” Gandhi told reporters here.

will not be restored, J&K Assembly resolution attempt to divide India: BJP
The BJP on Thursday termed the passage of a resolution in the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly seeking restoration of special status as an “attempt to divide India” by the INDIA bloc parties and asserted that it will not let them succeed in their effort.
Coming down heavily on the ruling National Conference (NC) and its allies, senior BJP leader said passage of the resolution in the JK Assembly on Wednesday amounts to “disregard and insult” to the “decision” taken by Parliament and the Supreme Court on the scrapping of Article 370 of the Constitution.
“The resolution shows the tactical support of the leaders of the Congress and the INDI Alliance to extremism and terrorism,’ she told a press conference at the BJP headquarters here.
The BJP is up in arms against the Omar Abdullah government after the JK Assembly on Wednesday passed the resolution asking the Centre to hold dialogue with elected representatives for restoration of special status of the erstwhile state.
The Congress is not part of the JK government despite fighting the polls in alliance with the NC.

Hold Protest Against Special Status Resolution In Jammu, Burn Effigies Of Deputy CM
The Gorkha community in Jammu held a protest against the resolution seeking the restoration of Jammu and Kashmir’s special status passed in the assembly, and burnt effigies of Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Kumar Choudhary.
The protesters demanded a separate state for the Jammu region, saying it would allow them to have their own government that takes decisions benefitting them.
Led by Jammu and Kashmir Gorkha Sabha president, Karuna Chatri, hundreds of Gorkhas, including women and children, took out a protest rally against the National Conference government and the “Kashmir-centric leadership” over the passage of the resolution. The resolution passed on Wednesday sought to restore J-K’s special status that was earlier accorded to it in the now-revoked Article 370.
Raising slogans against Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, Deputy CM Choudhary and NC president Farooq Abdullah, the protestors said it could “deny them citizenship rights”.

J&K Assembly Adjourned For Day Amid Ruckus Over Resolution For Restoration Of Article 370
The Jammu and Kashmir Assembly was adjourned for the day on Thursday following a brawl between the BJP MLAs and marshals, as the opposition members protested against a resolution for the restoration of the erstwhile state’s special status for the second consecutive day.
While the opposition BJP said the resolution is “illegal” and demanded its withdrawal, the speaker said he does not have such powers as anything passed by the House can only be undone by the House itself.
Amid high drama, the day also witnessed a group of MLAs, including those from the PDP and Peoples’ Conference, submitting a fresh resolution demanding immediate restoration of Articles 370 and 35A of the Constitution in their original form.
As soon as the Assembly met in the morning, pandemonium broke out as the BJP members protested against the resolution that was passed on Wednesday.

Ruckus In J&K Assembly Over Special Status Resolution, BJP MLAs Marshalled Out
A brawl broke out between BJP MLAs and marshals of the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly on Thursday after the speaker directed eviction of opposition members who had stormed the well during their protest against the special status resolution.
At least three MLAs were marshalled out on the directions of Speaker Abdul Rahim Rather, but a brawl ensued due to resistance put up by the opposition members.
As soon as the assembly met this morning, ruckus prevailed as BJP members protested against the resolution that was passed on Wednesday.
While BJP MLA and Leader of Opposition Sunil Sharma was speaking over the resolution, Awami Ittehad Party leader and MLA Langate Sheikh Khursheed jumped into the well displaying a banner that read Articles 370 and 35A be restored.
This infuriated the BJP members, who also jumped into the well and snatched the banner, which they tore into pieces.
Amidst the din, the speaker adjourned the proceedings for 15 minutes.
