V. O. Chidambaram Pillai, popularly known as VOC or Kappalottiya Tamizhan (the Tamil Helmsman), was an Indian freedom fighter and prominent leader from Tamil Nadu. He played a key role in India's independence movement, particularly in challenging British colonial control over the shipping industry.

Born on September 5, 1872, in Ottapidaram, Tamil Nadu, VOC was a lawyer by profession. However, his legacy is deeply connected with his fight against British dominance in trade. He founded the Swadeshi Steam Navigation Company in 1906 to challenge the British-controlled British India Steam Navigation Company. His initiative was a significant example of Indian self-reliance, as he successfully ran steamships between Tuticorin and Colombo.

VOC was also deeply influenced by the Swadeshi movement and was closely associated with Bal Gangadhar Tilak and other leaders. His efforts led to his imprisonment by the British for sedition in 1908, where he underwent severe hardships and was sentenced to rigorous imprisonment. He was made to work in prison doing hard labor, including oil extraction, which earned him immense respect from the Indian populace.
After his release from prison, VOC faced financial difficulties but continued to support nationalist causes and spread awareness of the freedom movement. He passed away on November 18, 1936.

VOC's contributions to India's struggle for independence, especially his efforts to promote indigenous enterprise, remain celebrated, particularly in Tamil Nadu.
