Road safety charity Brake has revealed the shortlist for the UK Fleet Champions Awards 2024, which recognise the hard work and dedication of the fleet sector to prevent crashes and reduce pollution.

A total of 43 organisations and individuals are competing for 12 categories. The shortlisted entries are now being assessed by a panel of external judges.

The UK new light commercial vehicle market fell 4.5% in June, bringing a record-equalling 17-month growth run to an end.

A total of 33,066 new vans and light commercials were registered last month, down from 34,360 units in June 2023, according to the latest figures from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT).

UK commercial vehicle manufacturing fell 59.3% in May, as temporary supply chain challenges impacted output, the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) has revealed.

A total of 4,400 vans, trucks, taxis, buses and coaches rolled out of factory gates last month, compared to a particularly buoyant figure of 10,817 in May 2023.

Just 2% of combustion vans scrapped under the London ULEZ scrappage scheme have been switched to electric vehicles so far, despite millions of pounds of funding being put aside.

Transport for London (TfL) data reveals that of the 16,579 approved applications to scrap a petrol or diesel van between January 2023 to May 2024, only 372 were replaced with an electric vehicle.

UK startup Watt Electric Vehicle Company (WEVC) has revealed a production-ready of its upcoming eCV1 electric van, complete with a new wide body.

The Cornwall-based business, which also develops EVs for third parties, initially revealed the van in prototype form at the 2023 CV Show. The latest version incorporates feedback from fleets and the firm is planning to start volume production from 2026.

The incoming government should re-evaluate the zero emissions vehicle (ZEV) mandate for vans to reflect wide-ranging issues faced by fleets.

Peter Golding, managing director at the fleet software specialist, said the gap between the capabilities of the vehicles on offer and the needs of many fleets was proving too wide – and there were no easy ways of bridging that divide.
