Our Plymouth team had a fantastic time this week volunteering at their local YMCA as part of WWA March Volunteering Month! 🙌

Keen to dedicate their volunteering day to YMCA Plymouth’s campaign, our team headed down to their site in Honicknowle to assist with the much-needed renovations to the 1970s building 🖌️

The YMCA in Plymouth is Plymouth’s oldest charity established in 1884. Since then the team across all their sites have been dedicated to supporting the local community with health and wellbeing services, cardiac rehabilitation, educational support, disability sports and crisis help for those who need it most. The charity serves over 30,000 people each year and is a cornerstone of the Plymouth Community.

Our team took part in painting one of the classrooms on site which is utilised by Discovery College enabling students to belong, contribute & thrive through accredited vocational training. Whilst waiting for the paint to dry in the classroom the next challenge was touching up one of the areas in the hallway before heading back upstairs to the classroom for a second coat!

Working quickly together as a team the classroom was finished by lunchtime so an afternoon in the sun was enjoyed by all whilst refreshing the paintwork on the Five-a-Side pitch.

A massive thank you to Sarah Newberry, Fundraising And Corporate Sales Lead at YMCA Plymouth, for making us feel so welcome and directing us on how we could help.

We would also like to thank Keith Elliott Construction Ltd and R&N DECORATORS LTD for assisting us and lending us your paint scrapers!

And final a thank you to our volunteer team Sarah Prosser, Dylan Gilbery, Simon Wheeler MRICS and Charlotte Allkins!

Continuing with our Ward Williams Associates March Volunteering Month our Exeter Office has been put to work by Ranger Harry of the National Trust at Ashclyst Forest near Killerton 🌲

Ashclyst Forest is one of the largest woods in East Devon and a haven for butterflies, bluebells and birds. As part of the 'Ancient Woodlands and Trees' programme, The Woodland Trust and the National Trust are working in partnership to restore and manage ancient trees and woodlands across the Killerton estate, including thinning and removal of invasive and non-native species to increase light levels and support the natural regeneration of these precious habitats.

With the help of Ranger Harry, our group of volunteers were tasked with removing the plastic support shrouds from woodland to allow the trees to continue to grow and woodland to thrive.

Despite the volunteer coordinator predicting this would take a full day our ever-enthusiastic team were finished by 10:30 am! Whilst Ranger Harry searched for some more work for the guys, the team took a quick coffee break before they were back at it after a move to the adjacent woodland where they continued removing the plastic shrouds.

After completing yet another task Ranger Harry challenged the team with the clearing of Holly and Rhododendron from the area. Whilst from the outside this may have looked like the felling of a large number of trees, with the careful guidance of Ranger Harry the team ensured only invasive species were felled and thankfully none of the team managed to injure themselves!

To find out more about the Killerton Estate and how you can help support the Ashclyst Forest follow the link: https://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/ashclyst-forest

Our Team has been working hard taking part in this year's Ward Williams Associates March Volunteering Month! 🙌

The team headed down to Priors Park Edible Garden and Allotment site last Thursday partnering with Vision 21 Gloucestershire.

Vision 21 is a charity that does a wide range of activities to support the local communities around Gloucester. They have recently been involved in setting up a Reclaim Furniture Scheme for those who can’t afford new furniture, as well as maintaining allotment sites for locals who struggle with the day-to-day nurturing of the plants.

The Gloucester team started work on the Tewkesbury based site, under the direction of the allotment committee member, Dave Cooper. Dave provided the team with an overview of the local community, as well as informed the team how private plot members help with the community patch. Private plot owners may have a surplus of vegetables, and therefore donate them to the community gardens as well as some to a local nursing home.

The team worked hard turning up beds, tidying up the site, litter picking, and removing and installing alternate water butts. They also helped with de-weeding the plant beds and flattening out the ground to create space for water butts to prevent flooding.

Their work attracted the attention of several local residents and private plot owners who took an interest in why they were out volunteering and provided a few recommendations on how to grow their own veg, as well as expressing their gratitude.

The team would like to thank Vision 21 Gloucestershire for providing WWA with this incredible volunteering opportunity and would love to help with this project again in the future!

To kick off Ward Williams Associates March Volunteering Month Lauren Stewart and Rebecca Hodgson from our Manchester Office have been out volunteering with Mustard Tree! 🙌

Lauren explained more about Mustard Tree and the incredible work they do for the local community:

"Mustard Tree is a charity that supports those who are rough sleeping or who have faced other barriers in their life such as lack of confidence or skills. However, it is not a place that just provides food and sends people on their way. Mustard Tree gives these people the opportunity to gain skills that they can use to excel.

For example, Mustard Tree has a “Freedom Project” scheme that allows volunteers to gain work experience, learn skills, overcome barriers, and find work. They also have a “Food Club” where people on low/no incomes can purchase 10 items of food for £2.50.

We learned about the backgrounds of those who are now paid employees at Mustard Tree, and their stories of success are heart-warming and inspirational.

In some cases, individuals come to this charity for help with alcoholism or drug problems, they might be homeless or recently come out of prison and they receive all the support that Mustard Tree can provide and if it cannot be provided by them, individuals will be signposted elsewhere. Some people that we spoke to have really changed their lives around, and that success is immeasurable.

On the day, we helped to deliver and pick up furniture with Haydn our driver. We have also offered to support any fundraising opportunities that they have in the future.

We cannot thank Mustard Tree enough for the amazing support they are giving to those who feel like they have nowhere to turn."

To find out more about Mustard Tree and how you can offer support please follow the link: https://mustardtree.org.uk/
