According to a study titled 'Northeast Paradise for Tourism,' the Government of India should consider increasing its budget for tourism promotion in the north- eastern region by Rs 10,000 crore and developing, in collaboration with respective State governments, two tourist centres in each State and equipping them with all required infrastructure.

According to Dr. DS Rawat, Chairman of the MSME Export Promotion Council, once two tourism centres in each state are constructed, 1.5 lakh new direct employment and an equivalent number of indirect jobs would be created, and the industry will be the greatest job creator.
"Tourism development would tackle the North-East's unemployment problem by creating massive direct and indirect jobs, consumer markets, encouraging start-ups, and money for the state," he added.

According to the Ministry of Finance, recent gold seizures in the North East by the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) show a surge in gold smuggling across the NE borders of Bangladesh and Myanmar. While the porous borders have previously been used for smuggling, 11 cases of gold seizures totaling 121 kg in September 2022 alone show that the NE corridor is still heavily used by smugglers employing ingenious methods of concealment.
The DRI recovered 65.46 kg of foreign-origin gold worth Rs 33.40 crore in three coordinated interceptions at Patna, Delhi, and Mumbai, acting on specific intelligence. The gold was sent via domestic courier from Aizwal to Mumbai. The DRI intercepted another large haul of illegal foreign origin gold weighing roughly 23.23 kg and valued at Rs.11.65 crore, which was being trafficked from Myanmar.
